To ask what hairdresser tipping etiquette is now in the UK?

I haven't been to a hairdresser in the UK for so long, just booked at appointment for tomorrow - do you still tip and if so how much, do you tip the junior as well as the stylist etc etc?

@isabella
Really? How odd, tipping taxis is very much a thing. You must know a lot of tight fisted folk 🙄

What, everyone I know is tight fisted? All my family, all my friends, all my colleagues?

Or here's a more likely explanation. It's not a thing where I live. Hmm

MagicKingdom · 07/06/2019 22:20

Worked in a salon for a few years before maternity leave and usually £1/2 for the junior and £3+ for stylist. (I'm a beauty therapist and used to do a few reception shifts.)

derxa · 07/06/2019 22:21

£10 to the juniors every time. I love my hairdressers.

Pinkprincess1978 · 07/06/2019 22:26

Nope, I rarely tip at hairdressers and was never a regular tipper even before NMW.

Most of my hairdressers in recent years have been mobile stylists so set their own price and dare I say it, are paid in cash so who knows how much has deductions made on it?

Zampa · 07/06/2019 22:31

I think that tipping taxi drivers might be a regional thing. I certainly always do in London but whilst out of town I've met with differing attitudes.

Hahaha88 · 07/06/2019 22:38

My hairdresser's paid minimum wage. I always tip her a couple of quid

Cruelstepmother · 07/06/2019 22:38

I'm gobsmacked that people are paying £75 or even £150 to get their hair done! I think last time mine was about £25, and that was quite pricey... it could definitely do with a trim after all these years, but I would rather hand my DH a pair of scissors and say 'Do your best' than pay £150!!!

Cruelstepmother · 07/06/2019 22:41

I remember my hairdresser back then was a bit creepy with serious delusions of grandeur... he handed me a printed card and said, "Would you care to select from the beverage menu?" instead of "Wanna cup of tea, love?"

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/06/2019 22:41

I tip approx 10% i.e. £20. I just hand it over to my hairdresser (actually he's the salon co-owner) or the receptionist and it goes in a communal pot (I think it pays for the staff drinks after their shift). All the other staff are employees (so no self-employed/chairs being rented out).

This is a London West End salon where I've been going since my hairdresser opened it (and was seeing him for years before then when he worked elsewhere at another big name salon). I trust him with my life. Smile My colourists have changed over the years but I've been seeing my hairdresser for almost 30 years now. We have literally grown up together.

Icey4 · 07/06/2019 22:46

My first time getting highlights & a trim at a Salon in the UK I tipped £20. Honestly it was the best colour and blow dry I have ever had in my life. Also, the stylist wasn't chatty, he said he likes to be quiet and concentrate while he does his work so I got to sip tea and read magazines in peace (priceless!!). Back in US I would usually tip 10% but often it ended up being less bc I was usually disappointed with my hair.

Teddybear45 · 07/06/2019 22:48

Tipping is definitely not the norm in the UK as the service charge is often included in the cost of everything.

Peakypolly · 07/06/2019 22:58

I tip hairdresser approximately 10% and I always tip a satisfactory cab driver anywhere in the UK.
Weird how we all inhabit the same place and operate so differently.

babysharkah · 07/06/2019 23:03

I've never tipped. I pay a bloody fortune anyway, why would I tip?!

Chouetted · 08/06/2019 01:28

I thought tipping taxis was mostly because, unlike shops, they don't carry large amounts of loose change, hence "keep the change". I've never calculated a percentage, I just round it up to whatever seems most appropriate.

I do tip them for very heavy luggage or if they've been unusually helpful.

Redglitter · 08/06/2019 01:40

I dont tip my hairdresser. She comes to the house so I wash my own hair, she uses my electricity and i sweep up when shes gone.

Jammysod · 08/06/2019 07:18

I really don't understand the tipping thing...
I wouldn't tip the supermarket checkout person or someone dealing with my query at the bank, so why would I tip my hairdresser? All have provided a service I've paid for in one way or another.
I certainly don't get tips in my office job, but provide customers with assistance everyday.

If I've paid £40 for my hair to by done, I don't expect to pay more on top of that.

kaytee87 · 08/06/2019 07:20

I don't tip my stylist anymore as she owns her own salon and her prices have gone up (still reasonable). I tip the junior instead

BillywilliamV · 08/06/2019 07:30

10% in restaurants
£3 to £5 in taxis, dependent on fare
£40 in Christmas Card to cleaner annually

£25 in Christmas Card to hairdresser annually, but I have been going to her for 10 years. I also tip her a fair whack when she cuts DDs’ hair as she refuses to ask more than she did 10 years ago and they have grown up hair now.

adaline · 08/06/2019 07:46

I don't tip anyone.

But I got lambasted on here for saying that last time!

I don't believe some jobs deserve tips and others don't. Lots of jobs are lower paid and much more hard work than hairdressing and those people don't get a penny in tips.

Awrite · 08/06/2019 07:55

Don't hairdressers get taxed on their tips? Or, on the assumption of tips. So, not tipping costs them?

I usually give £10.

I only go every 3/4 months.

RingtheBells · 08/06/2019 08:51

With taxis I would round it up if paying cash, taxis must have card machines now though? I haven't used one in years. If I was paying by card I wouldn't add extra on though for a tip. I have never tipped hairdressers.

RingtheBells · 08/06/2019 08:52

I wonder if less people tip nowadays as most payments are made by card or phone and there isn't the rounding up element and the "keep the change"

Petitprince · 08/06/2019 09:27

Small salon and the stylist washes my hair as well as cutting and colouring. I always give her £5 in cash although I pay the rest by card.

Rezie · 08/06/2019 09:31

I don't tip. If they want extra money then they should add it to.the price of the haircut. I really don't think tipping culture should be normalised. It should only be reserved to service that is beyond their job description. I've yet to receive that in an UK hairdresser.
