to wonder if anyone really saves the top tier of wedding cake...

...for the christening of their first child?

Just came across a mention of this and it got me wondering. We opted not to have kids, so it didn't apply to us. I've never heard of anyone doing it in this day and age, which I imagine has as much to do with people having kids later into marriage as anyone else! Grin Curious to know if anyone has done it, though - and if so, how the heck did you keep the cake fresh all that time? Grin

I saved it for us to eat on our 1 year anniversary. I cut it up, wrapped in cling film, then foil, then put it in Tupperware. Came out perfect a year later. It was a sponge cake too!

magneticmumbles · 12/06/2019 12:53
  • and put it in the freezer
JovialNickname · 12/06/2019 12:59

My mum saved the top tier of my wedding cake for the christening of our first child. She then got very drunk at the reception and ended up eating it all in the car on the way home.

LesLavandes · 12/06/2019 13:03

I think I did but it must have got lost moving house. I however kept all the little iced decorations until I chucked them in bin 28 years later upon divorce

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/06/2019 13:07

And I just realised that I didn't say that we saved our, wrapped in an airtight tin for 5 years before we ate it!

StCharlotte · 12/06/2019 13:07

We kept ours (traditional fruit cake with marzipan and icing etc) but we couldn't have children. A few years after the wedding we were moving house and when packing, DH found the cake and we agreed to throw it away.

I opened the box for a final look, unwrapped the cake and... nothing. A couple of crumbs. All packaging (several layers) untouched. No holes, airtight etc. One of life's great mysteries Confused

TheCatDidSay · 12/06/2019 13:08

Nope as we didn’t have fruit cake. Me and dh both can’t stand the stuff.

DelurkingAJ · 12/06/2019 13:09

We did (well, middle tier, top was sponge). Sliced off icing and froze. Reiced for DS1 christening 2 years later. Tasted delicious!

PerfectPeony2 · 12/06/2019 13:11

I had a one tied cake and it was sponge! Plus no christening.

I think so many people do christenings when they’re not actually religious or an active member of the church. I think it’s wrong to do that.

Yes, the family celebration (and cute dress obviously!) is a good reason to do it so we opted for a 1st birthday party instead. If she wants to be Christened she can choose to when she’s a bit older.

MorondelaFrontera · 12/06/2019 13:12

No fruit cake here either, so didn't even give it a thought.

bellabasset · 12/06/2019 13:14

We saved the top tier for our first anniversary, which was my parents 25th. Mum had wrapped the cake and kept feeding it with brandy. We took off the marzipan and icing and redid it. The cake was very rich, absolutely delicious.

I am one of the people who love fruit cake, but I also love chocolate cake.

Backwoodsgirl · 12/06/2019 13:16

We did, it was 7 years old at the christening. Tasted great

Birdie6 · 12/06/2019 13:18

My children are adults and we didn't do it back then - I never knew anyone who did. You just ate the cake on the day, and when your children came along you made a nice new cake.

JE17 · 12/06/2019 13:18

Friends of ours did this. They'd asked for 2 tiers fruit cake and 1 tier sponge for their wedding cake. One sponge and one fruit tier served at the wedding, remaining fruit tier saved for christening. When the time came to eat the third layer it was discovered that the baker had messed up the order and made a 2 sponge/ 1 fruit tier cake. What a waste!

Fudgecakes · 12/06/2019 13:19

My mum saved her top tier after marrying in the 60s....very much the donecthing back then. She wrapped it well and asked my nan to store it for her. 2.5 yes later along came dbro so mum asked nan for the cake as she was organising his christening. She told my crestfallen mum that the cake has gone mouldy so she had to bin it. Years later with guilt eating away at her she confessed to my mum she lied about it being mouldy. Turns out she felt a bit peckish for fruit cake this one day and had a little corner of cake....then a slice 😯...and another which led to her demolishing the whole thing over the space of a few days!! Naughty Nan!!

ibblebibbledibble · 12/06/2019 13:23

We did. We put the top tier in the freezer. We had that and I made a fresh chocolate cake for our first-born’s christening.

Wixi · 12/06/2019 13:35

We saved ours until we moved and threw it away! We had our DD after we had been married 18 years, and have not had her christened so no need for the cake.

Fifthtimelucky · 12/06/2019 13:35

We did, but six years later when I got it out for my daughter's christening, I realised it would have to be re-iced and didn't have the energy either to do it myself or find someone else to do it, so I bought a new one.

21 years on, the 27 year old cake is still sitting in its original box at the back of a cupboard somewhere!

Miltonj · 12/06/2019 13:38

My Auntie and Uncle saved theirs for there 10th wedding anniversary (apparently that's another tradition). I happened to be there and shared it with them... It was good... not stale or off at all!! No idea how they stored it though, especially after multiple across the country house moves!

DinoGreen · 12/06/2019 13:42

We did Smile we had bottom tier fruit, middle tier sponge, top tier fruit, and saved the top tier. DS’s christening was the day after our 5th wedding anniversary and the cake had been in the freezer all that time, well wrapped, following us from house to house. I didn’t try it myself as I don’t like fruit cake but lots of people ate some and said it was very nice - we didn’t even re-ice. We also had a freshly baked sponge cake, for the non-fruit cake eaters.

BeanBag7 · 12/06/2019 13:55

We kept the top tier of ours in the freezer and had it for our daughters first birthday. It was fruit cake so was fine frozen.

This wasnt the plan originally but the top tier wasnt cut and eaten at the wedding and we were going on honeymoon so put it in the freezer. Then it never seemed like the right occasion to bring out a wedding cake. Your parents coming round for a cup of tea doesnt seem important enough to break out the frozen wedding cake.

By the time DD was 1 it had been in the freezer 4 years (and 2 house moved!) and I was sick of looking at it so quite happy to have it for her birthday!

TheLionQueen1 · 12/06/2019 13:59

We did! Then forgot it and it's still in my freezer Grin Maybe the next one...or maybe I should probably bin it now!

kenandbarbie · 12/06/2019 14:09

We did and it kept fresh for four years. It was a fruit cake and was re-iced. I love old traditions!

DappledThings · 12/06/2019 14:10

We had a three tier fruitcake. Both love a good fruitcake. Bottom two tiers were shared out at wedding. We took the top tier away with us for our minimoon the following week and ate the entire thing in that week. Bloody lovely.

Lozz22 · 12/06/2019 14:13

I did my top tier was fruit, but 12 years later, a separation and 2 losses with my new Partner I think the cake would be somehow rather rank now
