To ask which family car you own?

Posting here for traffic.....

My other thread gained 0 posts so I thought I would rephrase on here.

Money is tight so I need to make sure that I am making the right decision. I am wanting to buy a 3 year old Nissan Qashqai. It is a small engine 1.2 but I am told it has plenty of power for motorway driving.

Can I ask which car you would recommend for a family car which is reliable, spacious and cheap to run.

I love my Peugeot 308 estate. (2..0L diesel)

fiorentina · 16/06/2019 21:53

We recently had a Qashqai as a hire car and I loved it. Boot was ok, not huge but fine, and it drove really nicely. I usually drive a bigger 4x4, but many friends are happy with their Qashqais.

Yellowpolkadot · 16/06/2019 21:55

Ford Focus 🤷🏻‍♀️ Fits us all in!

alislim · 16/06/2019 21:56

Hi,
A while back I had a car hire after being in a collision. Earlier this year in fact. Brand new qashqi, nice interior, nice ride. But had no punch on the motorway whatsoever. Couldn't figure out why until I realised it was a 1.2 (I had assumed it would be a bigger engine). No big deal as it was only a hire car but would definitely swerve the engine size if I came to buy.
We normally have a Peugeot 3008. Shite car. Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. Angryx

stucknoue · 16/06/2019 21:58

I have loved my Mazdas

topcat2014 · 16/06/2019 22:00

Dacia Logan (estate version of Sandero).

55k trouble free miles so far, and it's mahoosive boot.

Stravapalava · 16/06/2019 22:02

I'd want a bigger engine in a car the size of a Qashqai to be honest.

I have a Kia Sportage 1.7 and love it.

DriveAway · 16/06/2019 22:03

Alislim, was the qashqai a newer model? Nissan told me the 2016 1.2 turbo petrol is supposed to be fine on the motorway? I am worried now.

Depends how big your family is?

FrothyB · 16/06/2019 22:09

Skoda Octavia Scout. One of the biggest boots in its class, runs nicely, 2.0l diesel if I remember right. I get on average 480ish miles to a full tank. You'd get a bit better economy out of a regular Octavia Estate, I simply got the Scout for the 4x4 set up, slightly raised body, underside protection etc as I have to use alot of B roads to get to work that can get a bit rough in the winter.

I've taken it to Hungary and it was comfortable for the 12 solid hours I drove, and I'm 6'9 so I need a fair amount of space.

It had a battery issue which they replaced under warranty at its last service, and that's it in terms of problems.

Fairylea · 16/06/2019 22:11

We have a Kia Venga 1.6 and we absolutely love it. It’s much bigger inside than it looks and the boot is huge. It’s the best car we’ve ever had.

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 16/06/2019 22:11

Of course Nissan told you that 😂

1.2 really. Really? Just no.

More power in a moped 😂

Girlicorne · 16/06/2019 22:13

we have a 1.6 Peugeot 308 diesel it's super powerful, I get 600 miles on a full tank (£60, it did more when it was younger but now has 168k on the clock) and the boot is huge! I would love a qashqai but the 1.6 ones are pricy and as a pp said I wouldn't want to drive such a big car with such a small engine.

justbeniceplease · 16/06/2019 22:14

The 1.2 petrol is actually a decent motorZ. No reason for it to cause any problems on a motorway

And absolutely not less powerful than a moped Confused

PinkiOcelot · 16/06/2019 22:14

Peugeot 2008. Hate it. Just horrible car to drive. Can’t wait to change it.

My friend and her husband both have and are happy with them

Seeline · 16/06/2019 22:14

I've got a 1.2 2014 qashqai and hate it. No power anywhere - pulling away, on hills, nor motorway. Very small boot, lacks space in the rear, poor visibility with many blind spots. Even the auto wipers annoy me! The only thing I do like are the rear parking cameras.

Linguaphile · 16/06/2019 22:15

How many kids and what ages?

The Smax is brilliant for our family of 5. It fits all the carseats in 3 full size seats with 3 isofix points across the middle row, and we still have an enormous boot with 2 flip-up seats we can use for when grandparents fly in.

Depends what your main criteria are though!

GiggleMcDimples · 16/06/2019 22:15

Vauxhall Vectra. I love it!!

wellhonestly · 16/06/2019 22:17

VW Golf 1.4. Ancient now but has lasted well.

Doesn't have a huge amount of vim when fully laden, but nippy enough with 1 or 2. I never (well hardly ever) go above the speed limit though, so haven't really thrashed it ever.

Matilda15 · 16/06/2019 22:17

I think a Qashqai is a great car, however not in a 1.2. You need a minimum of the 1.5 and even thats slow.

I know someone who returned a 1.2 Qashqai after purchase due to it being so unresponsive. The person worked in Milton Keynes and it just wouldn’t go at the roundabout.

I have a VW Tiguan which I absolutely love and would definitely recommend

itsgoodtobehome · 16/06/2019 22:18

Skoda Yeti - and it’s my favourite car I’ve ever had - and I had some seriously sporty numbers before kids!!

DriveAway · 16/06/2019 22:19

Family of 5, 3 children.

I like the look of the qashqai, the boot space isn’t massive but it is ok for us. The interior is nice and middle seat is bigger than most I have seen, though still not what I would call a full seat.

Feel a bit silly about believing nissan about 1.2 now Blush

Is it defo a bad idea to go for a 1.2 turbo petrol for motorway mileage?

OP posts:
DriveAway · 16/06/2019 22:23

I was under the impression that new technology in the 2016 model had made 1.2 more powerful than a conventional 1.2 engine, i think i was told it has 120bhp. Not sure what any of it means. Blush

13 reg Qashqai+2 Tekna 1.5dCi
1st ever brand new car, well it was pre registered by dealer. We had it a week before 63 came out.
Best car we have had. 80000 miles on 2 set of tyres. Brilliant boot, only one breakdown, split air intake pipe.
Worst thing Nissan did was to stop the +2.
If we replace it we will look at either Skoda Karoq or mondeo estate.

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 16/06/2019 22:24

They are cheap because they are shite. The money you save on screen price will soon be spent on extra fuel.

If you're on that much of a budget you'd be better off with a Dacia which although also crap, get consistently good reviews. Or my personal favourite, a 10 year old Volvo V70 2.4d which is the best car ever made. Pick one up for £1k and job done!
