To live in a 4 bed mortgage free for £250k

Where can I find a really good 4 bed for £250k?

Not joking - that's where we are at post divorce. The world is my oyster but ideally I need a great primary, secondary, and a flexible school hours (9-3) job (DC have medical stuff going on so can't manage wraparound childcare). Anywhere?

Torquay /paignton

OrchidInTheSun · 10/06/2019 20:50

Where in the world do you want to live OP? You can find 4 bed houses for that price even in the South East :)

ScoobyCan · 10/06/2019 20:50

How serious are the child medical issues? Do you need to be near a tertiary hospital/specialist paediatric hospital?

Serious enough for consultant care on a regular basis.

Thank you all. There is hope. I'm going out of my mind because we are in the south and I can barely get a shed with no windows for these numbers.

Grammar schools on the Wirral, but other schools are good, too.

CountFosco · 10/06/2019 20:50

What kind of work do you do? Surely you need to be where the work is. Plus, surely you need to remain in your current area so your ex can have regular contact with the DC? Or is he not interested/isn't safe to leave the kids with?

Happyspud · 10/06/2019 20:51

Here you go. Excellent, safe, family oriented location. Within 5mins of about 4 excellent primaries. 15mins to Belfast centre. 3 mins to large shopping centre. Free medical care and prescriptions in NI. Free schooling is excellent.

HollowTalk · 10/06/2019 20:52

First one I looked at.

Happyspud · 10/06/2019 20:52

Oh and you’re 10-20 mins from both major hospitals.

MojoMoon · 10/06/2019 20:52

The job seems like much more of an problem than the house.
What skills do you have? What job would you be qualified to do?
School hour only jobs are very hard to come by almost anywhere.

Bluntness100 · 10/06/2019 20:53

Scotland you can totally get a lovely four bed in some fab areas for this price , I know as I was recently looking for a friend.

Alabasterangel6 · 10/06/2019 20:53

Staffordshire Moorlands. You can get a 4 bed detached for that easily and be within 30 mins of the Universtity Hospital of North Staffs.

Wigan's surrounding areas - Standish, Aspull, West Houghton (that's Bolton though). Lovely countryside but close enough to motorways, towns and the bigger cities or Manchester maybe Preston at a stretch so your job hunting could be over a wider area. Also in distance of hospitals for medical issues.

Crapplepie · 10/06/2019 20:53

I've not long bought a 4/5 bedroom house in Orkney for 250k. It needs cosmetic, and some minor structural work - any house, of that size, not out in the sticks, in this area, will. Great schools, safe to let kids roam, jobs can be tricky unless you're in the NHS/Council, but you'd be surprised what you can find if you're prepared to be a bit flexible. Schools are always looking for TAs etc. New hospital opening at the end of the week. Happiest place to live in 2018 apparently Wink

Wallasey/ New Brighton on the Wirral - no Grammar schools but good single sex schools

good house prices, large local hospital, beach, nice sea front, close to Liverpool, Chester and Wales - I grew up there and will be moving back one day!

Liverpool - we have alder hey children's hosp. Several areas in and around which you can get 4/5 bed house.

hidinginthenightgarden · 10/06/2019 20:55

Bury, lancashire (chorley, rawtenstall, rossendale).

ScoobyCan · 10/06/2019 20:55

@CountFosco - considering ex is seriously good at hiding £££ I'm really not that bothered about where we go as long as I get bang for the (frankly pitiful / minimal) buck he's offering. I'm a sales person - houses, insurance, ice to the Inuit sort of thing.

I am following this with interest as I am in a similar position, slightly smaller budget and wanting a 3 bed...but in all other ways our needs are almost identical OP. I shall be having a good look through the links here. In some ways it's really exciting but I am also terrified of leaving the SE where I was born and have lived all my life!
