to wonder if anyone really saves the top tier of wedding cake...

...for the christening of their first child?

Just came across a mention of this and it got me wondering. We opted not to have kids, so it didn't apply to us. I've never heard of anyone doing it in this day and age, which I imagine has as much to do with people having kids later into marriage as anyone else! Grin Curious to know if anyone has done it, though - and if so, how the heck did you keep the cake fresh all that time? Grin

We did. There was 18 months between the wedding and birth. It was fruitcake and it tasted fine. Married in 2015.

LoafofSellotape · 12/06/2019 14:25

We kept it for our first anniversary. 😊

DramaAlpaca · 12/06/2019 14:27

We did, married in 1990 & first child in 1993. It was a fruit cake & I just replaced the icing. It was fine.

Lastbustowhitehawk · 12/06/2019 14:49

You've just reminded me that we did! Well, MIL made the cake and wanted to do the top tier fruit cake and freezing malarkey. She's lovely so I didn't mention that DH and I had no intention of christening any future children! Wedding was 6 years ago, DS is 3 months old and to my knowledge the cake is still in MIL's freezer. If I had forgotten then I'm assuming she has too...

Iwantacookie · 12/06/2019 14:54

I saved mine and served it at my divorce party.
It still tasted lovely

DonkeyHohtay · 12/06/2019 14:56

My first child hasn't been christened. He's 16. Neither have the other two.

We had a sponge cake for the wedding anyway, neither of us like fruit cake. Minging.

tinnitusqueen · 12/06/2019 14:58

Yes I froze mine. We had a piece on our first anniversary and it wasn't as good but still very yummy. It brought back wonderful memories and I had a little cry :-)

Another piece is still in the freezer ready for the christening or whenever but just for us at home. I will have new christening cakes made.

LadyRannaldini · 12/06/2019 15:02

I’ve never understood why you would? If I had christened my dc I would of wanted a nice new cake not the leftovers that had been frozen from my wedding

A quality cake would not need freezing, I've been known to find the Christmas cake in November and it's been much improved.
My late mother used to make beautiful wedding cakes and the top tier was almost always kept for the first Christening, it was the norm then, 50s and 60s. She would occasionally be asked to redo the icing as something appropriate.

Minai · 12/06/2019 15:03

We did but not to save for a christening. I defrosted a slice a couple of years later and it tasted absolutely vile so I got rid of it!

FudgeBrownie2019 · 12/06/2019 15:04

Yep, ours is still in the freezer 9 years on. Not a clue why we're saving it, but I remain convinced that after this length of time we'll be cursed if we chuck it away so I'm keeping it til I'm 90.

HavelockVetinari · 12/06/2019 15:05

We did! We froze it, but bastarding infertility meant we didn't get to use it for 5 years. It was rank!

PugPupsMum · 12/06/2019 15:11

We did it, we were saving it for our unborn (actually, not even concieved yet!) baby's 1st birthday.

But then (about 6 months after our wedding) we moved house and we didnt have a freezer yet at the new house so we defrosted and ate it sitting in front of the tv on a boring weekday night Grin

I am expecting now and plan to get the top tier re-created by our wedding cake maker for baby's 1st birthday. It will be fresh, and no one needs to know its not the original!

SCST01 · 12/06/2019 15:14

We did... And discovered it during a house move several years later Blush. It still smelled alright, but we didn't chance eating it. Turned out that out children weren't to arrive until some time later than we anticipated Grin

redstapler · 12/06/2019 15:14

I still have mine in the freezer. We got married in 2000.......

soulrunner · 12/06/2019 15:15

Like pug but we moved overseas so I chucked it out. My mum’s friend made me s lemon sponge for the christening which was amazing

Timeless19 · 12/06/2019 15:19

We had a sponge, defrosted it and ate it a year later on our anniversary as I mostly wanted the freezer space back. We did have a baby by our first anniversary but we weren't going to christen her so no point hanging onto it beyond a year.

Robin2323 · 12/06/2019 15:59

We did.
I was 3 months pregnant so it was wrapped up and stored.
It was re-Iced and looked and tasted beautiful:)

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 12/06/2019 16:02

We did and it was nearly 5 years later! It had been sealed in a tin and about 98 layers of cling film. We trimmed off all the icing and marzipan and the outer inch or so of cake all round and had it reiced. Tasted the same as it did the first time around.

Thecowinthemeadowgoesmoo · 12/06/2019 16:03

I did! Cake was fine, removed original icing and redid it. Baby was born 3 years after wedding, it was a fruit cake obviously!

Pheasantplucker2 · 12/06/2019 17:24

We did, I was pregnant when we got married! Christening was a year almost to the day later, we re-iced and fed it a bit more and it was lovely! (Fruit cake)

Boohooyouho · 12/06/2019 17:28

I dropped the top tier of mine in the car park while we were loading up the cars to go home the next morning. Still ate it though, just picked out the dirty bits from the general smashed cake

mindutopia · 12/06/2019 17:31

We aren’t Christian but we froze ours and ate it on our 1 year anniversary. It was really good.

Russell19 · 12/06/2019 17:32

I got married in July, saved it and redid it as a Christmas cake the December after Grin was lovely xx

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/06/2019 17:38

We kept ours 11 years. It had been baked and iced by professional bakers. We kept it in a quality street tin with the lid taped on with gaffer tape. When we had ds christened we had another professional bakers chip the royal icing off and re-ice it. It was lovely.

twitterbird · 12/06/2019 17:46

I did! I re iced it though
