To live in a 4 bed mortgage free for £250k

Where can I find a really good 4 bed for £250k?

Not joking - that's where we are at post divorce. The world is my oyster but ideally I need a great primary, secondary, and a flexible school hours (9-3) job (DC have medical stuff going on so can't manage wraparound childcare). Anywhere?

Agree lincs/norfolk/Cambridgeshire.

Isatis · 10/06/2019 23:27

Have you thought about Kent? Margate has some nice parts and properties are reasonable.

Not if the children's medical issues lead to special educational needs. Kent is truly appalling on SEN, as verified by Ofsted.

CoastalWave · 10/06/2019 23:31

The Wirral where I'm from. Excellent schools. Lovely houses. Fab hospital. Christ knows why more people don't live there (shush don't tell everyone)

Or further to the east..Warrington way? Plenty for that price in good areas.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/06/2019 23:33

Another saying NE (Seaham, Shields, some parts of County Durham) up to Northumberland (Morpeth) for access to Newcastle for RVI (excellent hospital) etc

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/06/2019 23:45

OP people are saying that's doable in some parts of Kent and Essex, I live in Essex and you won't get a 4 bed for 300k let alone 250k unless it's a complete wreck in an area you can't even wash around, let alone an area with nice schools etc. We paid £310 for a complete project in an area with good primaries and fantastic grammar schools and ours is a 3 bed semi. I've said it before on these kinds of threads, no one should have to live in Tilbury. Spread your wings and look further afield, there are some lovely places in this thread.

Wakefield or Castleford. Handy for Leeds, good transport links and you get a lot of house for your money. Maybe not as ‘desirable’ as some towns but the people are so friendly that it would make up for it!

Justaboy · 11/06/2019 00:14

ShivD How should that be pronounced is it Flan-eth-ley or
Plan-eth-ley??

Just curious good reason!

Justaboy · 11/06/2019 00:20

Addenbrookes Hospital and a new £300 million children's hospital is going to be built there:-

Yes so i hear, but they won't be able to staff it, have you seen the house prices there in Cambridge they're just Evil ? You wont get your £250 K 4 bedder there best is Peterborough as best I remember there are some nice villages to the east of that don't know re pricing.

Further east are the Fens! strange places those very very Flat lands!

Justaboy · 11/06/2019 00:21

West Dammit!! for the nice villages..

1moremum · 11/06/2019 00:30

The idea that Scotland is cheap is a myth...as I try to explain to my family who wonder why we live in England and not Scotland. You'll get a really good 4 bed detached house in most parts of Lincolnshire for £250k. Scotland you'll struggle.

I just did a quick search of OntheMarket using Glasgow+5 miles, 250K top price, 4 bedroom minimum and got 133 results within 5 miles of the city, a number of which are listed far enough below that amount that you might not have to offer the full 250k you have to spend.

SwimmerGirl40 · 11/06/2019 00:44

Has anyone mentioned Lancaster? On the M6 and West Coast mainline, you can be in London in 2.5 hours.

Lovely little city with a good hospital and good schools. Close to the beach, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Also 50 mins from Manchester.

SwimmerGirl40 · 11/06/2019 00:49

Some of those properties are in Todmorden and Buxton, hellish commute into Manchester.

Be careful in Manchester as our road and public transport infrastructure isn’t as good as the south. I’d recommend starting another “moving to Manchester” thread if you’re considering Manchester and us locals can tell you what each area is like.

FermatsTheorem · 11/06/2019 13:07

Can I just point out that doing a Rightmove search for a part of the country you don't live in currently means exactly jack shit. Any town in Britain will have nice bits, middling bits and complete shit holes you wouldn't want to live in if you were paid to. Often within half a mile of each other.

Just saying "here's a nice looking 4 bed in Torbay/Glasgow/Preston/Leicester for 250K" means nothing. Anyone can do up a house to look good in the photos. What they can't fix is the antisocial neighbours, the failing school down the road, the unemployment rate, the fact that average wages in the region are way below the national average.

OP I'd recommend you disregard any posts that aren't from someone actually living in the area.

SwimmerGirl40 · 11/06/2019 13:16

@fermatstheorem
Well said. Exactly why I had responded to Romanyqueen’s thread about suitable houses in Manchester (as it looks like all she had done was a quick Rightmove search on houses within 25 miles of Manchester). I live in Manchester and was a bit shocked that romanyqueen would be recommending some of those places to the OP.

AndTheSeaRollsOn · 11/06/2019 13:32

Suffolk and Norfolk. There’s towns near Aldeburgh/Snape that you can get 4 beds for for around £230k - even better deals if you head out towards Halesworth. Plenty of towns on train line and can be in to Stratford within two hours.

Ipswich hospital have been fabulous with me since childhood. Norfolk and Norwich hospital were great during uni.

Reallynowdear · 11/06/2019 13:34

Hi OP,

One of my children has heart disease, another suffers from nocturnal epilepsy. We are regular attendees of the the Freeman hospital and the RVI, both in Newcastle for support groups as well as medical appointments. I cannot praise them enough, I get a bit emotional when I think how lucky we are.

NannyRed · 11/06/2019 13:43

West Midlands. We have a beautiful, new (2010) new build, three stories, three bathrooms, gardens front and back, garage and drive home at under £200k . Less than a ten minute walk to the train station, 15 minutes and in the city centre.
Restaurants, theatres, ballet, opera, cinema, music venues, china town, parks and more.
Birmingham is underrated.

ScoobyCan · 11/06/2019 13:48

Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond. Am going through all replies and comments and is taking me a while but if you don't mind I will have questions regarding specific areas in time.

Thank you.

South Liverpool (allerton/mossley hill), close to Alder Hey Childrens hosp.

Constantsarechanging · 11/06/2019 17:37

Scotland!

winnerwinnerchristmasdinner · 11/06/2019 17:42

Just seen loads on rightmove in Milton Keynes Smile

GoJetterGirl · 11/06/2019 17:56

Tamworth is nice, not a massive commute to the children’s hospital in Birmingham either
