What to do with this space?

I've name changed because I don't want this possibly outting picture to be linked to my usual nickname Smile

We are currently decorating through the house. I need advice or opinions on what you'd do with this blank space that's a blocked up fireplace. I can't do anything too drastic (like remove it) because it's a rented property. But it's just such a big blank space that it needs something decorative surely!

Well a fire is the obvious suggestion !

I had a fireplace like that in a rented flat with bookshelves in it.

I'd be tempted to staple gun clear corded fairy lights down and across the board in the middle. With a nice vase or two in the front, preferably with a lovely bunch of flowers in (when budget allows!). Would look nice glowing softly in the evening and the vases/flowers would perk it up the rest of the time.

You can also get a lot of fairly lights now with other decorative bits on so could find something to fit with the general theme of the room too possibly.

How about a fire guard in front of it?
