Deafdonkey · 16/06/2019 21:55

You lovely mumsnetters have helped me in the past so asking for your knowledge and experience.
My year 6 has asked what 69 is. They know its something to do with sex. Can anyone help me to age appropriately explain it.

Thanks

Does he/she know what sex is? (how babies happen?)

MamaOfBothTeams · 16/06/2019 21:58

Where has your 6 year old heard about a 69 enough to know it's sexual?

Vulpine · 16/06/2019 21:59

I would say it's a sex position that looks like the number 69 but would want to know where they heard it

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 16/06/2019 22:00

Not a 6 year old, year 6! Hmm She actually says that in the OP so don’t change it to suit your horror.

Vulpine · 16/06/2019 22:00

Year 6 is 10/11 year old

JamandToast71 · 16/06/2019 22:01

I worked with year 6 for years. And believe me they knew more about things than I was willing to admit. Most will just think it's hilarious. I would refer them back to their parents or guardians to explain. (The easy way out) with no safeguarding issues to contend with.

Deafdonkey · 16/06/2019 22:01

Doing sex education at school. Have been told that a penis enters a vagina and that can make a baby. Children talking in playground about 69. Almost certain these children don't know what it means, but have older siblings.

"It's something that only adults do and need to know about" there you go OP. Not hard, ehy!

justbeniceplease · 16/06/2019 22:04

I'm a bit confused as to why you would ask this. Nobody needs to discuss this with a 6 year old and the natural reaction would be to brush it off and move on.

Why do you think your should tell a 6 year old about graphic oral sex?

MamaOfBothTeams · 16/06/2019 22:04

Sorry missed the year bit Blush

Deafdonkey · 16/06/2019 22:04

Thanks, sorry for those that thought six. No year 6 so eleven. I'm forever shocked what year 6 know and it's not my first child to go through y6 just the first to ask about 69.

OP posts:
justbeniceplease · 16/06/2019 22:05

Omg sorry OP I thought 6 as well.

I'm on Scotland though so can't read year 6 to men's much else than 6. I often ask why people don't just say 'my 11 year old' because it makes it so much easier. Even for people who know the year groups there are age variations anyway.

HomeMadeMadness · 16/06/2019 22:05

I'm very liberal and open with my DC but I really don't think you need to elaborate in any detail at all with a 6 year old on this one. I would just tell him that the other kids are being silly and talking about things they don't understand. That's something that only adults understand/talk about/do.

HomeMadeMadness · 16/06/2019 22:07

Oh sorry Y6 not 6 year old! I still probably wouldn't want to explain that in too much detail. I'd just say it's something adult couples might do together.

Deafdonkey · 16/06/2019 22:07

@Broombroomshaketheroom hmmm I want to foster an open relationship, if you can't ask your parents I'm not sure where you will find your information. If I just said it's for adults it wouldn't stop curiosity, I've always explained things age related not with a blanket answer. This is just more tricky

OP posts:
Broombroomshaketheroom · 16/06/2019 22:10

Err nah, OP. A 10yr old doesn't need to know what sexual positions are.

Deafdonkey · 16/06/2019 22:10

@justbeniceplease sorry, I put year six as there seems such a difference between year 5 and six, sorry didn't think about Scotland although have family there so know it is different. It's such an awkward ages where they are told stuff in the playground and hear some truths in the classroom.

OP posts:
FusionChefGeoff · 16/06/2019 22:11

I'd just say that's there's lots of different ways that you can have sex - and that it's the name of one of the positions. Do you think that's enough??

Jamhandprints · 16/06/2019 22:13

I don't know, maybe say sex can be done in different positions, like standing up or lying down and some people give names to the positions. And "69" is one of them. Is this your child or a child you work with?

81Byerley · 16/06/2019 22:14

I'm afraid I might say I don't know....

Deafdonkey · 16/06/2019 22:19

@FusionChefGeoff @Jamhandprints thank you both reading your replies helps to make it all clearer. They have had truth and false quiz where they had to guess if T or F. So fe, Can you get pregnant first time you have sex, or can you get pregnant if you have sex standing up. Might be enough to say this is just another way you can have sex.

OP posts:
BadnessInTheFolds · 16/06/2019 22:20

"it's a sexual position where each person is kissing the other person's private parts, so it looks like a 69 because their heads are at opposite ends"

Depending if they ask questions and what they ask, I might elaborate something like, "you can't get pregnant from 69 but adults also have sex because they enjoy it. Some people enjoy 69, some don't. As with anything sexual you should only do something if you want to and you know your partner does too. If you change your mind you should tell your partner so they know (and of course if they tell you they've changed their mind you should listen). It's not something you need to think about until you're older"

I agree with OP actually. If you brush them off with "oh it's just something adults do" they will realise you won't give them answers and stop coming to you with questions. It seems likely they know it's a sexual act already, they want a little more information

LillithsFamiliar · 16/06/2019 22:20

If they asked on Fri because it had been mentioned in school, I'd assume they'll have forgotten about it by now.
I'm not sure there is an age-appropriate description but then again I also don't think this is a good topic for AIBU. Maybe ask for it to be moved somewhere more appropriate OP. There are a lot of unsavoury lurkers about here atm.
