School shoes dilemma

NC for this.
Dd is 12 and came home on Friday with soaking wet school shoes. I told her to put the in the airing cupboard to dry over the weekend. She didn't and I only discovered them last night. They've been sat on the radiator all night and had the heating on for about 3 hours of that but are still wet. I also put bicarbonate in to absorb the moisture and stench.
Dd claims she can borrow some from school but needs a phone or similar as a deposit HmmShe has a history of ruining or losing clothing and shoes and trainers and is costing me a fortune in replacing them to the point I've refused to replace her expensive trainers as she's lost one of them at her dad's.

I am sick to death of her and her lack of responsibility for items. She's lost or ruined countless things.

She might get a strike or detention for not having her school shoes.i haven't got any spare to give her as she'd lost one and the only ones she has are trainers that are too small from her dad's.

WWYD in this situation?

Give her the wet shoes to wear?

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 10/06/2019 08:14

Hairdryer?

northerngirl2012 · 10/06/2019 08:14

Get her to wear them wet. They’ll dry eventually. Any other alternative shoes?

Bunnybigears · 10/06/2019 08:15

Make her wear the wet shoes

arethereanyleftatall · 10/06/2019 08:15

Send her in in wet shoes.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 10/06/2019 08:16

Send her to school in trainers or similar. She will get a detention but that's a consequence of her not taking care of her belongings. How else is she going to learn?

SarahTancredi · 10/06/2019 08:17

How did they get wet?

Are said shoes suitable for the walk to school? What kind are they. Dms and some of the ankle boots are sometimes weather proof. Might fare better?

Unless she deliberately jumped in a stream or something

IceRebel · 10/06/2019 08:22

How did they get wet, and what would have happened if they had been wet on a Thursday rather than having the weekend to dry?

shoedrama · 10/06/2019 08:27

Good point. She'd had to wear them wet. She has feet that are as impossible as she is and can't wear anything like those mentioned. She got soaked as rained heavily and she walked through a puddle I think Confused

You've had the heating on??? In June?!

Mandaxxx72 · 10/06/2019 08:36

I think I'd give her the option....wear wet school shoes as you did ask her to put them in the airing cupboard. She chose not too! OR wear something else and take the consequence of a detention.
Harsh but needed. Good luck

bridgetreilly · 10/06/2019 08:37

She's plenty old enough to realise that her actions have consequences. In this case, not putting her shoes to dry means she'll have to wear wet shoes.

greenlynx · 10/06/2019 08:38

I had the heating on this morning and over weekend. Yes, it’s June but what? I put the heating on because of temperature not because it’s a certain month of the year.

I would use hairdryer for shoes and then give her spare socks to change at morning break or lunchtime if it’s too bad.

SarahTancredi · 10/06/2019 08:42

Could she not start walking in walking boots or wellies and change when she gets there.

EleanorReally · 10/06/2019 08:45

put them in the oven on low?

HennyPennyHorror · 10/06/2019 08:49

Stuff them with newspaper. This is the first thing you should do with any wet shoe. It absorbs and helps to retain shape.

Change the paper every half an hour.

Thesuniscoming · 10/06/2019 08:49

Trainers

Sayyestothecake · 10/06/2019 08:49

Scrunch up newspapers and put them inside this will help drying.

I’ve had my heating on today, shock horror some places are still cold in June

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 10/06/2019 08:50

If we ever have a ‘shoe problem’ I send ds in trainers along with s note to show any teacher that challenges/asks him. Isn’t that what everyone does?

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 10/06/2019 08:51

What doe she use for Games and PE?

Deafdonkey · 10/06/2019 08:56

@greenlynx I agree, it's crazy to freeze just because it is June!

Hollowvictory · 10/06/2019 08:59

I put the heating on last night. Surely you decide wheth to put heating on based on temperature not month 🙄

minipie · 10/06/2019 08:59

Wear the wet shoes, take spare socks/tights to change into at break (by then the first lot will have soaked up the wet )

shoedrama · 10/06/2019 09:12

She left in trainers whilst I was in the bathroom the little madam otherwise she'd have worn the shoes. No newspapers and I didn't discover them wet until last evenings so too late to go out as LO in bed (single mum). I put the bicarbonate in to absorb the moisture and the heating went on solely for her shoes as I knew she had no others.
She's also gone in wearing bright blue nail polish. I told her not to put it in but she ignored me. Said she'd have to remove it at her dad's which she didn't and we don't have any nail polish remover as she's used it all so she'll be in trouble for that too.

We had the heating on yesterday too - actually it comes on automatically when it drops below a certain temperature - so it must be chilly!
