To say Fathers’ day cards are generally a bit shit and sexist?

Disclaimer: I’m not in the UK, so maybe there’s a better selection there, though I doubt it - i don’t recall it being different when we lived there.

But the vast majority of cards here seem to follow the following themes:

-HA HA. You’re clueless dad, but we love you anyway. Let’s take the piss out of you! Happy fathers’ day!

  • You’re massively into [football/golf/insert MANLY hobby], and that’s all we know about you! Happy Father’s Day!
  • today is the day you can be LAZY, as you usually want to be (but can’t). Happy Fathers’ day!

AIBU in wishing there would be more cards that would be focused on positive sentiments, without overplaying a macho role model that many modern men don’t aspire to? If I compare with Mothers’ day cards, it’s really striking how massively gendered they are - MDCs focus on love and tenderness and wanting to make the mum feel wonderful, whereas FDCs are mostly about taking the piss, or conversely depicting the dad as a high achiever in spheres of life unrelated to fatherhood (eg hobbies).

Where are all the FD cards saying thanks for helping with my homework/ you’re a great cook/ I love it when you hug me?

That pisses me off. AIBU?

We also have 'You do nothing but drink beer/wine and sit in a shed with your name on the door'

BigRedLondonBus · 13/06/2019 17:27

Are there really loads of farting cards? I don’t buy Father’s Day cards so haven’t look but seriously? Just why Confused

GreenTulips · 13/06/2019 17:31

Are factory only have pink or blue age badges
Pink or blue birthday cards
Pink or blue balloons for ages

It’s all very sexist

ForalltheSaints · 13/06/2019 17:37

My father died a few years ago, and I tend to avoid card shops and stationers as much as possible at this time of year. Though when he was alive, more often than not I found a card without a message and wrote one, as most Father's Day cards on offer were tacky.

omione · 13/06/2019 17:41

Cant find a decent card for my DD, he is 87 doesnt drink play sport or like crude jokes

BettysLeftTentacle · 13/06/2019 17:47

There all at thortful.com. I don’t work for them and this isn’t a shameless plug - promise!! I bought one from each of my girls that relate specifically to shared interests between them and their dad. I also bought one for my own DF that relates to what a crap parent he is in a passive aggressively. They’ve got 100s on the website from the tweet rubbish you get in Clinton’s to slightly better to specialised and unusual. I recommend a look.

Bluerussian · 13/06/2019 17:55

I've bought one for my husband with cars on it. It says, "Happy Father's Day to my Husband" (he is a father as well as a husband), and he likes cars.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2019 17:56

Yes, it's mostly beer/golf/football.
You really have to root around for anything else.

I've got a blank one for dh, with a v nice smiley dog on the front and no corny/inappropriate wording.

Nice blank cards are often best IMO.

PositiveVibez · 13/06/2019 17:59

As a pp mentioned up thread, there seems to be sone really disgusting ones about ball sacks and sperm etc. They keep popping up on my Instagram ads.

I'm no prude, but they are vile. Slogans such as 'I'm glad mum never swallowed', or 'I'm glad I wasn't just a wank'. Also 'you're a cunt, but you're my cunt'.

Just who would buy these!!!!!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/06/2019 18:04

DH is teetotal so that rules out about half the cards immediately.

Vulpine · 13/06/2019 18:07

So you won't like Peppa pig and the Simpsons then op?

BorisBadunov · 13/06/2019 18:09

Yep, forgot beer as a theme. DH likes a beer every now and then, but that’s definitely not what the DC identify him with.

I also forgot about the superhero cards - are there really many dads out there who are superhero to their kids? If so, that’s just weird.

I’m not sure how that’s relevant. But since you ask, I’m not a huge fan of either. And neither would be representative of DH (thank goodness).

@PositiveVibez Shock

Who on earth would send a card like that to their FATHER?

I get the rude ones to boyfriends/ girlfriends etc because (although I wouldn’t personally send one) joking about your sex life to the other person in your sex life seems fine ... but joking about your parents?

Cherylshaw · 13/06/2019 18:16

I get mine of Moonpig that way I can make them personal and funny.
I think all cards in shops just now are shit I struggle to even get a decent birthday card these days

ToastyFingers · 13/06/2019 18:18

I agree generally but this year dd managed to pick one with a mermaid on. I was quite impressed actually.

bookmum08 · 13/06/2019 18:20

This has reminded me I haven't been card shopping yet!
I remember being in Card Factory struggling for a decent Mothers Day card and a woman next to me said to her mate "All I want is a picture of a cat and Happy Mother's Day. Why is that so hard to get?" and I realised I was searching for the exact same thing.
My Dad would probably like a picture of a cat.
All cards should just be of cats.

PottyPotterer · 13/06/2019 18:23

I was card shopping today and couldn't find any I liked or that seemed appropriate. I did get a really nice one for ds to his grandad who's very much a father figure to him. Actually the grandad ones were much better than the father ones.

PottyPotterer · 13/06/2019 18:24

I actually saw a father's day card today 'from the cat'!

pikapikachu · 13/06/2019 18:26

My kids struggled to find a non-gushy card for their Dad. (They love him but it's not the best relationship iyswim) I noticed a lot focused on golf/beer/footie which are not interests of their Dad. (He's an ex-functioning alcoholic so beer is a sore point) Others had teddies and stuff on it which isn't my kids or ex's style either.
We settled on generic cards that just said DAD on the front in fancy font.

NeitherNowtNorSummat01 · 13/06/2019 18:34

I got this one from thortful website.
Son is only 2 though so very apt

To say Fathers’ day cards are generally a bit shit and sexist?
Vulpine · 13/06/2019 18:38

Both the fathers in Peppa pig and the Simpsons, daddy pig and homer - are portrayed as buffoons. Thats the relevance. I can't get too worked up about it mind.

FannyCann · 13/06/2019 18:39

It's not just Father's Day/Mother's day cards. Birthday cards and increasingly Christmas cards too. Crude, vulgar, sexist, women's cards often featuring chocolate/wine/gin/shoes/shopping. Men's involving golf/beer/wine/football etc plus a range of poor humour jokes.
Sometimes I think it would be more fun to do a sort of supermarket sweep of card shops and randomly pick a card from the pile in the drawer to send to someone - happy birthday 18 year old/sympathy at this difficult time/so sad you're leaving etc irrespective of the actual occasion. How old do I have to be to do that and confirm my status as batty old bat?

Vulpine · 13/06/2019 18:44

I agree - i dont like sweary cards, but women have been the butt of graphic humour for years - think over blown breasts etc and seaside postcards - so sure the guys can take the flak for a bit without crumbling

firstimemamma · 13/06/2019 18:53

I made a Father’s Day card from ds and it has his footprints on the front - far more personal than a card from the shop.

Another alternative is to design your own card on moonpig or similar Smile
