To ask you to stop flying

We are facing a climate disaster. Our children will have to live through it. And yet I overheard two women today discussing how many holidays abroad they had been on this year. Both over 60 years of age. Obviously it will not directly impact on them.
This is also very common in my social group, people jetting off 4-5 times a year. Mini-breaks, weekends away, European trips, long haul, hen do's, weddings, birthdays. It's unbelievable how much people are burying their heads in the sand.

We need to stop flying. Urgently. Now. My family have not flown in over 5 years. We used to travel a lot, before we realised the consequences. I am putting this here, to make people think, we all need to urgently reduce (ideally stop) flying now.

We rarely fly, last flight for a holiday was 2013 (DH has flown since for work)
We love a road trip and regularly drive all over Europe. We will have to fly to see family soon though when our baby is born as she won't be able to do a series of 12hr days in a car seat like we do.
Once she is bigger though we won't fly.

We have 1 electric car and one ICE but sadly the charging network in Europe not established enough to take the EV, but it will be soon :)

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:55

I find it pretty hysterical to compare not paying people to have children to actually killing people.

But I'm sorry about your situation.

JacquesHammer · 06/06/2019 10:56

At this point I have my eye on the end game and not much else. I sense there's a cataclysm looming and the stuff we're going to have to do to avoid it is going to hurt

Are you aiming for natural selection to significantly reduce the population?

There are currently 4.1 million children living in poverty. How do you think that stat will change if child-related credits are removed?

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 10:57

AT THE MOMENT JET FUEL IS NOT EVEN TAXED!!!!!!!!!!!

But there is air passenger tax. Which should be used for the environment. But doesnt appear to be.

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:57

This is insane and unnecessary. If the cost of air travel actually reflected the damage to the economy, there would be a natural contraction and you could avoid the descent into a planned economy.

Damage to the environment that should read.

Whosorrynow · 06/06/2019 10:57

People get very angry at the idea of not having unfettered access to Airtravel

dottyboxes · 06/06/2019 10:57

People don't seem to understand that ALL our children are screwed and will suffer if we don't do something.

My feminism, my support for abortion rights, my anti brexit views, my anti trans ideology views, my left wing political views - none of these mean diddly squat next to the looming catastrophe that is climate change.

dottyboxes · 06/06/2019 10:59

boggles why are you so far away from your family in the first place?

This comes back to my earlier point. Families are not families anymore. We don't live in proper communities. We see it as our right to flit all over the globe because hey, everything is just a short plane ride away.

Biker47 · 06/06/2019 11:00

Nah. Going to the Maldives this year, should be good, dunno where to go next year though.

dottyboxes · 06/06/2019 11:02

Enjoy it while you can biker, it'll be gone in a decade.

Bumpitybumper · 06/06/2019 11:02

I often think that lots of people that bang on about their green credentials seem to really struggle with accepting that we all need to travel less to make a real difference. The worst offenders are the celebrities or internet influencers who like to travel the world highlighting problems caused by global warming. They obviously justify their travelling as they are raising awareness but i do suspect that many of them, like most other people, would want to travel without the laudable excuse.

The fundamental truths are that lots of people like to travel and it is really damaging our environment. Travelling is therefore a selfish thing to do Like most things, people will continue to pursue their selfish interests until someone stops them. Personally I would be in favour of a policy that would give people to travel less as I think that's the only realistic way we can make a difference.

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 11:02

How is it? If you are willing to let kids live in extreme poverty, why would you be ok with the NHS spending fortunes on keeping people alive that will die in the next 5 years anyway? That keeps population numbers up.

And keeping them comfortable costs fortunes and keeps population numbers up. So to reduce population numbers and save money, people terminally ill would be better off being euthanized, instead of dying in pain.

Or is it just other peoples kids you dont mind starving?

Lifeover · 06/06/2019 11:05

I guess in order to limit kids we could do the following:

Stop child tax credits etc or only provide in respect of the first child then scale back for every subsequent child

Scale back benefits for each child after the first

Social housing limited to 2 bedrooms

New builds limited to 3 bedrooms

Higher sdl/additional tax on properties over 3 beds

New builds smaller with bigger gardens (including trees)

Banning 7 seater cars (and limiting cars to one per household)

Change social attitudes showing 3 kids as being undesirable, including commentary in media like with plastic about the terrible environmental impact having more kids has.

Stop with the cult of fertility measuring a woman’s success by her ability to produce kids

dottyboxes · 06/06/2019 11:06

why would you be ok with the NHS spending fortunes on keeping people alive that will die in the next 5 years anyway

Personally I'm not, I'm hugely in favour of assisted suicide.

SmarmyMrMime · 06/06/2019 11:07

DH flies a lot for work. He has to visit industrial sites and as a consequence of his visit, significant improvements in efficiency including greenhouse gas emissions are made which far outstrip anything we can possibly achieve as a family.

I'm not the best at conserving the planet. I'm not the worst. We time our appliences to make the most of our solar panels. Our garden is small but tries to maximise habitats for wildlife. We home compost a lot of waste. We have two cars, but I try to walk most local journeys and use local community facilities. We use/d washable wipes, CSP and nappies.

I tend to fly every other year. We use a ferry for the annual international family visit. Our other holidays tend to be camping in the UK, reusing equipment until it is beyond repair. When I went travelling in my younger days, it tended to be longer trips featuring multiple places which was more efficient than lots of seperate short hops.

Every change we make has consequences. If I wash a nappy, that changes energy, water and detergent use against the resouce costs of production and disposal. Change has to be made in a way that is sustainable for economies and society to adapt to.

Going green is very grey indeed. That doesn't mean small changes aren't worthwhile, but it's not wise to get all holier than thou about it.

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 11:08

But I'm sorry about your situation.

But you arent. My son is one of those you would see with no home. No food. But he is just someone else kid. Some else sacrifice to make.

So you arent sorry. He would just be a casuality.

As I said population doesnt need to be controlled. Letting kids be the victims in the effort to save us, isnt an option I feel comfortable with.

I would rather everyone did their bit.

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 11:09

Personally I'm not, I'm hugely in favour of assisted suicide.

So am I. But in the situation I am talking about it's not suicide. It's the state killing people who dont have 'worth' in society.

@dottyboxes

You’re so right, I listen to people going on about stuff like Brexit and I just think how can you think that matters, don’t you know what’s about to happen to humanity?!

Whosorrynow · 06/06/2019 11:17

If we limit the amount of children that people can have we will end up with an increasingly ageing and frail population with no young people to help keep them alive

Oh yes that old chestnut. No one is suggesting we stop having children altogether you know.

I agree influencers and celebrities don't help. Like Mod and clemmie Telford etc flitting away on four foreign holidays a year.
