To ask which family car you own?

Posting here for traffic.....

My other thread gained 0 posts so I thought I would rephrase on here.

Money is tight so I need to make sure that I am making the right decision. I am wanting to buy a 3 year old Nissan Qashqai. It is a small engine 1.2 but I am told it has plenty of power for motorway driving.

Can I ask which car you would recommend for a family car which is reliable, spacious and cheap to run.

Ford kuga 2l titanium x 😌

IWouldPreferNotTo · 17/06/2019 09:41

Citroen C-Crosser which is a rebadged and different engine Mitsubishi Outlander.

It's pretty good with with a decent amount of boot space and very comfy.

However, if I was going to replace it I'd look at a Skoda Superb estate or a Mercedes E-Class estate.

Lost5stone · 17/06/2019 09:48

I don't know much about cars but I would be wary of a 1.2 the size of a Qashqai.

We have a 3008 and I get on with it fine, my other car is a C1 though so I guess anything feels better! still waiting on the C1 to die though

nodtik · 17/06/2019 09:52

Volvo either XC60
Or XC90

Safest cars on the road, great fuel efficiency and fab to drive. Especially the newer ones!

Would never go to another manufacturer now!

QuestionableMouse · 17/06/2019 10:08

Zafira Tourer. It's big so lots of space. I managed to get 7 plus a buggy and wheelchair in it recently.

Fairly cheap to run- costs me £20 a week for fuel, £17 a month for tax and when I fill the tank it has a range of 600 ish miles. Its the 1.8 petrol and has no problems even full on the motorway.

The seats fold flat which basically turns it into a van.

It is quite plasticy and doesn't quite have three proper seats in the middle row (the middle one is a bit more narrow).

I like it though and do lots of miles in it. I'm also only short and find the raised seating position comfortable.

I have a 2ltr diesel 2010 ford kuga, good sized boot, we love it

HotChocolateLover · 17/06/2019 10:34

10 year old 1.6 litre Qashqai. Love it.

ELM8 · 17/06/2019 10:43

I've got a 2017 1.2 turbo qashqai and it's plenty powerful enough.. I commute on the motorway and have never had an issue. I was sceptical as our old car was 1.6 but I can't complain at all.

Only difference is I use first gear much more to give it a boost whereas I was very lazy with my last car and just pulled off in second most of the time.. it doesn't like that at all! You get used to it though. Great car.

Pinkmouse6 · 17/06/2019 10:45

We have four DC and have the qashqai +2. We originally had a Volvo XC90 but it guzzled up diesel like you cannot imagine and cost a fortune to insure. Qashqai is far more economical, it’s a great car.

How many people? we have a toyota yaris that is perfect for 2 adults, 2 kids. fits a weeks worth of luggage plus christmas presents ;)

Bloomburger · 17/06/2019 10:48

I wouldn't think a 1.2 engine would be near powerful enough.

norrismcwhirtersfridgemagnet · 17/06/2019 10:56

Tiguan Match 1.5 petrol- plenty of power and lovely to drive plus has chargers and tables in the back for kids.

Lifecraft · 17/06/2019 10:57

Of course Nissan told you that. 1.2 really. Really? Just no. More power in a moped

2005 wants their post back!!! Grin

What utter cobblers. A moped puts out about 12bhp, a 1.2 Qashqai about 125bhp, so 10 times as powerful.

The latest low cc petrol engines are fab. They now do a 1.0 Mondeo, whereas 10 years ago they were 1.8 or 2.0 and made less power than they do now.

PlausibleSuit · 17/06/2019 10:58

Regarding the 1.2 engine... modern turbocharged small capacity petrol engines are pretty good, by and large. The 1.2 is a Renault engine and it's (roughly) equivalent in power and performance to the 1.6 that was in the previous generation Qashqai.

That said, they can get gutless on motorways if the car's full of folk and stuff, and the economy can suffer. Especially on hills, or if you have to drop speed. So you might want to test-drive one to make sure you like how it drives. If you do a lot of long motorway drives with a car-full of people and luggage, you might consider a different engine.

I'd go for a Mazda CX-5 or a Kia Sportage over a Qashqai but that's me, and it's not because the QQ is a bad car; I just prefer the others.

Lifeover · 17/06/2019 11:01

Really you need to get as small and as environmentally friendly car as you can.

Lifeover · 17/06/2019 11:02

Please don’t buy a gas guzzling Chelsea tractor

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 17/06/2019 11:06

lifeover what would you recommend? Flowers in advance

PeachandBee · 17/06/2019 11:09

We have a Astra estate 2.0 and a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6. 2 adults and 3 kids all still in child seats. We only bought the Citroen because we cant fit 3 car seats in the astra, and it isn't the sexiest of cars but the space and gadgets were great value for money! Trade in on the astra was atrocious so weve kept it for DH work car until the warranty runs out next year.

Would never buy anything under a 1.4 (unless electric, geez those things are nippy!) as an automatic driver with a car full in a city well known for its roundabouts every 3 seconds it just wouldn't work!

glasshouse · 17/06/2019 11:11

Skoda Roomster for me, really comfortable, loads of leg room in the back and is like a tardis for storage. Ugly looking from the outside but you don't need to spend all your time looking at it.

RottnestFerry · 17/06/2019 11:16

We find ours excellent. Roomy and versatile. Not too bad on fuel either. 25 mpg on a good day.

PlausibleSuit · 17/06/2019 11:18

I think it's all getting a bit finger-in-the-air and it's hard to make recommendations without knowing some usage details. So:

  • How many miles a year do you do?
  • What kind of driving? (i.e. motorways, country lanes, city)
  • Do you need to factor in the ULEZ?
  • What's your budget? (roughly)
  • How do you treat your cars? (i.e. serviced on the button and polished every Sunday or battered into submission by kids and circumstance)
familycourtq · 17/06/2019 11:19

1.2 Turbo will be fine in a Qashqai - ignore all the people with zero actual knowledge.

Rhinosaur · 17/06/2019 11:19

We have a 1.2tci (I think) Renault Kadjar - think it will be the same engine and we have no issues with the power. Fine for motorway driving.
Ours has an eco mode that we usually keep it in - if we want a bit more power accelerating we switch it off (but it’s very rare)

chuttypicks · 17/06/2019 11:25

Do you need to use car seats in it, as apparently the Qashqais done have much back seat space for car seats...

Purpletigers · 17/06/2019 11:27

I drive a verso . Avoid anything French . If money is an issue then buy to last so go for Toyota or Mazda . Renault in particular are notoriously dreadful .
