To wonder why people have children when they clearly put their career first, by having a 24hr maternity nurse from day one and a full-time nanny from 3 months?

Call me old fashioned but why bother when you are going to see your child for maybe an hour a day on weekdays?
It's not financially needed for mum to return to work (far from) so why leave your teeny weeny baby with a nanny during the most amazing time of their lifes?

A bit strange I fear!

Don't watch Grey's anatomy. Spend too much time working to have time for telly. (or course MN seems to always make it into the schedule)

edam · 26/07/2007 17:33

Oh, the old 'why bother having children if you are only going to go back to work' rubbish. Sigh... Actually in cultural/historical/demographic terms the SAHM is a relatively recent and largely middle class phenomenon. The upper classes have always had servants and the working classes have always worked - mothers used to do piece work for factories or take in laundry, for instance. Peter and Jane with mum at home doing the washing up are not typical representations of humanity.

Anyone who has a sufficient family income to be a SAHM and is happy and fulfilled doing that is very lucky. Good for them. I have to assume ones who attack other women for doing things differently are somehow insecure about their own choices.

"ooh I fancy something with champagne in" And who's looking after the children tonight, then? Is that the responsible thing to do? At least one parent should stay sober in case the LOs need emergency care. Oh, sorry, I'm not on MN, I have to be polite, such a drag.

mmm, lovely nibbles, which caterers have you used? Because I must find a reliable firm for Jocasta's 21st - you don't want anyone who might make off with your silver, after all.
