Can I ask if you be happy with mixed sexed changing rooms

Just that really not loos but changing rooms
Gyms swimming pools
Keep in mind many changing rooms have no cubicles or if they do they simply have curtains like this images.app.goo.gl/H6pdSPuXJiUqjs817

The picture the OP specifically asked about showed curtains not cubicles, no doubt some women do ogle men but I don't believe women feel entitled to perceive men's bodies as purely for their sexual gratification to quite the same extent. Just my opinion but then again levels of female on male sexual violence are rare indeed whereas male rape of women, not so rare. A lot of men I've met see women as a walking sex toy unfortunately. I wonder if there are any incidences of women being caught with their head under changing cubicles in mixed sex facilities.

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 12:28

unless they are see-through, I can't see the issue with floor to ceiling curtains. I would not be happy because they don't prevent my toddler from escaping, but safey wise, I am good.

If you are worried about being raped because of a mixed sexed changing room, unfortunately the risk would be exactly the same in a woman-only room. I can think of a couple of horrendous stories of young girls being assaulted in female only toilets in a supermarket.

nokidshere · 05/06/2019 12:31

I don't do communal regardless of it being single or mixed sex. I wouldn't be bothered by curtains though, anything is fine as long as it's not communal.

thenightsky · 05/06/2019 12:34

No way. I've recently given up swimming due to all my local pools going over to unisex changing 'villages'.

StreetwiseHercules · 05/06/2019 12:34

Mixed changing rooms with cubicles have been the norm in swimming pools for 50 years. Anyone who has an issue with these suddenly has an issue generally.

Load of nonsense.

LailaDay · 05/06/2019 12:38

Yes, they're the norm here. With individual cubicles, of course.

I think they're better than single sex communal changing rooms - I don't have much of a problem with them either, but I have plenty of friends who hate getting naked in front of strangers of either sex. Body shaming among women and girls is an issue, too:

Not to mention it makes things much easier for families and trans people.

Mammylamb · 05/06/2019 12:45

No. I’d want lockable cubicles

MangoSplit · 05/06/2019 12:47

Those replying to this thread and saying they’re happy with mixed sex changing rooms with cubicles - how do you feel about open plan with no cubicles?

RiddleyW · 05/06/2019 12:50

I'm happy with our local pool's set-up. It's mixed sex but entirely made up of lockable cubicles - there really is nowhere to loiter and it's always busy so feels quite safe.

Would not use open plan changing personally whether mixed sex or single sex.

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 12:54

I am 100% against open plan with no cubicles, regardless of the gender and any arrangements.

StreetwiseHercules · 05/06/2019 12:55

“Those replying to this thread and saying they’re happy with mixed sex changing rooms with cubicles - how do you feel about open plan with no cubicles?”

Tell me where this exists anywhere in the UK.

MangoSplit · 05/06/2019 12:56

Just pointing out that lots of UK pools do currently have open plan changing rooms.

MangoSplit · 05/06/2019 12:58

Streetwise - an example is Archway swimming pool in North London. There are a few cubicles but hardly any and it gets very busy so most people change in the open plan area.

I’m sure there are other examples but that’s the one I know.

ToPlanZ · 05/06/2019 13:00

The issue with curtains as opposed to floor to ceiling lockable cubicles is that they offer no security. Anyone can push them aside, peek through them or indeed pop a phone through for a photo.

Of course rapes will sadly always happen. However mixed sex changing rooms normalise the presence of men in spaces where women are vulnerable. I'm sure someone more clever that I will dig out the article (I think in the Times) previously posted on Mumsnet that had the figures on increased sexual assaults in unisex compared to single sex changing rooms and toilets.

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 05/06/2019 13:02

Our local pool has a mixed changing area. Only cubicles with doors and it's poolside. That doesn't bother me at all.
What really annoys me is that showers are also open in rows on the poolside. So it means you can't take your chlorinated costume off to shower properly unless you are happy for everyone to get the full view. I have yet to see anyone other than small children remove costumes to shower.

StreetwiseHercules · 05/06/2019 13:02

“Streetwise - an example is Archway swimming pool in North London. There are a few cubicles but hardly any and it gets very busy so most people change in the open plan area. ”

Nope. You said mixed sex open plan changing rooms with no cubicles. Where do these exist?

Yabbers · 05/06/2019 13:03

Our local pool has had them for years. Haven't ever seen a problem.

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 05/06/2019 13:04

Although actually I would prefer a female open plan changing room simply because trying to change myself and two small children in a tiny cubicle is a bit of a nightmare.

MangoSplit · 05/06/2019 13:06

Streetwise - the point is that if non-transitioned trans women are given access to the women’s changing room, under a policy of self ID so that no one can tell if they’re genuinely a trans woman or actually a man, then facilities such as these would effectively become mixed sex.

StreetwiseHercules · 05/06/2019 13:08

Nope. Tell me please where mixed sex open plan changing rooms with no cubicles exist.

Pearlfish · 05/06/2019 13:08

But they are mixed sex if men are allowed in!!

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 13:09

Nope. You said mixed sex open plan changing rooms with no cubicles. Where do these exist?

no one said they existed, it was a question.

The fact that they don't open yet (?) doesn't mean they couldn't tomorrow.

MorondelaFrontera · 05/06/2019 13:09

*EXIST, no open

makes more sense.

StreetwiseHercules · 05/06/2019 13:10

“no one said they existed, it was a question.”

Why would anyone ask a question about in this context about something which doesn’t exist?

If they did open tomorrow, you would have a choice about whether to utilise or not.

So the issue is?

2Rebecca · 05/06/2019 13:10

No, my gym has no cubicles just an open changing area and no room to change in the showers. Our local cycle park changing rooms are also open. There are a couple of single changing rooms off the corridor for people who want privacy.
Our swimming pool just has a mixed sex cubicle area and I don't have a problem with that, it's handy for family changing with small kids.
You need a lot more room for individual cubicles though and older establishments should stick to providing single sex changing if the changing areas are open.
