To live in a 4 bed mortgage free for £250k

Where can I find a really good 4 bed for £250k?

Not joking - that's where we are at post divorce. The world is my oyster but ideally I need a great primary, secondary, and a flexible school hours (9-3) job (DC have medical stuff going on so can't manage wraparound childcare). Anywhere?

Even in the South, if you can afford it, you could probably get a 4 bed for around £300k outside London. Small mortgage, so if you have an income and can afford repayments, it shouldn't be unmanageable. Obviously, I don't know your financial situation!

AndromedaPerseus · 10/06/2019 22:35

My priority would be to find which hospitals have an established department which could provide excellent care for your dcs condition. Ask his current consultant and take from there

FancyAPint · 10/06/2019 22:36

250k mortgage free whilst your children are still school age? Wow you are a great sales person! I'm sure you'll talk yourself into a good job no problem.

CoffeeCoffeeTea · 10/06/2019 22:39

I'd go to Scotland,

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/06/2019 22:43

Northumberland. Gorgeous countryside and the best beaches in the country. You'll be amazed at what you can afford property wise, excellent schools and internationally renowned hospitals.

Preston & it's surrounding villages.

It is being gentrified with its city deal, loads of new builds competing so the house builds are higher quality, shops going up so plenty of access to retail, you have easy access to the coast and beach in Lytham, but you also have the world at your finger tips with Manchester airport only about 30ish miles away. You have plenty of jobs in Preston since there is a large hospital and university but there are even more jobs in the surrounding area down to Manchester. It has some of the fastest broadband speeds with virgin and BT fibre cabled directly to the homes. Many new builds around Preston are a part of a green initiative so they include solar panels and you get paid some months for the electricity. If shopping matters you also have access to Costco in 3 cities, Manchester, Haydock, and Liverpool.

Because there is so much competition, you could easily get 5% off via deposit contribution, so you could probably look at property around £260k

Outskirts of Sheffield, probably the SE side. Easy access to M1 and A1, not too far to the Peak District/Sherwood Forest, and Sheffield Children's Hospital.

BumandChips · 10/06/2019 22:47

East Midlands. Derby/Nottingham/Leicester. All have large, good hospitals.

I second this. Good hospitals and you can get a decent house. Not Lincolnshire as has already been suggested. It’s the middle of nowhere and there is no decent healthcare.

Serin · 10/06/2019 22:47

Dear God OP, ignore the Bamfurlong one.
I grew up in the WN2 postcode and the schools are awful. Crime is high. Employment low. Personally wouldn't let Wigan infirmary treat my dog let alone my child.

nickymanchester · 10/06/2019 22:49

Others have already said Lincolnshire and just to the south is Peterborough which is very well priced and is also close to Cambridge.

Here are 84 four bed detached and semi-detached houses in Peterborough for between £220k-£250k. You can even get a new build for that price as well:-

Peterborough houses

Peterborough has got a great hospital that's very new and also just down the road in Cambridge there's Addenbrookes Hospital and a new £300 million children's hospital is going to be built there:-

Pioneering children's hospital will revolutionise care for the region’s youngest patients

But house prices in Cambridge are a lot higher than in Peterborough so you will struggle to find a four bed house there for your price.

There are also lots of jobs going in the Peterborough/Huntingdon/Cambridge areas.

gingerbread88 · 10/06/2019 22:49

If you want to stay south, some parts of Essex and Kent that's doable

stucknoue · 10/06/2019 22:53

Leicester has plenty in that bracket though not in the best neighbourhoods now

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/06/2019 22:54

What about contact with your ex? Don't the kids need to be within reasonable distance?

Bonkerz · 10/06/2019 22:55

Nuneaton in Warwickshire. Some amazing houses for that price and close to Birmingham Coventry and Leicester!

DonkeyHohtay · 10/06/2019 22:57

Glasgow. Either of these are well within your budget, nice area, good schools and one of Scotland's biggest children's hospitals just up the road.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Luton?

The town centre is not great, but I live in a leafy/very English part on the outskirts of Luton, bordering onto Hertfordshire

MitziK · 10/06/2019 23:03

Several mates have moved to Shields/Newcastle and Morpeth/Alnwick area.

One catches a train back down here on a Monday, works Tuesday -Thursday and then travels back, earning enough to keep himself comfortably in a massive Victorian flat conversion (and no, he isn't remarkably well paid, either).

ConferencePear · 10/06/2019 23:05

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Derby.
This one has good schools and is near a good hospital -

This one has an even better school but is not so close to the hospital.
