I had a blood test on Monday to test for Anemia. All came back ok. But the state of my arm is horrendous from the blood test. Is this normal do I need to worry?

Just to add I don’t normally bruise easily

I had a midwife butcher a blood draw once and my arm looked like that for days afterwards and now I can only have blood taken from the other arm as the vein has apparently disappeared in protest. There was nothing wrong with me.

Sgkvfy234 · 13/06/2019 19:55

Did it still ache days later?

You need to go straight to a walk-in and show them. They also need to be testing for much more than anaemia OP with bruising like that.

Sgkvfy234 · 13/06/2019 19:56

I went to pharmacy walk in as all our local doctors were shut this afternoon. He said it’s normal but to see dr tomorrow to put my mind at rest

Sorry I can’t remember how long it ached for afterwards but it definitely was painful. The midwife knew she’d caused damaged though as she struggled to get enough blood, admitted she hadn’t got it quite right and said to expect bruising.

Definitely not a bad idea to see the doctor just in case though. But hopefully it’s nothing.

Did you bend the arm afterwards? That increases bruising, you're better off keeping it straight (I learned that after years of hideous bruising). Some phlebotomists are better than others; I swear I've met some who should have been butchers.

Sgkvfy234 · 13/06/2019 20:07

Thank you, yes I drove home after wards. What was also weird I’ve had blood tests before been absolutely fine, but with this one when she was drawing the blood it really burned and didn’t feel like any blood test I’d had before.

I had blood drawn once when the nurse "spilled" quite a lot under the skin. I have hard to get at veins & wasn't overly bothered about it. She explained that it would look like extensive bruising as the spilled blood deteriorated over the coming days. Could this be what happened here?

Sgkvfy234 · 13/06/2019 20:13

Does it look the same as yours did? I was literally in and out in under a minute

I had this once. It really hurt when they took the blood which it never usually does and by time I had walked out and got to my car I had a gold ball sized lump and couldn’t bend my elbow. The Bruising over next few days was horrendous! My arm was black and blue. Went doctors and they said they must have blown a vein or hit artery which causes bleed underneath but was nothing to worry about. I’ve never had it happen since.

LoopyLou1981 · 13/06/2019 21:52

I had this once when giving blood. When I went to A&E two days later they said it was likely that needle had gone through my vein instead into it so it bled into the surrounding muscle. Caused a massive bruise and swelling. I seem to remember it went down in around 10-14 days x

hsegfiugseskufh · 13/06/2019 21:55

This happened to me. A specialist took my blood instead of the nurse and this happened. Cant remember what they said it was now. Missed the vein or did something to it. Anywho it cleared up on its own like any other bruise but it did hurt yes.

RandomMess · 13/06/2019 22:02

I got a haematoma from a dental injection, bruise was huge and painful and took 2 weeks to go away!

jomaIone · 13/06/2019 22:09

Precious poster very dramatic about goinh to walk in and further tests!!

These things happen with blood tests, she probably punctured the other side of the vein and it's bled into the skin and muscle causing severe brushing and aches but it will die down in a few days but will probably be all colours of the rainbow while it goes!! Hope it settles soon!!

cochineal7 · 14/06/2019 06:47

Yes had it once after blood donation. They said it must have pierced the vein so blood leaked under skin. It looks horrendous but will clear up.

swingofthings · 14/06/2019 06:49

I had the worse bruise after a blood test done at the hospital from a very senior experienced nurse. She just hit the wrong place. The area was really swollen and totally blue afterwards. It happened only once thankfully and I had quite a lot of blood tests done in my life.

Myusernameismud · 14/06/2019 06:52

I had similar when I had an arterial blood gas taken. I actually watched as the junior doctor tried to take the first one and my wrist ballooned in front of both our eyes. It was about the size of a lime! I was really unwell and in A&E at the time, and the poor doctor was horrified. She was so apologetic as she had to try it again in the other wrist (and ABGs are pretty painful) but thankfully she managed it second time around. It left a spectacular bruise though, that went halfway up my arm.

Sgkvfy234 · 14/06/2019 07:17

Thank you for your comments, It has put my mind at rest! I’m going to hate blood tests from now on!!
