To ask what hairdresser tipping etiquette is now in the UK?

I haven't been to a hairdresser in the UK for so long, just booked at appointment for tomorrow - do you still tip and if so how much, do you tip the junior as well as the stylist etc etc?

Depends if I have change or not. If I do I just give a couple of quid. If not, I give nothing

lhastingsmua · 07/06/2019 17:20

I don’t think tips are expected at larger salon franchises eg Toni and guy and equivalents

Zampa · 07/06/2019 17:20

I try and go for 10% or so, rounded to the nearest £5. I often forget to take cash though so sometimes have to slope off ...

Pipandmum · 07/06/2019 17:21

I tip the girl washing my hair a couple quid and the stylist about 10%. I think tips always appreciated it’s not a high paying job!

thegrumpallo · 07/06/2019 17:23

£49 for my cut (v short hair); no styling required= no tip.

isabellerossignol · 07/06/2019 17:24

I don't think tipping is the norm at all. Most hairdressers round here are self employed and rent a chair in the salon, so they are setting their own prices. I think it's a bit odd to tip self employed people.

daisychain01 · 07/06/2019 17:26

£2 to my hairdresser (who owns the salon) and £1 for the person who washes my hair (different almost every time as some of them are apprentices.)

If I take my DM with me for a treat then I tend to give £5 for both of us (it gets shared out very fairly)

Sparklesocks · 07/06/2019 17:27

My cut costs £38 so I found it up to £40

Sparklesocks · 07/06/2019 17:27

*round

redbedheadd · 07/06/2019 17:33

I tip the salon juniors when I did that job I made 30 quid for an 8 hour shift with no breaks so I always try to remember a couple quid now for them.

contentedsoul · 07/06/2019 17:34

Well considering its almost always cash (mens barbers) I doubt much of it ever makes it into the books...hence I find it deeply annoying I'm expected to offer even more free money...hence I don't !!

SerenDippitty · 07/06/2019 17:37

I give my stylist a tenner and couple of quid for the shampooer.

cccameron · 07/06/2019 17:48

10% and yes it is the norm.

Millie2018 · 07/06/2019 17:48

If I’m pleased with it I tip. If not I don’t.

CallMeRachel · 07/06/2019 17:54

No I don't tip. You pay for the goods and services received, end of imo.

I earn far less than they do.

However, if I had a great relationship with a regular hairdresser I would gift them at Christmas.

Personally I think tipping is quite demeaning.

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 07/06/2019 17:58

I don’t but I see other people at my salon do. My haircut costs £75. A tip on top of that and I wouldn’t be able to afford it. (Barely can anyway )

CitadelsofScience · 07/06/2019 18:00

I don't tip, we don't go in to a shop and tip the person on minimum wage on the checkout, so I made the choice not to tip anyone.

PissOffPeppa · 07/06/2019 18:01

I always tip my hairdresser but I’m not sure it’s expected. He is amazing though and will really go out of his way to help me if I need a last-minute appointment/ have a hair emergency. I’m not sure if that’s just the way he is or if it’s because he knows he’ll get a tip out of it, but either way, it works for me.

Chouetted · 07/06/2019 18:02

I've never tipped a hairdresser in my life. I cut my own hair now, but before then I just paid whatever the hairdresser charged me at the till. What's the point of setting a price for a trim if I have to pay 10-20% over and above?

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 07/06/2019 18:02

Mine doesn't expect tips but they have a communal pot on the counter for everyone who works there. I usually drop a £1 or £2 coin in there.

They have staff treats with the tips and someone will get sent out for a bacon sarnie or cake run Grin

Beautiful3 · 07/06/2019 18:27

I used to tip just a pound but stopped as I now pay £75 for my hair. It's too much as it is.

LeilaDarling · 07/06/2019 18:29

£5 for the girl that puts my colour on.

19lottie82 · 07/06/2019 18:35

I tip the junior who washes my hair and gets me a cup of coffee.

Mominatrix · 07/06/2019 18:44

15% to the hairdresser - habit of being American!

Snog · 07/06/2019 18:51

£10 to stylist £5 to junior
