AIBU?

Mon to Fri walking 5 miles a day.

Watching what I eat but not too strict otherwise I will just cave in. So cutting out bread, potatoes, rice and pasta.

Can I lose weight? I'm looking to lose 2 stone by Sep?

5 miles a day will burn approx 250 calories. You need to burn approximately 3500 calories to lose a pound of weight.

So if you're maintaining your weight at the moment, you should lose a pound every 3 weeks (250cals x 5 = 1250 cals per week).

This is obviously based on averages. If you can cut down the calories you eat by the same amount every day of the week, then you could probably lose about a pound a week.

I lost the most weight I've ever lost without even noticing it, by walking 6 miles per day. It did it year round in the north of scotland, including in the snow and rain, and I loved it. Just need to be a bit careful not to buy chocolate every time you walk past a corner shop.

moreismore · 04/06/2019 14:31

It depends by how much you are overeating. If you cut overall calories and increase exercise you should lose weight, unless you continue to eat far more than your body can use. Regardless the extra exercise will benefit your health. Something like MyFitnessPal may be helpful.

feelingverylazytoday · 04/06/2019 14:32

Well it should help, though it's not a massive amount of exercise.

LoveTheLakes40 · 04/06/2019 14:32

That’s 25 miles a week. Not sure if you’ll lose 2 stone, but that depends on your diet.

Is it walking in a pavement or up and down hills on an uneven surface, carrying a backpack? The 2nd option burns a surprising amount more.

Moneybegreen · 04/06/2019 14:34

Completely depends on your calorie intake.

AnnieMay100 · 04/06/2019 14:39

Depends on your current weight/height and calorie intake. It’s possible. I walk 4 miles a day eat 1200 calories and lost 3 stone in 6 months and kept it off (bad divorce and comfort eating) if you’re in the right frame of mind you can do it and keep it off.

Pgqio · 04/06/2019 14:39

I walk around 5 miles a day but it's never had much impact on my weight, your calorie intake is the real deal. I've lost over a stone in a couple of weeks because of anxiety and having no appetite and I'm hardly moving, it's definitely more about what you eat.

awalkintheparka · 04/06/2019 14:39

Walking that much is fine. I do on average around 5 miles just from the daily grind (my fit bit tells me so) but you do need to be strict with calorie intake. 80% of weight is diet.

Work out a weekly calorie intake and don't go over it- I.e if you want extras on the weekend then factor that in to your weekly intake. 1400 cals a day in the week and 2000 at the weekend = 11000 calories a week. If you go over by Friday then eat less on Saturday. If you are under then you can eat more. You need to put yourself in a deficit

These are currently my weight loss target calories and depends entirely on your current height and weight.

BackforGood · 04/06/2019 14:44

It will help, for sure, and also help with your general wellbeing and fitness. However, this So cutting out bread, potatoes, rice and pasta is likely to have a bigger impact.
Doing both together is great Smile. Well done you.

Apolloanddaphne · 04/06/2019 14:45

I walk at least 5 miles a day, have done for years, and eat a fairly healthy diet but I have lost no weight. I would need to really restrict my calories to lose weight.

TantricTwist · 04/06/2019 14:48

Walking will definitely help a lot alongside cutting down on your calories.
The cardio aspect of it helps your heart, stamina, bone density its win win on so many levels.
It's hard and unneccessary to cut out carbs tbh but do cut out bread for now.

cocomelon23 · 04/06/2019 14:50

I doubt you would lose much tbh. You need to focus more on diet than exercise. Exercise should be strenuous and you should be out of breath.

Dvg · 04/06/2019 14:56

diet means more than exercising when losing weight, doubt 5 miles a day will really do much but its helpful to do it alongside eating healthy, also you don't need to limit portion sizes really just dont go for seconds and eat healthy, dont let your self get hungry so plenty of healthy snacks

ArthurMc · 04/06/2019 14:58

I lost 4 stones in 2016 of pregnancy weight by just walking and watching my diet.
I have lost just over 2 stones from beginning of this year to now by doing the same. Again pregnancy weight.

NoNameNoGame · 04/06/2019 15:03

So the walk I do is a mixture of uphill / downhill as it's a walking trail (which is so scenic might I add). I'm only on week 2. I will definitely be cutting back on the calories. Prior to this my exercise was 0.

5 miles is around 10000 steps which is great for your overall health and if you watch what you eat it will definitely help you lose weight. I’ve been doing that amount of walking for over a year now and it has made such a difference to my figure but I need to watch my diet more as the weight loss is slower than i hoped

thenightsky · 04/06/2019 15:06

I imagine you'd have to slowly increase the mileage as the weeks went on and your body adjusted and got used to it.

My mum walked 5 miles most days, mostly carrying heavy shopping on the return uphill leg. She was fat all her life. She used to say 'I can't understand how I'm still fat when I do all this'. She also did a hard core cleaning job.

Pinkvoid · 04/06/2019 15:07

I walk 6 miles every day to school and back x2 but haven’t lost much weight. That’s with a pram as well and part of it is uphill. Diet is most important and mine is pretty awful.

Thingsthatgo · 04/06/2019 15:08

It should help, maybe slowly, but that’s no bad thing. Just watch that you don’t inadvertently increase calorie intake because you’ll probably be hungrier than usual. Also, when I first started walking (I do 6-8 miles per day) I was a bit tired and sat down more for the rest of the day than I would have normally, which didn’t help the calorie burn!!

ArthurMc · 04/06/2019 15:08

I went from a size 14 to size 10/12 since beginning of the year so def possible when combined with a diet.

redwoodmazza · 04/06/2019 15:47

If you walk 5 miles a day from Monday to Friday, at the end of the week you'll be 25 miles away!!! Wink

Morgan12 · 04/06/2019 15:53

Get a Fitbit! Set a weight loss goal through that. I've went for 1.5 lbs a week so I need a 750 calorie deficit each day. I log all food and walk till I the Fitbit tells me I've hit the target.
