To live in a 4 bed mortgage free for £250k

Where can I find a really good 4 bed for £250k?

Not joking - that's where we are at post divorce. The world is my oyster but ideally I need a great primary, secondary, and a flexible school hours (9-3) job (DC have medical stuff going on so can't manage wraparound childcare). Anywhere?

I managed to get a large 4 bed on the south coast (east of brighton) for not much more than 250k!

I saw a 4 bed in Newhaven come up recently for 220k,

So those houses are there... if you hunt! Both Eastbourne and Brighton hospitals have been great with my not medically uncomplicated kids. Although train to London for Whitechapel hospital can be a bit of a chore.

awomanwhogetsthingsdone · 11/06/2019 19:02

Man, there's some bastard ugly houses being flogged on this thread! OP deserves something a bit nicer imo. Here, OP, how about a period property in Dorset, 4 beds, a pretty garden and sea views . Nearest decent hospital at Southampton, I should think. Might buy it myself if you don't fancy it. Smile

grannieanne · 11/06/2019 19:05

Portland is a fair trek from Soton, I live there :-) Bournemouth is nearer but good luck in the traffic... Nice house though x

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 11/06/2019 19:06

Think a PP has already said but North Staffs or just over the border into some of the cheaper bits of Cheshire. Really accessible for lots of cities while being quite rural feeling in small towns with good schools.

If you really can go anywhere in the UK I'd look at Dundee as well - lovely small, friendly city and Ninewells Hospital.

Musmerian · 11/06/2019 19:11

Taunton Somerset. Good schools and currently v cheap housing. You can get a 4 bed for that price. Also good hospital and Bristol nearby.

JinglingHellsBells · 11/06/2019 19:12

You can almost buy a whole street in the NE for that.

Seriously, in some of the smaller town and villages outside of Sunderland and Durham you can easily get a 4 or 5 bed modern house for that price.

Tunnocks34 · 11/06/2019 19:16

Manchester. Plenty of places, some lovely where you could get a 4 bed for around 250k

wonderstuff · 11/06/2019 19:16

We've just sold our 3bed for £250K, its in a lovely village between Basingstoke and Andover, an hour from London on the train, 'outstanding' primary feeding into 'outstanding' secondary - it's an ex council terrace on a large estate without a drive and needs some decorative work, I'm sure you could get 4 bed in Basingstoke or Andover if you were happy to get an ex-council place. North Hants Hospital in Basingstoke is good and Southampton is excellent.

Ruby143 · 11/06/2019 19:20

OP do you not have any family or friends -other than ex - that you might want to move closer to? I'm in Newcastle, DS in Nottingham, DD in Leicester, DB in Oxford and until earlier this year DF in Shrewsbury Shropshire which I agree is lovely x

yummytummy · 11/06/2019 19:20

op why do you need 4 bedrooms? does it have to be 4?

Chickoletta · 11/06/2019 19:31

You can rule out most of Cornwall, sadly.

CruCru · 11/06/2019 19:35

The IoW is a lovely place to live but I wouldn’t want to be here if my children had complicated medical needs. St Mary’s are great at stitching people back together but anything more complicated goes to the mainland. Plus the schools are quite up and down.

Loveislandaddict · 11/06/2019 19:41

Love that Dorset house

ShoshanaBlue · 11/06/2019 19:43

Macclesfield may be an option as I don't think there are any bad schools there and you can get a decent sized house for your money. The problem with a lot of the areas stated in the north are that you may need to access grammar schools (which costs a lot in tutoring) or pay. There is a decent but small hospital.

miranda1511 · 11/06/2019 19:47

South of Scotland. Great houses, low unemployment, good standard of living, free prescriptions, great schools (no SATS), low council tax, I could go on. We live near Kelso, it's beautiful x

Alleycat1 · 11/06/2019 19:55

Portland is mega windy and it is difficult to drive anywhere in the summer season. I believe Shropshire and Lancashire are reasonably priced.

grannieanne · 11/06/2019 19:59

Shropshire is really lovely, my in laws moved from Cornwall to just outside Shrewsbury and beautiful it is too, and no bloody tourists :-)

MaxNormal · 11/06/2019 20:00

Glasgow for sure. Possibly you'd struggle in Edinburgh.

Mondy · 11/06/2019 20:01

Leeds is a great city, fantastic restaurants, nightlife, countryside, has lots of well-paid jobs and excellent hospitals, you can (just) get a 4 bed detached for £250k:

Wales, Scotland, some English places up North.

Elle1234 · 11/06/2019 20:18

I just bough a 4 bed detached for £239k in north yorks, lovely area too

ZenNudist · 11/06/2019 20:25

Much as I love Manchester you have to be more in greater Manchester or on the outskirts to get a 4 bed for £250. Warrington way has good value houses for less. How about Culcheth? My friends live there and its very commutable to Manchester. See also Wigan. I love the places near Haigh hall. How about Chorley? Im Manchester try monton.

I do think the Midlands are a good idea, acces to Birmingham hospitals and not too far to get the dc and dh together.plus easier to travel for sales jobs.

Agree you dont tell STBX get your ducks in a row and go.

Birdsonginthetrees · 11/06/2019 20:29

Haven't RFT but a colleague is moving to Norwich and showed me some amazing houses for £250k. Think there are good jobs around there too.
