When your 1 year old likes olives

NC in case she's on here

Scrolling through the dreaded Facebook and one of my "friends" has added a picture of her kid eating a plate of salad, olives , pitta etc. with the caption, "When your 1 year old likes olives 🙌.

It really grates on me, like some weird form of mum shaming. We've just got past the stage of her doing the "13 month old" thing. She's one Hmm and so now it's this hand clappy, look at me shite. (I know, I just need to unfollow)

In the comments some people are like, wow, mine won't even try (probably feeling a bit shit that little George will only eat quavers now), and her reply is, really? We're just introducing coriander and feta Hmm

AIBU to think this mum is just intent on shaming other mums and thinks she's superior cause her kid eats olives?

My 8 month old loves olives and stuffed vine leaves and anything really. My 6 year old was the same at that age BUT then between the ages of 2 and 4 pretty much would only eat fish fingers and peas so I wouldn't be so cocky if I was her! Luckily I never did the social media brag Grin

Owlbert · 09/06/2019 15:20

And I'm sure my youngest's palate will change at some point!

neversleepagain · 09/06/2019 15:23

My dc have eaten olives from tiny, they still do now at almost 7. Is this something to brag about? I missed the memo!

neversleepagain · 09/06/2019 15:24

We're from the Mediterranean so olives are like eating grapes.

TheFastandCurious · 09/06/2019 15:26

Pop over to the Facebook page ‘sanctimummy’ OP. Everyone ‘gets it’ there.

howwudufeel · 09/06/2019 15:27

My DN went to a school friend’s house for tea and the mother served moules. I have no doubt she expected DN to pull her nose up at them and ask for something else to eat but DN happily tucked into them.

Miljah · 09/06/2019 15:27

Both mine liked strong flavours as babies, but I would never have plastered that on SM had it existed back then!

Fellow mums would complement me when we were out sharing picnics, but I always said it was 'luck' that they weren't fussy or two-food eaters, not much I'd done (other than introducing variety).

However, it was a revelation helping at Cub and Scout camps how many 12 year olds would only eat plain pasta with a dollop of tomato sauce on it!

I also have friends whose older teenagers will only eat Waitrose 🙄

Billben · 09/06/2019 15:28

My eldest was 10mths and barely walking when we found her helping herself to a crockpot of sauerkraut😀 She has loved olives from more or less the same age. At the age of 12 she doesn’t eat any kinda pasta sauce and can’t stand butter😂

FlutterShite · 09/06/2019 15:29

Let her enjoy it while she can. She'll look back at those posts and chuckle to herself in another year or so when her child will only eat Peppa Pig pasta shapes straight from the tin.

TheFastandCurious · 09/06/2019 15:30

Sorry that should be ‘sanctimommy’ Facebook page.

MaximusHeadroom · 09/06/2019 15:30

My DC1 loves olives, feta and chorizo and did so from an early age.

Until he was about 2 and a half he ate absolutely anything and I was secretly pretty smug. Sadly 7 years later he is the fussiest kid in the world and although he still eats olives, they are now the closest thing to a vegetable he will eat.

I would much rather he ate bloody broccoli and carrots. like DC2 and DC3 Grin

HollowTalk · 09/06/2019 15:31

Oh god, I'm so glad social media wasn't around when my kids were little. There was one woman at the school gates that must really wish it had been around, though. She kept a running record of the reading books everyone in the class was on - until they caught up with her daughter, of course.

Quintella · 09/06/2019 15:33

I think parents find that kind of thing so noteworthy in their own child is because olives were still a niche and posh food when they themselves were young. Same with hummus and brioche. Bog standard foodstuffs these days but people always post about them on 'funny things my kid says' threads, 'mummy, can I have some brioche' etc.

pepperpot99 · 09/06/2019 15:35

What's your beef, OP? my dd was into olives and all kinds at that age. Marginally better than salivating over fast food I'd say.

What do you suppose the majority of folk are going to do with their facebook accounts? campaign for Syrian refugees or to help prisoners learn to read? is that what you do? Hmm. People upload their daily trivial stuff, you know, pics of their dc eating - rather like your friend. Stop being so sanctimonious.

Hm, aren't olives and feta a bit salty for babies? I thought they were supposed to have low salt food? Probably nothing to be smug about!

BertieBotts · 09/06/2019 15:43

I'd share a pic of a baby eating olives on FB, because it's a funny thing for a baby to eat. Generally my friends are interested in baby updates, otherwise they wouldn't be friends? People are free to unfollow if they find my FB feed boring.

User7429001 · 09/06/2019 15:49

I have a lovely video of d's eating avocado as a 6year old he won't touch avocado ! It will come back to haunt her

myfingersarenotsogreen · 09/06/2019 15:53

ridiculous, just bear in mind that 1 year olds are often quite adventurous... just wait until her little darling hits 18 months!

bigwow · 09/06/2019 15:58

She's already past 18 months. It was "when your 20 month old..." the other week Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/06/2019 15:59

Just reply and say - that’s a lot of salt for a one year old

That was what I was thinking.

Sundancer77 · 09/06/2019 15:59

Oh shit 🙈 I’m really hoping I’m not one of ‘Those’ mums without realising 🙄 I have posted a video of dd eating olives, mainly because the faces she made were hilarious and also because I hate olives 🤷‍♀️I’m a first time mum and never considered all the etiquette and rules with being a Mum. I’m cringing now about my food posts (not Fb but in ig) and general excited (but most likely annoying) mum posts 😬

FrownPrincess · 09/06/2019 15:59

I’d reply with great concern about the large amount of salt in the child’s diet ...

ZenNudist · 09/06/2019 16:02

She might not have thought it was bragging. Most dc I know love olives from a young age so no one would consider it a brag.

Nameisthegame · 09/06/2019 16:08

My cat loves olives how fancy boho does that make me?
