To ask if you saw a 'celebrity' would you approach them?

Just been in a pram shop and saw an actress from Hollyoaks, DH told me to ask for a pic but I said no because she was clearly busy being shown a pram 😂 so just wondering if you saw a celebrity in a shop would you approach them? Or let them get on with their life.

Also should they be ready to be approached constantly or not? Whats your opinion x

I know someone who approached someone at a urinal once.

Flairhead · 06/06/2019 08:52

I kind of have. A celeb I've met a few times and who knows me by name. He was in town to do a show and I saw him sitting outside Costa. I went and said hi, he gave me a hug and we had a chat. I probably wouldn't have if we hadn't already met a few times though!

Passthebubbly · 06/06/2019 09:02

God I done this the other week - nick knowles just appeared right in front of me in a hotel bar - I smiled and asked for a photo as my son loved him on I’m a celeb, he done the photo but was so arrogant and rude I honestly wish he had just said no. Wish more that I had not even asked 😂

problembottom · 06/06/2019 09:15

God no I leave them alone! Some famous actors live in my village, like John Thomson from Cold Feet who was having lunch in the same place as me yesterday. Probably outed myself there! They never get bothered because locals either know them or are used to seeing them.

DP is acquaintances with a footballer who did Strictly. Once bumped into him in an airport and they had lunch. DP said the number of people who approached while this guy was trying to eat was ridiculous and he doesn’t know famous types handle it.

Last summer Dutchess of Cambridge was at Princess Diana playground with Charlotte. Everyone pretended she was just another parent, but biy, it was hard not to stare... She's gorgeous!

HappydaysArehere · 06/06/2019 09:26

No, grew up in Chelsea and you saw well known people every day. You would never think of approaching them for an autograph or anything else. I remember standing behind them in shops and often they would be very chatty. Diana Dors was very friendly in this way.
But that was her decision and others were given the respect of normality. Christopher Lee held a door open for me, so did Sir Michael Sergeant etc. My father used to encounter lots of them during his working life and some were lovely like Mia Farrow, Sylvia Simms etc and one or two not so.

Cocolapew · 06/06/2019 09:59

No. Unless it was Debbie Harry, then yes Grin.
Years ago I was walking down Grafton Street in Dublin and saw someone I knew coming towards me. I was ridiculously hungover and couldn't place them. So I just smiled, they smiled back and said hello. I said hello back and we both asked how the other was doing and kept on walking. He was very nice and pleasant.
I said to my boyfriend do you know who that was, I can't place them.
It was Mike Scott from The Waterboys, who I'd seen in concert the week before HmmBlush

longwayoff · 06/06/2019 10:44

Sylvia Syms! She was hard work.

sundowners · 06/06/2019 11:10

dorothysredshoes read it wrong at first and thought you meant the little boy was Mark Owen- not his dad! Was he nice?

HelenRivington · 06/06/2019 11:20

No.

I saw Michael Gambon a couple of months ago walking through Lakeside shopping centre, wearing an absolutely hideous mustard coloured suit. He saw me do a double take (we were walking towards each other) and caught my eye but even though I wanted to yell “OMG It’s Dumbledore!!” I resisted because I can’t think of anything worse than having randoms approach and speak to you.

Fakeflowersandlemonade · 06/06/2019 11:25

My Dd's best friends has a former footballer Dad. He is quite well known where we live. Dd has slept at their house and been out on day trips with them. She was totally oblivious he was ever 'famous' to her he is just her friends Dad. He has even been to our house a few times.

Eastie77 · 06/06/2019 11:25

I used to regularly see a famous former footballer who played for the team I support. It was always when I was out walking in the nearby forest with DD to when she was a baby and he was usually walking his dog. I never approached him although would have loved to, have had a crush on him for yearsBlush.

He recently did a Q&A with fans in a local venue and it was published in the paper. One fan mentioned they used to see him out and about in the same area and always wanted to say hello. He responded that they absolutely should, he loves talking to fans and taking pics as long as he isn't with his small kids. Wish I had approached him now!

Eastie77 · 06/06/2019 11:26

Funny cross-post Fake!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/06/2019 11:27

My friend saw Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell on holiday last year on a very quiet beach having a barbecue.
Goldie approached my friend with a bottle of wine when she saw she was drinking coke, said 'enough of that' and then they spent the afternoon getting happily sozzled!
She sent me some great photos of Goldie filling up her wine glass.

Elderflower14 · 06/06/2019 11:37

@HelenRivington I saw MG many years ago at Aldeburgh boating Lake when his children were small. I think he was newly Dumbledore then. I too didn't approach.

Vilanelle · 06/06/2019 12:35

I Would like to think I wouldn't however if it was a member of Take That, depending on the situation I would love to say hello.

I went to a McFly gig and stood at the stage door after, Tom Fletcher came out and asked if we had enjoyed the show and made small talk - he was very nice.

I also met him again about 2 years ago in the Caribbean! News had got around the hotel that a celeb was staying there and I overheard some americans asking who he was, yet trying to find him even though they didn't knwo who he was.

Tom took a photo of a person taking a photo of a person they thought was him. Quite funny

Winebottle · 06/06/2019 13:31

If they love the attention, I don't want to feed their ego. If just they want to go about their daily business without been hassled, I don't want to annoy them.

MinesaPinot · 06/06/2019 14:10

The only time I have ever done it was after the theatre one night when I happened to see Judi Dench standing alone as we came out. I'd seen her in A Little Night Music prior to that and I stopped and told her I didn't want to take up her time, but that I just wanted to say what a wonderful performance she gave and how she made me cry when she sang 'Send in the Clowns'. She was so nice, said it was lovely to be thanked, and I went on my way. Whole exchange couldn't have taken more than a minute.

DH on the other hand still brings up the time that I didn't let him go and speak to a footballer who, at the time, had just left the team that we both support. He was in the same coffee shop that we were with his wife and kids. DH said 'I only wanted to shake his hand' but I said if he was on his own then may be, but not when he was with his family.

SilverySurfer · 06/06/2019 14:58

Years ago I had a Saturday antique stall in a market in London and one time a Carry On Actress turned up. She picked up a Royal Dalton Jug from my stall and offered a ridiculously low price for it which I refused. I can't tell you how many times she came back, picked it up, offered an absurd price and put it back again, I even recall her saying 'don't you know who I am' at one point which made me laugh.

Eventually she made an offer which I accepted just to get rid of her. She picked it up triumphantly and left the market. About an hour later she was back again and said to me 'you're a bloody fool, I've just checked and the jug is worth more than I paid for it'. I replied 'no, you're the bloody fool, I bought it for five quid and made a really good profit'. She went blood red and stormed out, never to be seen again.

Topseyt · 06/06/2019 14:59

Firstly, I probably wouldn't recognise that many of them these days.

Secondly, I am not particularly into celebrities anyway.

Thirdly, even if I did recognise them I would think that they are just going about their daily business, which they are entitled to attend to in peace and without being constantly approached by random strangers.

I think some people forget that they are strangers to the celebrity in question. They don't actually know them.

theemmadilemma · 06/06/2019 16:19

No, I never would and I think it's really rude unless they are in a professional setting.

I do have a good story though. I don't think enough people know it that it would out me, or the ones that do won't be here.

I used to live above and work at a live music venue. It was only open nights through the week so I had to have a day job.

Sometimes the weekday nights could get messy and long.

I wasn't working one night but the party was raging and I couldn't sleep so I phoned my Mum and asked for her sofa for the evening so I could be ok for work the next day.

Was grumpy and not thinking so just drove there and therefore returned to said venue at 7am the next morning. I let myself in, and straight through to the bar to grab some cash (I was allowed!!).

Guy sitting there at the bar I don't know.

Him: Nods to me. "You want a shot?"
Me: "Umm, I'm just back to get ready for work, othewise I'd love one."
Landloard returns from back: 'Emma, this John, John this is Emma, she lives here'.
Me and John: Nod.

Found out later it was John Entwistle.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 06/06/2019 18:34

A few years back, I went to the theatre with DS, DIL & DD, to see 'Wolf Hall'. While we were waiting to go in, I realised that I was standing next to Hilary Mantel. Her Damehood had just been announced, so I approached her, and rather diffidently said that I'd like to congratulate her, and thank her - for the honour, but mainly for her wonderful writing. She went bright red, murmured, 'Thank you' and disappeared into the crowd... Smile

Namechangeforthegamechange · 06/06/2019 18:40

No! Just smile and say hi if you walk past.

Springfern · 06/06/2019 18:41

I got into a very drunken conversation with Kerry Katona in a bar once, although tbh I think she approached me

Ladymargarethall · 06/06/2019 19:53

I saw a BBC presenter at Euston station. He gave me a smile as he realised I had recognised him, but that was it.
In company with a lot of others I wouldn't recognise a lot of celebrities.
