What phrases are so annoying you want to scream argh!

A woman I know from evening class has two really annoying phrases. So much so I really want to say Argh very loudly 😠! All of her conversations are full of 'you know what I mean' and 'gobsmacked' and I sometimes wonder if she has any idea how many times she says these words during a 15 minute chat! I'm sure she would be gobsmacked if she counted! Joking aside though, we all look forward to hearing her entertaining stories about everyday stuff told with such dramatic fashion every week! So tell me about someone you know who has some really annoying phrases!

Oh yes the smug condescending "educate yourself". that really is not very pleasant and is annoyingly rude

TooManyPaws · 09/06/2019 14:37

Perhaps a more personal one that I've never seen or heard elsewhere is "every picture tells a story". My great aunt used to say it whenever anyone made a sound when getting up etc and I really wanted to scream every time. Then after she died my dad started saying it. 🤬 Even writing it is annoying.

bewilderedhedgehog · 09/06/2019 14:52

I have just seen worlybear has included "at this moment in time". Thank you I hate this - particularly when repeated multiple times in the same discussion.

Also not keen on "going forwards", "touchpoints", "reaching out" or even worse "reach out and connect"

Helendee · 09/06/2019 17:48

I/he/she/we/they turned around and said...
Why the hell do people have to turn around before making conversation!! ? Grrrrrr.

Every cloud has a silver lining......

I see no silver lining in my current circumstances ..... young kids, no money, being meticulous about what money is spent on etc

morallybankruptme · 10/06/2019 00:15

I meant every grey cloud has a silver lining

Gifted (as in giving someone something)

What’s wrong with GAVE?

LaLaLamp · 10/06/2019 00:32

Hey-ho. Sets my teeth on edge.

Get a visual.

hello darling. Seriously?

Tangofandango · 10/06/2019 08:48

TooManyPaws "Every picture tells a story" is a very old saying. Rod Stewart even had an album with that name in 1971.

... and she turned around and said ...
Even worse is "...and she turnt around and said..."

Im so fed up of it. No, you're so fed up with it.

Boils my piss/blood/guts. Vile expression only ever seen on MN

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 10/06/2019 09:39

'The proof is in the pudding' No it isn't.

BillGiggeloe · 10/06/2019 10:53

I always bring this one up but there seems to be a trend of people these days (especially on TV) using "Generally" instead of "Genuinely" and it drives me mad.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 10/06/2019 11:27

Ya know what...? Usually precedes an utterly banal or meaningless observation.

'Advanced' to describe an average to bright, lively but otherwise entirely normal child. Used by the kind of parent obsessed with reading scheme grades and SATs.

Mumwotdrums · 10/06/2019 20:37

"No offense, but..."

Which means it WILL be offensive! 😠

BlueJava · 10/06/2019 21:32

"Since God's dog was a pup" said frequently by a woman at work if something has happened for ages.

PopcornZoo · 10/06/2019 21:34

"Surgeries", when they mean operations.

PopcornZoo · 10/06/2019 21:48

"Bathrooms" when they mean public TOILETS.

I know. My great aunt was very old. I was around in 1971. It's still fucking annoying every time someone stands up as far as I'm concerned.

whatscuterthanasleepingbaby · 10/06/2019 22:33

“This one” on Facebook. Wishing this one an amazing birthday. Great dinner tonight with this one. Etc.

Historydweeb · 10/06/2019 22:33

"What a treat"
It just sounds sarcastic

whatscuterthanasleepingbaby · 10/06/2019 22:34

I went to the shop and brought some apples

Noodledoodledoo · 10/06/2019 22:36

Reaching out

Having been on a journey (x-factor, strictly style)

both make me have the rage!

CruCru · 10/06/2019 23:29

A few of my old colleagues used to say “ He’s just throwing his toys out the pram” which I always found quite rude. We were adult professionals, not tiny children.
