To be shocked that so many savoury foods have sugar in them?

I'm trying to give up sugar and artificial sweeteners entirely (other than fresh fruit) in an effort to lose weight and get a bit healthier. I lost about a kilo last week without doing anything else or feeling hungry.

I'm shocked though by how hard it is to find savoury food without sugar (often disguised as dextrose/maltose/glucose syrup etc). I just popped into Sainsbury's wanting to get a sandwich to eat whilst I walked around the park with my napping baby and couldn't find any without sugar. I ended up getting a packet of falafel instead.

I know that food manufacturers pack sugar into loads of processed food nowadays, but I really am a bit startled that it seems to be in like 90% of the savoury products I look at. No wonder I've been struggling with my weight for so long Blush

YANBU, it's everywhere and really unnecessary as well. Tomato sauces like Dolmio etc are absolutely loaded with sugar, as is practically anything that's highly processed. Industrially produced bread is often very high in sugar. Often things that are marketed as low fat contain lots of sugar. And products that are marketed as 'natural' might contain just natural and naturally occurring sugars but it's still sugar!

Unfortunately the only way to avoid all the hidden sugars in everything is to make everything from scratch. And eat plenty of fats and protein to stay satisfied.
