...for the christening of their first child?

Just came across a mention of this and it got me wondering. We opted not to have kids, so it didn't apply to us. I've never heard of anyone doing it in this day and age, which I imagine has as much to do with people having kids later into marriage as anyone else! Grin Curious to know if anyone has done it, though - and if so, how the heck did you keep the cake fresh all that time? Grin

We had three tiers of sponge so no. No one I know likes fruitcake. I can't have children so probably for the best I don't have the reminder and we wouldn't have had any children christened anyway

goldopals · 12/06/2019 17:48

We got married last year and saved a chunk in the freezer which will be eaten on our first anniversary.

stucknoue · 12/06/2019 17:53

I have been to them, tends to be traditional couples who haven't got kids already and plan to have kids straight away, my friends son was born 9 months and one week after the wedding.

RuthW · 12/06/2019 18:12

Yes we did. No baby after three years so it was used as my nephew's christening cake in 1992.

CherryPavlova · 12/06/2019 18:14

I thought everyone did.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/06/2019 18:18

My mum saved ours for the christening of my first child. I wasn’t aware she had done it.
Anyway, she completely forgot about it (frozen in a chest freezer) until 18 months after the christening. We just binned it.

IntoValhalla · 12/06/2019 18:19

We kept the top tier of our wedding cake and used it as the top tier of our DC1’s first birthday cake.
We took the icing and marzipan off, put it in an airtight container and just slung some brandy at it once a month or so until we needed it and it was delicious when the time came! We had it re-iced and decorated.
(DC1 was conceived about 2 weeks after our wedding, so all in all we didn’t have to keep the cake that long!)

We had a sponge cake and froze it in portions to eat on our wedding anniversary. It's tasted fine so far although slightly dry at our third anniversary.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 12/06/2019 18:27

We saved ours. Had some of the middle tier at our first anniversary, and took the top tier to the Christening the following year. Some guests did have it, particularly some who couldn't attend the wedding. We got a sponge cake specifically for the Christening too.

It had dried a little but still tasted good after two years. It must have moved house with us too!

2dogsand1baby · 12/06/2019 18:27

We did! Our DS has a 'welcome to the world' party in summer and will get it re-iced for this.

Poetryinaction · 12/06/2019 18:29

I did. Christening was less than 2 years after the wedding.

LittleCandle · 12/06/2019 18:31

I did - well, the middle tier actually, as the top tier was sponge so I could have a piece! Fruit cake is the work of the devil and I am glad that it is no longer the standard at weddings. However, it didn't take up any freezer space and I am astounded (although I should be really) that people don't know that the correct way to store fruit cake is to put it in a tin and seal the lid with parcel tape. It was re-iced, but only because XH wanted to have that done. I didn't get a piece of DD1's christening cake. I'm sure we had a sponge one for DD2.

foreverhanging · 12/06/2019 18:34

I ate mine with some tea. I also didn't christen dd and never would Grin

myfingersarenotsogreen · 12/06/2019 18:38

I did, but then I knew I was expecting DS 2 when we got married! fruit cake and it kept fine for 6 months!

TrickyD · 12/06/2019 19:00

Mine was a fruit cake and my mum saved the top tier after my wedding in 1966.

DS2 was born at home in 1972 and mum came to stay, bringing the cake with her.

It was delicious, had kept perfectly and we all enjoyed sitting around my bed munching it.

However, the original bridegroom did not benefit from the cake , I had left him and had remarried the previous year. DH2 and I are still together, it was our 48th anniversary on Monday.

2tired2bewitty · 12/06/2019 19:19

We did, even though there was almost exactly 8 years between wedding and christening. Mind you MIL had put so much rum in it it would probably have survived until dd’s wedding day Grin

user1492729177 · 12/06/2019 19:51

We removed the icing from ours and wrapped it in grease proof paper, got it re-iced (by my granny) for my baby boys (21 now) Christening

AnybodysDude · 12/06/2019 19:54

We did! Married in Sep, christened our adopted son 3.5 years later. We had a christening cake made, and then the baker decorated the top tier of our wedding cake to match and place alongside it.

It was extra special to us because at the time we saved the cake we had no clue about the heartbreak of infertility that was waiting for us around the corner, so being able to finally use it for such a happy occasion meant a lot.

happymummy12345 · 12/06/2019 20:05

We didn't as one our wedding cake was all red velvet. And two we knew we would never get any of our children christened due to conflicting religions. I wanted our child christened my religion and dh wanted our child christened his religion. So we didn't get him christened and won't be with any future children
