AIBU to be terrified Trump will destroy NHS - and to wonder what to do about it

Just that. I feel really fearful that the NHS will up for grabs in any US/UK trade deal and I have no trust in Trump to protect it. Do you feel the same and what can we do?

OP posts:
Debenhamshandtowel · 04/06/2019 22:13

I do feel the same.
I don’t know what to do.

ThisIsBonIver · 04/06/2019 22:15

It is our government’s job to protect it. Trump or his successors are just going to make as much money as possible, and have already made inroads into our health system if I remember correctly.

ElphabaTheGreen · 04/06/2019 22:17

Nah. Americans can already make bids for NHS contracts as long as they have toe-holds in the EU. Virgin is the main bugger who has started infiltrating the NHS so we’d do as well to watch our shores first.

I don’t think even the stupidest Tories (Paddington Stare at you, Boris) would sell off the NHS wholesale, especially to the Orange Blimp. The nation wouldn’t stand for it.

LizzieSiddal · 04/06/2019 22:17

I’ve just said the same to Dh.

The NHS belongs to us not the Conservative party, it’s not there’s to give away.

I do wonder if this sell off would get through Parliament!

sleepingdragon · 04/06/2019 22:19

As PP said, it's our government's job to protect it. So what you can do is work to help stop Farage or Johnson getting to be Prime Minister or into a position where they can destroy our NHS

endofthelinefinally · 04/06/2019 22:19

Of course he is hoping to take over the NHS. And a lot more besides. I spoke to a couple of senior NHS colleagues today about this. They are watching it all unfold. So much has already been parcelled up and privatised, ready to sell on.
As soon as Brexit happens.
Chlorinated chicken is the least if our worries. However, this is what the majority voted for. Apparently.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 04/06/2019 22:20

Once he's elected, he can do what he likes. And he will, because the English are too polite to riot.

MrPan · 04/06/2019 22:21

It never gets to Parliament. It gets slices up bit by bit as it is currently being. It's really annoying to read " what can we do?".
Don't vote for a fucking brexit party at any time. Brexit is about this shit.

Gin96 · 04/06/2019 22:22

The NHS sale has been on the cards for a while under TTIP deal that the EU was trying to set up with the US

FuckItFuckerArse · 04/06/2019 22:23

Yabu.

He'll finish his wall he won't before he takes down the NHS.

MrPan · 04/06/2019 22:23

Not too polite. Just too ill informed and lazy. And assume govts will do what is best for them.

Or too thick.

MrPan · 04/06/2019 22:26

No Gin. EU has no power or intent for the sale of the NHS.

BrexitBingoGenerator · 04/06/2019 22:39

Well he only just learned what the letters NHS stood for today (Theresa had to explain it for him in the press conference). So his rate of movement on this will be quite slow, I reckon.

Hopefully long enough for someone to do something to rescue us from this shitshow.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/06/2019 22:55

Well there are many private companies involved in the NHS

Do we want more reliable cost effective companies because many that are involved standards are poor

I would rather they were British companies than American

This isn’t anything new just he has a big mouth and he knows what will annoy his critics

Theworldisfullofgs · 04/06/2019 22:59

Brexit innit.

Bakersdelight · 04/06/2019 23:01

Deeply worried too

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/06/2019 23:04

You can write to your MP. If enough people feel the same, then the MP will start worrying about the safety of his seat, and once enough MPs feel like that, they will be putting pressure on the government.

sunglasses123 · 05/06/2019 12:17

Whilst Trump is not the person who needs to the review the UK NHS it does need a review - urgently!

Its not a holy grail. I have spent over 30 years as a supplier to government and the waste and entitlement is shocking. They waste so much money having endless meetings about very little.

In my view we need to stop trying to be PC and support/fund everyone regardless. People need to take responsibility for their own lives being that eating too much, smoking or not bothering to cancel an GP appointment!

Morgan12 · 05/06/2019 12:18

It won't get to parliament. It will be gradually and slowly sold off. It's been happening for years. I'm glad that dicks comments have made people sit up and realise this.

JessieTalamasca · 05/06/2019 12:20

The government has been systematically destroying the NHS for the past nine years and you're worried about Trump? FFS. The government has decimated it already. You wonder what to do about it? Stop voting Tory and for fascist twats like Farage!

And LOL @ British companies being the ones it's being privatised to, parts of it have been siphoned off to foreign countries for years now.

JessieTalamasca · 05/06/2019 12:21

Spot on, Morgan!

TanMateix · 05/06/2019 12:22

It is not Trump who will destroy it but that insistence of Tories and Brexiteers that we are better at freedom to do our own deals. There is not much negotiating when you are small country trying to break a deal with a fully money oriented giant... we will be at the beck and call of the US as soon as we are out of Europe.

Conks · 05/06/2019 12:22

Labour started the privatisation

ilovesooty · 05/06/2019 12:23

I reckon most of the selling off is done and dusted already.

JessieTalamasca · 05/06/2019 12:25

Yes, Conks, you cut and paste that on EVERY thread. Here is a newsflash for you: Labour has not been in power in nine years the sell offs and privatisations have stepped up, increased, done and dusted, separate of Labour . . . imagine! Hmm

Trump is an easy target. Easier than looking at the mess our own people created and continue to go through with.

He's not the problem here, folks.
