Bathroom towels. Aibu?

How does everyone handle bathroom towels? Does everyone in family have their own towel? Or do you all share whatever towels are in the bathroom?

2 bathrooms 6 people. All towels kept in basket on communal landing. Everyone takes a clean towel and showers. DH showers twice a day so will use his and hang in the bathroom, changes every 2/3 days. Small children share a towel after baths, put straight in wash.
Myself 3 towels used 2-3 times then washed. Adult sons who knows, they take a clean one when needed. About 20 towels in stack to share.
Hand towels on rack in each bathroom changed daily. If you want a clean one just take it.
Flannels are used once then washed. Can get through 15 flannels easily in a day. Kept on a shelf in the bathroom, continuous supply.

Share towels. No idea how often they get washed (DH does the laundry).

Sockworkshop · 08/06/2019 07:44

Bat
Its drying yourself on a towel covered with someone elses skin bacteria and skin cells plus the boys do the vigorous bum/ balls drying Grin .
No thanks !
Everyone just gets on with it here and its actually stopped towel dumping as we all know who the culprit is!

Too I have washable face pads ,mine are sewn, they go in with my towels in a net bag. Brilliant !

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2019 08:31

My face clothes are actually from b and q and are wrongly inexplicably labelled as ‘multi diy cleaning clothes’ - perfect size, thin and soft and take repeated hot washes well. Grin

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2019 08:32

Or possibly Homebase - can never distinguish the two and think one no longer exists ???

blackcat2345 · 08/06/2019 08:55

Where do you hang the towel to dry If the bathroom is tiny and no banister - bungalow.

TapasForTwo · 08/06/2019 09:50

Buy some radiator racks like these and hang the towels on them. You don't need to have the heating on if you allow the air to get to the towels

Bathroom towels. Aibu?

Can't believe how often some people change bath towels!

You do know you're clean when you dry yourselves, yes?

We have our own bath and hand/face towel. Different hand towel for visitors

Bear in mind I grew up with one shared towel which was washed weekly (and we only bathed once a week (50s)

ASauvignonADay · 08/06/2019 10:22

Share but washed/changed regularly

Fairylea · 08/06/2019 10:25

We all share but we wash them after each use. So every time we have a shower we get a fresh one from the cupboard. Wasteful probably but our house is very old a damp and nothing dries between uses so it’s easy to just chuck them in the washer dryer.

vdbfamily · 08/06/2019 10:34

We have a pile of towels and people help themselves and put in wash when they feel they need a fresh one. I usually have my own but if I fail to notice it is not in bathroom will just use DH's instead.

TapasForTwo · 08/06/2019 12:25

We never share bath towels. I think that is a bit minging.

JonnyPocketRocket · 08/06/2019 12:36

Urgh, we lived with my PILs for a short time and I realised one day that my MIL was taking my (and presumably other people's) used towels from where they were drying, putting them in the tumble dryer, and back into the cupboard as though they were clean! Envy (not envy)
Fortunately we didn't live with them long. Now we have individual bath towels, washed at 60° every week or so, and shared hand towels changed every other day and washed with the other towels.

HoppingPavlova · 08/06/2019 13:24

So, can I ask where the sharing ends? If you mother in law came over, would she use the share towel? How about a friend? Kid's friends? The dog? Who gets to use the communal towel?

Only our family use the communal towel. Visitors are given their own towel and then after they leave I grumble heavily about having to do extra washing (along with their sheets). Can you tell I’m not a fan of being a slave to the washing machine, I have better things to do with my timeGrin.

No one in our household has ever had a skin condition, if they did then I would definitely rethink the sharing or quarantine them from sharing. Towels have only ever gone in a 30degree wash here.

As I said we have all survived for over 20 years now in this system. I used to work in A&E and never came across a towel sharing emergency. Admittedly I don’t personally know any dermatologists but among colleagues I’ve never heard of anyone who has heard of issues. Not saying there has never been issues arising from towel sharing but if there are they must be pretty rare as I’ve never heard of it.

HoppingPavlova · 08/06/2019 13:25

Sorry, forgot to respond re pets. No, we don’t share our towel with the pets. They get our old cast offs but we do make pets share come pet washing dayGrin. They tend to get sopping wet quickly though due to wet fur/hair so they don’t share as much as we do.

Skyejuly · 08/06/2019 15:37

I have no problem sharing towels!

1CarefulLadyOwner · 08/06/2019 15:56

Family of 5, we each had our own towel and they were washed once a week.

Bloodless · 08/06/2019 15:59

We share towels, washed after every use

tor8181 · 08/06/2019 16:01

toweling bath robe each and 5 towels always there for hair,im the only one with long hair though

poopypants · 08/06/2019 16:05

Julensaor I'm sorry you don't understand the environmental impact of animal farming. But yes, if we all ate a plant based diet, of course the world would be better off. Even most meat eaters understand this. Me for one. Not my job to enlighten you. Go google it. Same with diesel. Sheesh. How are you so proud of your ignorance?

Sockworkshop · 08/06/2019 17:42

Surely if you wash after every use you are not sharing .
Some people mingers actually share ie they use the same towel after another person has used it.

cookiechomper · 08/06/2019 18:54

We share. I'm not bothered about towels that have been on my husband and kids.

Mygoodlygodlingtons · 08/06/2019 19:39

A bit late to the party but...

"Towels are such great bacteria traps because every time you use a towel, you transfer your natural skin bacteria, and any other germs you’re carrying, onto their surface."

"Gerba says he found that nearly 90% of bathroom towels were contaminated with coliform bacteria and about 14% carried E. coli."

"After about two days, if you dry your face on a hand towel, you’re probably getting more E. coli on your face than if you stuck your head in a toilet and flushed it."

"Bacteria can survive regular detergent, according to Gerba, so use hot water and a product with activated oxygen bleach to thoroughly clean towels."

It is minging to share bath towels with other people.

Bibijayne · 08/06/2019 19:40

We just share.

PookieDo · 08/06/2019 19:48

My little niece has that molluscum skin thing that you can catch from towels. She’s got it quite badly and there is no treatment you have to wait for it to go away. If I ever needed another reason not to share towels... google it!
