To ask what hairdresser tipping etiquette is now in the UK?

I haven't been to a hairdresser in the UK for so long, just booked at appointment for tomorrow - do you still tip and if so how much, do you tip the junior as well as the stylist etc etc?

Nothing for the stylist as he's the boss. a fiver for the girl who does my colour if she does a good job. I hate tipping, but it seems expected. People should be paid a good rate if they do a good job and sacked if they don't.

Elphame · 07/06/2019 18:54

As I pay my hairdresser close on £200 every 8 weeks I'm definitely not adding a tip!

SinglePringle · 07/06/2019 18:57

£10 to colourist, same to stylist, £5 to junior. Every time.

Lyricallie · 07/06/2019 19:02

My wee sister is a hair dresser is just now out on the floor so although she'll be bringing in £100s(ish) a day for the hair dressers I think she's on £8 an hour (she's just qualified) so they definitely don't all rent their chairs. She gets a mix but when she was an apprentice and doing all the hair washing a £1 or 2 was definitely appreciated as apprentices can be on about £3.50ph (although this changes as they work longer).

Now she seems to get a mix a £1 here or there and she got £5 the other day as she was over the moon. She's been telling me male students tip the best hah.

I personally would just round up to the nearest £10 within reason. Then a £1 or 2 to the apprentice.

BrilliantYou · 07/06/2019 19:03

Usually costs me £60 and I stick £3 in tip jar

starzig · 07/06/2019 19:03

I do 10%

sheshootssheimplores · 07/06/2019 19:05

Nope I don’t tip.

lhastingsmua · 07/06/2019 21:09

Haha this thread is making me feel tight as I never tip. But I go to a large salon franchise and pay high enough prices (eg £150 for balayage not including cut or blow dry) so don’t feel the need to! Perhaps it would be different if I went to a small business

gamerwidow · 07/06/2019 21:10

I do 10% too.

gamerwidow · 07/06/2019 21:11

p.s. My hairdresser comes to my house and I have to wash my hair myself and I still tip.

mamalovebird · 07/06/2019 21:13

I don't tip my hairdresser, feels a bit weird, but I do buy her a bottle of fizz and some chocs at xmas.

Notthetoothfairy · 07/06/2019 21:13

£5 for the stylist (so approx 10%) and £2 junior

Oysterbabe · 07/06/2019 21:15

£54 for a trim = no tip from me.

RingtheBells · 07/06/2019 21:21

I have never tipped at hairdressers, I just pay by card the amount it is like in shops.

LakieLady · 07/06/2019 21:22

I tip mine 10%. She's fab though. When she was on maternity leave, I went to her house for my cut and colour!

In all my 63 years, I've only really been happy with 3 hairdressers. She's been doing my hair for 26 years, we worked out the other day. I dread the thought of her moving away and having to find someone else who can get the hang of my very thick, unruly, wavy hair.

I've told her that when I retire to Cornwall, she's got to move down with me, or I'll fly her down for the day every few weeks if she refuses to move.

TheInebriati · 07/06/2019 21:24

Yes but how do you know? Is it ok to ask? I need to get a haircut soon, I usually DIY. Blush

JaceLancs · 07/06/2019 21:25

I never tip my hairdresser - she always also washes my hair etc
However I always buy her a generous gift voucher at Xmas - gave her money to buy stuff when she had DS etc

MarniLou · 07/06/2019 21:31

Never and have never considered it or known it is the thing to do. Always pay by card so just don't offer any extra. My hairdresser is lovely, never seemed an issue.

80sMum · 07/06/2019 21:34

I haven't tipped a hairdresser since the 1980s! I haven't seen any evidence of anyone else tipping either. Most people pay by card now - and since it's well over £100 each time, I expect people don't feel inclined to tip. I certainly don't!

Cryalot2 · 07/06/2019 21:40

I use a small local hair dresser (family run)
Adult daughter and I both tip regularly.
We get amazing service, they open early if you have a wedding or similar and the costs are reasonable.
I honestly think it depends on area, and if a branch or independent . A good hair dresser is a gem .

Biancadelrioisback · 07/06/2019 21:41

...people tip hairdresser's??!!

janetforpresident · 07/06/2019 21:51

I do 10% I just factor it in to the cost and often get a wet cut so I can afford the tip!Smile

julensaor · 07/06/2019 21:56

charged 160 euros for a colour recently (no cut) blow-dry (didn't want), feck the tip. 80 euros per hour for a hairdresser, nice.

Bookworm4 · 07/06/2019 21:56

I think it's a bit odd to tip self employed people
What an odd thing to say?
Do you never tip a taxi driver?
Self employed people have a lot of overheads and people often expect low prices or haggle.
Everyone I know tips the junior a few £ as they are low paid.

isabellerossignol · 07/06/2019 21:59

No, never. I had never heard of tipping taxi drivers until I read about it on Mumsnet. When I asked around other people to see if it was something they did, they all looked at me like Confused

Self employed people have overheads of course but they set their own prices, therefore it's very strange to tip them.
