To say Fathers’ day cards are generally a bit shit and sexist?

Disclaimer: I’m not in the UK, so maybe there’s a better selection there, though I doubt it - i don’t recall it being different when we lived there.

But the vast majority of cards here seem to follow the following themes:

-HA HA. You’re clueless dad, but we love you anyway. Let’s take the piss out of you! Happy fathers’ day!

  • You’re massively into [football/golf/insert MANLY hobby], and that’s all we know about you! Happy Father’s Day!
  • today is the day you can be LAZY, as you usually want to be (but can’t). Happy Fathers’ day!

AIBU in wishing there would be more cards that would be focused on positive sentiments, without overplaying a macho role model that many modern men don’t aspire to? If I compare with Mothers’ day cards, it’s really striking how massively gendered they are - MDCs focus on love and tenderness and wanting to make the mum feel wonderful, whereas FDCs are mostly about taking the piss, or conversely depicting the dad as a high achiever in spheres of life unrelated to fatherhood (eg hobbies).

Where are all the FD cards saying thanks for helping with my homework/ you’re a great cook/ I love it when you hug me?

That pisses me off. AIBU?

We never buy those shit store cards.

And good luck finding a card that says from your daughter and doesn’t have a princess/ballerina reference and/or covered in pink and glitter. Even the one with guinea pigs on had them wearing glittery tutus!! (This was really winding me up today!)

cricketmum84 · 13/06/2019 19:21

Totally agree. It's all either fart jokes or golf!

Dishevelled09 · 13/06/2019 19:31

There are some cards out there that aren't related to drinking farting taking the piss. There are some in Wilkos and M&S. I work in the greeting card industry, the big male sellers are often football themed, alcohol related, a rugby one was trialled didn't go so well so the retailers are trying to give what their customers want. One of the big retailers is selling a very rude range ( I was gobsmacked when I saw how smutty they are) alongside its more traditional range and both appeal to the customers, I wouldn't buy the rude style cards but each to their own! The female cards that sell well are prosecco, gin, floral or cake related.

The supermarkets etc are pretty crap but there are some good ones if you look. My DS is sending the attached and I got a super hero one for mother’s day!

You forgot one of the "dad themes" that pisses me off the most - all the cards about dad providing money and/or lifts. As if that's all they're good for.

You are right in that Father's Day cards are gendered and shit. But you are wrong to say that Mother's Day cards are better. They are equally gendered and shit. They are about housework or "girly" hobbies and treats like shopping and bubble baths. And they're all fucking pink with flowers on.

You are right but I did spot this today and loved it. I just wish my dad was still around to give it to him.

I got my DP one with daddy shark on it (do do do do do do), but DD is 1 and it's her favourite thing in the whole world currently...

This website is pretty good, there's plenty of fart jokes and frankly disturbing cards, but there's quite a few funny ones as well (you can filter out the rude ones Grin)

MorondelaFrontera · 13/06/2019 20:22

I am not sure where you shop, I bought some for my kids because I haven't have time to make them chose, 1 for my dad, 1 for my FIL, there was plenty of neutral choices.
plenty of crap and inappropriate cards too, but I still found things easily.

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/06/2019 15:26

Great minds, all of the PPs suggesting Thortful Wink

I got the Hey Dadee father’s day badge one from the youngest because she’s obsessed with Hey Duggee (and we rather like it too!) and one of David Attenborough telling him he’s an amazing species because eldest is obsessed with DA and watches with her Dad.

The supermarket ads are just as bad. Apparently all fathers just want a steak and a beer. Women want chocolate, prosecco/gin and flowers.
It’s shit.
