Although Dan couldn't have come up with that airport stuff in a million years!

If in doubt, blame the rain.
"When asked on Friday about the glaring mistake, Trump blamed the rain for supposedly knocking out the teleprompter that he was reading from.

“When you’re standing in front of millions and millions of people on television, and I don’t know what the final count was, but that went all the way back to the Washington Monument,” he told reporters on the White House lawn. “And I guess the rain knocked out the teleprompter, but I knew the speech very well, so I was able to do it without a teleprompter.”

It remains unclear why, if the president knew his prepared speech “very well,” he said there were airports during the Revolutionary War."

That picture made me give a nice big guffaw.

He really talks in circles, doesn't he? He talks in a way that by the time he's done he's stated his own position as well as some off the cuff statement regarding the other side ("My position is XX, but some people say YY, who knows if they're right? But it's XX") so that when his initial position is proved incorrect, he can say "But I didn't say XX, I said YY".

Across, that's exactly what he does. Something for everyone in his rambles. Each listener comes away thinking "He agrees with ME."

Even when that's not quite what he said.

I noticed Boris Johnson doing it a while back, too.

(I don't know if it's Johnson's native style or not. There was certainly one occasion when it really struck me, which I've now realised was shortly after Johnson's alleged close discussions with Steve Bannon. Make of that what you will.)

Laura ingraham’s stretch (this only works if you forget about the “manned the air” part”:

@IngrahamAngle
Ooooh! You got him! Obv he meant “ports.” Crucify him. “Trump mistakenly claims Revolutionary War soldiers 'took over airports' in 'Salute to America' speech”

PerkingFaintly · 06/07/2019 09:58

Heh.

When he was first elected, I noticed that much of the media attempted to give him the benefit of the doubt and raise him to the dignity of the office by adding improving translations.

"What the president really meant to say was..."

My perception is a lot have now stopped trying. So it's sweet to see lil' Laura still plugging away as a Trump translator.

Sorry honey, can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear...

Oh brother! His ego is getting so huge I'm feeling the blasts of hot air all the way over here on the 'Left Coast'.

It's becoming ever more obvious why we shouldn't ever have a 'businessperson' (and I use the term loosely for Scrotus) as president.

1-Don't like a court decision about what you want to do? Fuck 'em, do what you want anyway by finding a loophole (or creating one). Pretty common practice in huge corporations; change a name, hide facts, rebrand a product. Do the same thing, but in a different way.

2-Bigging yourself up is usually a good business strategy, confident CEO= more shareholders. But for a political leader it just comes off as crass and offensive. Teddy Roosevelt said "Speak softly and carry a big stick" not "Throw your ego around like a chimp throwing shit, people will think you're great!"

3-Using business practices to hire and fire staff. Don't like the fact that your accountant is telling you they won't cook the books? Fuck 'em, hire a different one and keep on hiring/firing until you find one that will go along with your cheating. But career 'bureaucrats' and diplomats have a wealth of experience and (generally) scruples that cannot be found anywhere but in the public sector and replacing them with your cronies is a recipe for disaster for the Country (as we are seeing).

Shareholders only care that their dividends are big and paid promptly. Citizens demand and expect much, much more from their government. Or at least, they certainly should!

I'd be interested to know whether there's an increase in babies called Sidney or Runyan. Smile

Or Tom/Thomas. Let's not be too restrictive.Grin

Thinking of you California folks with these earth tremors.

Also just seen the news on the other side of the country of injuries at a shopping mall after an explosion. Cause not yet known – there are ruptured gas mains but I imagine that could be either cause or effect.

Whatever the cause, I hope the impact isn't too serious.

Thanks for the link, Perking.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/07/2019 21:02

There was also an explosion in a dorm at University of Nevada Reno. Luckily, no one was killed. They're saying it was a 'utilities issue', so another gas explosion.

My cousin felt both earthquakes and she's quite a distance from Ridgecrest. She said her house shook with the first one, but the second one was a 'roller'. Seizmologists have said this may not be the end of them quite yet.

This has been a crazy few days. Now, if I was a certain type of the US populace, I'd say it's 'God's punishment' for electing Scrotus. After all, that's what they said about having Obama in the WH whenever there was a disaster.

I’ve experienced an earthquake - a sizeable ‘roller’ - and I’d rate that as one of the oddest experiences of my life. You simply don’t expect the earth to behave that way and when it does, everything changes. I can’t quite explain it.

On Epstein, this thread unrolled is really worth reading. @malinablue has gone to a lot of trouble with her research.

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1147677291625033728.html

'Every time I think of Epstein case, my mind goes to this article about Soviets running pedophile rings in the West to obtain kompromat on politicians & businessmen. Epstein allegedly had cameras in every room where he hosted Trump & others at his parties'

We have a bit of everything in here.... Robert Maxwell, a British MP, Trump (obviously), and Prince Andrew might be choking on his poached eggs this morning....

Thanks Roussette.
