To ask you to stop flying

We are facing a climate disaster. Our children will have to live through it. And yet I overheard two women today discussing how many holidays abroad they had been on this year. Both over 60 years of age. Obviously it will not directly impact on them.
This is also very common in my social group, people jetting off 4-5 times a year. Mini-breaks, weekends away, European trips, long haul, hen do's, weddings, birthdays. It's unbelievable how much people are burying their heads in the sand.

We need to stop flying. Urgently. Now. My family have not flown in over 5 years. We used to travel a lot, before we realised the consequences. I am putting this here, to make people think, we all need to urgently reduce (ideally stop) flying now.

The tax would be higher the richer you were.

So again, people on benefits can have as many as they want? But if you are on a lowish income and work you cant have any, because you cant afford the tax

I do agree population needs control. Definitely. I just dont see how it will work to tax people in today's society.

MsMustDoBetter · 06/06/2019 10:20

Everyone - globally should be given an allowance of air miles, they can use them as they like - either a short haul annually or to save them up for long haul.

It will massively affect he tourist industries in many countries. So it would need to be thought through and planned.

If we took a global approach as a global community the world would work much better and might be able to make a positive change, but I don't see that happening in my lifetime.

dottyboxes · 06/06/2019 10:21

So again, people on benefits can have as many as they want?

Nope, they'd be subject to the tax too!

But I am in favour of higher taxes all round. Not popular I know but there you go.

Judging by the responses on this thread, people don't seem to want to take responsibility for their own carbon footprints so I don't see what other option there is.

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:22

Well, we're currently incentivising people to have children in the UK. With money, of course; tax credits, child benefit and the like.

Incentives matter. This is a problem.

MidniteScribbler · 06/06/2019 10:23

Whenever someone tells us what we should do to 'save the planet', it's always something that has no real impact on their own lives. The OP doesn't really care about flying, so it's easy to tell everyone to give it up. People who say that we should stop driving always live somewhere with good public transport. Telling someone to grow their own veges is always said by someone with a reasonable sized garden. "Save the planet", but not by stopping me doing what I want.

TheAverageJuror · 06/06/2019 10:24

Cutting emmissions by itself is not enough. Many posts in here sound like they think it is.
I will put that point out once again (for it to be ignored i guess).

We need to plant trees and make our cities and towns greener.

Trees and green plants are nature's CO2 filter.
If people lower their emissions, which obviously we all do to some extent, and plant it would have a better effect than JUST lowering the emissions.

So again. Plant green things. Be proactive.

dottyboxes · 06/06/2019 10:25

I live in London and I really don't think that, barring disability, anyone here needs a car. I accept that rurally you do but if it were up to me that would be taken into account when taxing.

We don't have a car, we live in London with a young DC and we use public transport to go everywhere. Yet my neighbour drives her children to school and it is a 15 minute walk. Disgraceful.

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 10:33

Nope, they'd be subject to the tax too!

Ok, so I will ask again. If you are in benefits or low income. Get pregnant, again either in purpose or by accident and regise to get an abortion and can not afford the tax, what will the rules be?

Forced abortion, after being means tested
Prison if you dont pay
Removal of the child upon birth

As I said, I agree that population needs to be controlled. But I dont know how it will work.

JacquesHammer · 06/06/2019 10:33

Judging by the responses on this thread, people don't seem to want to take responsibility for their own carbon footprints so I don't see what other option there is

I'm quite happy to take responsibility for my carbon footprint. Unfortunately it appears the OP wants everyone else to take responsibility for hers too....

Whosorrynow · 06/06/2019 10:34

I think the government should ration flights so everyone has an allowance
I agree and it should be like the allowance you get for ISAs, use it or lose it you can't give it to someone else or roll it over from last year

Lifeover · 06/06/2019 10:36

If we had less kids and less migration, we wouldn’t need to keep building houses, we’ve been looking to move recently and literally every place we’ve looked has massive building sites on the edge of the town/village. Farmland given over to housing. We need to reduce the population

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:38

Ok, so I will ask again. If you are in benefits or low income. Get pregnant, again either in purpose or by accident and regise to get an abortion and can not afford the tax, what will the rules be?

Taxing children seems a bit draconian given that we're actually at the moment handing money out to anyone who has kids.

Eliminating child-related credits seems a like a reasonable middle ground.

Whosorrynow · 06/06/2019 10:42

We need government to legislate to incentivise people to live more sustainable lives, problem is this runs counter the needs of large corporations to maximise profits. All these things could be in theory be addressed by adjusting the incentives...it should be logistically possible for the human race to organise itself more efficiently so as to promote the best outcomes for everyone but we have to deal with the fact that our baser instincts mean we feel that we ought to have our cakes and eat them too

Our generation will be judged very harshly in 100 years (if any humans still exist) for the way our convenience and lifestyle mattered more than the environment notwithstanding we all know what the consequences will be. I include myself in that judgment, and frankly I’ll deserve it.

We are a society containing people who eg won’t wash clothes at 30 because they just don’t come as clean. How will that look to someone in the future who hasn’t even got water to drink, let alone wash clothes and worry about the temperature?

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 10:46

AlaskanOilBaron I agree, again it a point. But we were talking about imposing taxes on those who have kids, extra cars etc.

Removing child related credits has similar problems. In that, it would make kids the reserve of the wealthy. Which may be the only way to do it.

But what about people like me. I had a son. Worked, Dh worked. We stuck at one. Dh then had a breakdown and eventually attacked me. I had to leave the property. I dont an excellent wage. To work full time and support my son, I need tax credits.

I didnt choose to be a single parent, exh didnt choose to have huge mental health issues. But non of that helps me raise my son. Removing Tax credits would mean I couldnt afford my mortgage. I moved to a cheaper area and have a very small mortgage. But i would make ends meet. As it stands, being careful with money means ends just meet. No savings

If someone has 2 kids and then find themseleves in this situation, what would happen?

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:46

Trouble with that is, in a lot of cases (if the parents are poor) it's the children who suffer. And they are innocent.

At this point I have my eye on the end game and not much else. I sense there's a cataclysm looming and the stuff we're going to have to do to avoid it is going to hurt.

Which is why I actually have started screaming at people IRL when they talk about maintaining the current pyramid/pension scheme when confronted with overpopulation.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/06/2019 10:47

Try addressing your comments to the private jet-set. Particularly the ones who pontificate the loudest and longest about climate change and environmental concerns, whilst catching helicopters to attend a 30-minute 'engagement' or fly home for a forgotten pair of shoes.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/06/2019 10:48

I think the government should ration flights so everyone has an allowance

Get lost.

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 10:50

At this point I have my eye on the end game and not much else. I sense there's a cataclysm looming and the stuff we're going to have to do to avoid it is going to hurt.

So should we stop providing end of life care. Or euthenise anyone with life limiting illness. Stop Medical assistance for disabled people? Stop medically treating anyone? Or only treat on their worth to society?

If you are willing to see kids go without the basics, even a home how far does that go?

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 10:53

Infact of we are going to let kids go homeless and starve and let people die, I assume you think we should stop giving charity to thried worl countries and disaster relief. Let natural selection take its course.

When its a choice between the above of the end of the planet. Maybe Thanos' plan for half the population to just disappear was a good one.

BogglesGoggles · 06/06/2019 10:53

Righto-will just take the boat to Australia next time I go to visit my family.

AlaskanOilBaron · 06/06/2019 10:54

I think the government should ration flights so everyone has an allowance

Again, does anyone have an image of the Central Committee sitting around a big table, smoking, drawing up the Flight Schedule when they read this?

This is insane and unnecessary. If the cost of air travel actually reflected the damage to the economy, there would be a natural contraction and you could avoid the descent into a planned economy.

AT THE MOMENT JET FUEL IS NOT EVEN TAXED!!!!!!!!!!!

Holdthedamndoor · 06/06/2019 10:55

BogglesGoggles apparantly you should just move there. As though it's that easy.

Or just never see them again.

But op is fine having 2 cars and planning her 3rd baby. Confused
