How easy is it to change date of rent?

I've got a new job but having a bit of a financial nightmare with the shortfall in between the date I get paid now and my new job and bills. I think it will be fairly easy to change most bills to the date I get paid so I don't have a massive overlap for a few months, but I'm thinking with rent I don't know why but I'm thinking it might be a bit harder. I rent through an estate agents (very good and helpful I might add). Its worth a try isn't it?

I don't understand. Do you mean that you are short of money and won't be able to pay the rent on time this month? Changing the date won't help that, will it?

Or do you mean the rent is due (say) two weeks after you get paid each month? If you are afraid you will be tempted to spend the money, you could just pay the rent early every month, as soon as you get paid. Set up a standing order. I'm sure your landlord wouldn't mind having the money early each month!

Changing the date when the rent is actually due would be a hassle. You'd need a new contract.

Speak to your landlord or estate agent. Say that you will now be getting paid on X date each month and therefore you want to pay your rent the day (or two) after. It really isn't an uncommon scenario.

We did this when OH got a new job, landlord was fine about it.

Surely the answer is it depends.

With one landlord it will be easy and with another it will be impossible.

kaytee87 · 08/06/2019 07:09

Do you mean you want to put it back as you won't have the money on time this month? In that case you would essentially be getting that time for free so I doubt they will do it.

Speak to the estate agent. I suggest that if the date is being moved back by say a week, you offer to pay the one week as a one-off.

Weve done it. Needed to change it to a week later for exactly the same reason. We just paid 5 weeks worth the month we changed the date. Landlord was fine about it. Just ring them and ask

As a LL, I would no issue with this request at all, that is if your intention is to pay later from that month, you pay the difference il until then in your payment for the previous month.

AgentJohnson · 08/06/2019 07:21

I’ve recently moved and had the choice of paying the last day of the month or on the 25. I usually get paid by the 25th but I thought it was cutting it too fine and opted for the last day. It sounds like the OP has the reverse problem of being paid later than her rent is due.

All you can do OP is ask but be prepared for your landlord having the same issues as you do now.

It may well depend on your landlords finances. We had one landlord who asked us to change the date a few times as the day she got paid on changed and she needed the money by a certain date each month to pay other bills. For us it didn’t matter when we paid but her finances were on something of a tightrope.

AgentJohnson · 08/06/2019 07:23

I feel your pain and thank goodness I have a buffer that would just about cover these issues.
