To have booked a holiday to Cancun for August

I have checked the forecast and it looks dire. Lots of rain, thunderstorms etc. Gutted. Can't get a refund. Has anyone been in August and of so, what was the weather like?

It’s ok; the temp is still going to be 25/35 C and it isn’t as wet in August as September or October, just wetter than December- April.

juneau · 15/06/2019 12:35

If it's like Florida in August then it will probably chuck it down for an hour every afternoon and then the sun will come out again. I haven't been to either, but if its booked and paid for then just hope for the best. It's still two months away, so you can't yet know what the forecast is for the time you'll be there.

sluj · 15/06/2019 12:39

Stop panicking, it will probably be odd isolated thunderstorms after lunch for an hour. Just go and get a cocktail. It will still be boiling before and after but gives you a chance to get out of the sun for a while. I've been in August three times and only had one day of proper storms most of the day and no rain at all most days. I don't think it will bother you, go and have fun.

sluj · 15/06/2019 12:39

Also dont forget the forecast will show thunderstorms even if it's just for 5 minutes.

Beheuehyu · 15/06/2019 12:40

Not been in August but have been quite a few times. The rain really isn’t like here - chucks it down for a few minutes so you either grab a drink or jump in the pool. Then the sun reappears

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 15/06/2019 12:46

I went in August and we had one day of torrential rain in 10 days we were there. However it was still hot. We laid out on our balcony in bikinis and shorts whilst it was hammering t down!

Don't jump in the pool if there's a thunderstorm though! Confused

Mummyshark2019 · 15/06/2019 13:06

Thanks all. You've really helped put my mind at ease. I know we just need to go and make the most of it, but knowing that the rain will be short sharp blasts is good.

I'm going in July. I'm planning to take lightweight pac a mac things as we've got a couple of excursions planned so might end up being outside even if it's raining. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Mummyshark2019 · 15/06/2019 13:19

Great idea re PAC a mac

Went a few years ago to Mayan Riviera in August. The thunderstorms were fantastic. But we spent a lot of time on beach etc between the storms. Some days were completely dry.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 15/06/2019 13:21

We came back from Cancun at the beginning of August a couple of years back. Weather was fine, hot and beautiful. Couple of tropical showers that lasted 10 minutes....they literally go as quick as they arrive

MotherOfDragons90 · 15/06/2019 15:32

Went in April and the weather forecast looked DIRE. Like rain and thunderstorms daily.

In reality it rained maybe every couple of days for maybe an hour max and was mostly glorious sunshine.

I think the iPhone weather app shows the whole day as rain if there is actually a 40% chance of rain at 3pm or whatever.

Take a pack of cards and if it rains just ride it out in the bar with a couple of beers, rest assured you’ll be back sunbathing in no time! The thunderstorms are fab too watch. Enjoy!

DonkeyHohtay · 15/06/2019 15:39

Would be more concerned about it being slap bang in the middle of hurricane season, tbh.

Can't believe you asked for a refund because you hadn't thought to check the weather!! Yes, you will probably be OK with no hurricanes and the odd sharp thunderstorm. But there's a reason why the peak time in Cancun is the winter months.

WhiteRedRose · 15/06/2019 15:43

My friend is there at the moment. It looks stunning. But it is not a summer destination.

Mummyshark2019 · 15/06/2019 15:44

Yep, my bad Donkey, I was impetuous in booking. But glad to hear the positive stories from people who have been, so thank you all. Expedia said that I could get a refund on the hotel but not the flights. So I would only be getting back approx half of the cost. So deffo will go and hope for the best, and make the most of what the weather brings! 😆

Not sure if you’re interested in this sort of thing but that’s the best time to see whale sharks!! (Gentle, no teeth not really like a shark sort of thing)

It’s right at the top of my list ☺️

Verite1 · 15/06/2019 16:34

I went in August years ago. I don’t remember the rain, but I do remember the unbelievable heat. I couldn’t sit out until after 4 most days!

LadyRannaldini · 15/06/2019 19:25

It's worth checking the weather before you book for future reference! Anywhere in that region is prone to violent storms during late Summer, sorry.

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 15/06/2019 19:30

We got back a couple weeks ago. Was 35 most days, and we had 4 out of our 12 days absolutely hammering down. We were in the pool playing volleyball with it raining so hard you'd duck your head underwater to dry out for a sec 😂
But then a couple hours later (which does feel like allllll day), the sun comes back out and you carry on.

If you wanted uninterrupted sun you'd have booked Dubai Hmm

QueenArnica · 15/06/2019 19:32

I was there for a month in August, yes there were rainy days and some thunderstorms but never for long and passed quickly.
Beautiful people and beautiful place (I was in Riviera Maya). Have a great time!

Mummyshark2019 · 15/06/2019 19:37

Oh wow a month! Lucky you Queen! Hope the rain and storms pass quickly whilst we are there Grin.

We've been in August into September and had amazing weather. We had one shower on the ferry back from Isla one day, that was it and a fantastic thunder and lightning storm one night - no rain. Just remember that weather sites may show rain even if it's a spit.

And yes it's whale shark season, we've been lucky enough to swim with them as well as the manta rays that showed up. Got amazing videos and pics.

SlackerMum1 · 15/06/2019 20:15

Don’t worry it’s unlikely to be a problem. I grew up in the area and as folks say even in rainy season you can almost time your watch by the down pour - pretty much 2 pm every afternoon for 1-2 hours max. And that’s at the height of rainy season. It’ll still be warm. Plus the rains can be pretty spectacular themselves...
