To live in a 4 bed mortgage free for £250k

ScoobyCan · 10/06/2019 20:39

Where can I find a really good 4 bed for £250k?

Not joking - that's where we are at post divorce. The world is my oyster but ideally I need a great primary, secondary, and a flexible school hours (9-3) job (DC have medical stuff going on so can't manage wraparound childcare). Anywhere?

I'd say you probably need to find the job before you find the house to buy. There are lots of places in the UK where a four bed is doable for that sort of price, but you need to make sure the work is available too.

Do you not need to stay close to the kid's dad?

SnuffleBadger · 10/06/2019 20:56

North Staffordshire. You will be close to university hospital of north midlands. Manchester children's and Birmingham children's hospitals nearby too if your DC require specialist care.

Crapplepie · 10/06/2019 20:56

Re health issues, anyone who requires care that can't be provided here is flown down to Aberdeen Royal infirmary. For example, people receiving chemo could be flown down and up on the same day. You are an air ambulance away if things go wrong, but the helicopter pilots will move hell and high water to get patients to the mainland, no matter the weather.

ffs74 · 10/06/2019 20:57

Leicester? Good transport links, lots to do and you'd get a nice house for 250k.
Hospitals are amazing too, my brother transferred his care up here from London when he was diagnosed with cancer.

gingerpaleandproud · 10/06/2019 20:58

Cross post @ScoobyCan. Will your ex have contact with the kids?

Soontobe60 · 10/06/2019 20:58

OP, you ,ight not be bothered where you go, but surely your children will want to see their father regularly? Their needs should be your priority now.

Userplusnumbers · 10/06/2019 20:58

Midlands - East or West, lovely little villages around Nottingham for example, countryside, yet close to major cities.

100k under budget!

FrankT · 10/06/2019 21:00

Job wise, TA? Term time only and school hours. Low pay but if you're mortgage free should be ok?

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2019 21:01

Huddersfield for the house
Don’t know about the job

Hopeygoflightly · 10/06/2019 21:01

Belfast, great schools too. Or all of N.i. Actually. My sisters 4 bed,
Massive garden in a lovely bit of Belfast busting with excellent state schools and park, library etc cost £130k...

ScoobyCan · 10/06/2019 21:02

Honestly you are all fabulous and giving me hope - £250k doesn't provide us with more than a shed in this area, so I don't see why I have to make the effort to stay within the reach of the STBXH / DC father, particularly as he chose to move 2hrs away and TOWARDS London.

Preston Bolton Blackburn Chorley Wigan

What hospitals could you be near?

Ellisandra · 10/06/2019 21:02

What are you doing about contact with the children’s father?

ScoobyCan · 10/06/2019 21:04

@Soontobe60 OP, you ,ight not be bothered where you go, but surely your children will want to see their father regularly? Their needs should be your priority now.

Yes. They have ALWAYS been my priority. Sadly not that of their DF.

Ah well if he moved first. How old are the dc? Old enough to be put on a direct train to him?

Low Fell in Gateshead.

costacoffeecup · 10/06/2019 21:05

Stoke

Decormad38 · 10/06/2019 21:06

Just do a search on Rightmove. You must have some idea where you want to be.

ScoobyCan · 10/06/2019 21:06

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz - both DC of primary age, I apparently need to capitalise on my earning potential (and manage their hospital / medical needs) at the same time. Confused

Greentreeviews · 10/06/2019 21:06

You get a lot for your £££ in Doncaster and in the right villages it has a lovely feel and good schools. Also has large hospital for when needed and quick train links into London and other places.

Lots of properties like this one - detached 4 bed close to outstanding & good schools www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-78080450.html

Historydweeb · 10/06/2019 21:06

Hereford was surprisingly good value when I looked a few days back. Very very good prices and not disimilar to rural wales

Upanddownandroundagain · 10/06/2019 21:07

Redditch, Worcestershire. Nice and central, near to Birmingham for children’s hospital if necessary.

Racheyg · 10/06/2019 21:08

@ScoobyCan
Have you thought about Kent? Margate has some nice parts and properties are reasonable.

Big hospital in Margate and some good schools

Grammar Schools and an excellent primary school round the corner from first property. Lovely market town in beautiful surroundings.
