To have booked a holiday to Cancun for August

I have checked the forecast and it looks dire. Lots of rain, thunderstorms etc. Gutted. Can't get a refund. Has anyone been in August and of so, what was the weather like?

The whale sharks are amazing. Definitely do that! And most stop @ Isla Mujeres for lunch on the way back.

Mummyshark2019 · 15/06/2019 20:40

How exciting Fraction! Whale sharks and manta rays sound so good. Fingers crossed I get similar weather you you on your trip.

Slackermum, that's so interesting! Thanks for the insight. So cool that you used to live there.

I'm interested in the whale sharks but get terribly sea sick....do you spend a long time in the boat before getting to them where you can snorkel? I know it'll be slightly different every day but wasn't sure if they hung around in a particular area? I'm staying at playa del Carmen/Rivera maya rather than cancun if anyone has any good trips/must dos.

cantbeb0thered · 15/06/2019 21:00

It is at least an hour, maybe more to get to them and the journey is fine. Once the boat stops then it can get a little dodgy. I did vomit over the side once. Felt much better afterwards. Don't feel embarrassed to puke 🤮

AnthonyCrowley · 15/06/2019 21:08

Sadly I think I will give it a miss. I spent the worst two hours of my life on a whale watching boat trip off Tenerife a couple of years ago. We must have been a mile off shore and I was genuinely contemplating swimming for it! I wanted to die!

usernamerisnotavailable · 15/06/2019 21:22

I genuinely don't understand how/why people don't research weather before booking a holiday. Anywhere around the Caribbean / americas is hot sticky humid and storm season from July to September. Why oh why wouldn't you go to Europe then and the Caribbean in their season (October to May). I've had friends huddled in a hotel In Antigua for a week during a hideous storm in July. They were genuinely baffled. No one else was!

cantbeb0thered · 15/06/2019 21:42

@AnthonyCrowley

With this trip, you can sort of do that. The idea is that when you stop the boat, you get in the water and swim with the whale sharks. If you can stomach it, I would recommend

RubyViolet · 15/06/2019 21:45

It’s hurricane season, that’s why it’s hot and rainy. Get travel insurance, check the weather apps before and whilst you are there. I have been in a hurricane it’s not something l would wish to repeat.

It can be an hour or more on the boat just to get to the sharks. I have horrendous motion sickness but I took travel sickness tablets and was okay. However the guide on our trip was sick! Lunch was in the sea on floating surfboards off Mujeres.

We went to Isla Mujeres for a full day. Hopped on the ferry (we stayed close to it) , booked a golf cart (on the ferry) and spent the day driving around it was fabulous. We stopped at the Zoëtry Villa Rolandi for lunch, it was a gorgeous hotel. It was a brilliant day.

It doesn't always work that way, weather can never be guaranteed 100% anywhere. My husband was in NZ a couple of years ago, their summer and his weather was shit.

modgepodge · 16/06/2019 19:28

We went in August a few years back. It rained for a few minutes on a few days. The fact it was SO hot and humid was actually more of a problem - hubby burned in the shade with cream on!! Soooo sweaty. We didn't experience thunderstorms or hurricanes...seem to remember the travel agent saying August wasn’t quite hurricane season (it’s right at the end or start or something I think).

AnthonyCrowley · 16/06/2019 19:36

I spoke to a friend today who went last August. She said it rained ten mins a day and was soooo hot. Ive only bought spf 30 and think I'm going to get some spf 50 suncream now.

Saying that forecast is 28-30 and ive been to Egypt when it was 40 all week so it can't be that bad!

Mummyshark2019 · 16/06/2019 20:09

Oh I so hope we are lucky and it only rains for ten mins a day. That would be awesome. I don't mind the hot weather. But yes, Anthony, the higher the SPF the better. I am taking factor 50. Take sun hats too. Have a fab trip. Report back here if you can. Would love to hear about your trip.

Have a look at this site for historical weather in Cancun in August - August 2018. You can change dates.

AnthonyCrowley · 16/06/2019 20:20

Yes, will let you know how it went.

Mummyshark2019 · 17/06/2019 02:06

Thanks Fraxion

It's incredibly hot and humid. We also got caught in a category 5 hurricane (we had travelled south down the Yucatán Peninsula from Cancun, but from memory still approx 60 mins from Cancun).

I would never go back to somewhere in hurricane season.

Pinkmouse6 · 17/06/2019 11:58

I went once in August and the weather was glorious. I think one or two days out of the two weeks were rainy. Great holiday.

Mummyshark2019 · 17/06/2019 16:38

Brilliant Pinkmouse. Fingers crossed!!

We went about 20 mins further south 2 years ago for my DSD's wedding. She put it back 2 weeks to accommodate a friend and that last few days was monsoon WET. However, most of that area tends to be short sharp bursts of rain then sunshine 20 mins later, so I think we were unlucky.

Highly recommend Xel-Ha and the cenotes, and do make time to go to the ruins down near Tulum - fascinating.

Poloshot · 17/06/2019 16:58

You've booked during the rainy/hurricane season what do you expect? It'll be fine, short sharp torrential downpours but it'll be red hot.

Mummyshark2019 · 17/06/2019 19:36

Thanks Wink. Will definitely go to see the ruins.
