To ask what is so captivating about Freddie Mercury?

I just can't get enough of him and it genuinely makes my heart so sad to think about what he went through, and how he did it so graciously.

I was only mid teens when he died and the older I've got the more I feel this sense of being in complete awe of him.

I think a lot of today's music is just pure shite!

Anyone else?

My DCs’ school had a ‘Superhero Day’ where they had to go dressed either as a commercial superhero or ‘someone who is a superhero to you’. My four year old Reception DS asked to go as Freddie Mercury. We were so fecking proud of him, we went to town on his costume and he ended up in the local paper Grin None of his classmates knew who he was supposed to be so the teacher (bless her) played a clip of Live Aid for them.

(We went for the Wembley ‘86 look, if you’re wondering)

ElizaPancakes · 02/06/2019 13:34

I just watched the movie and it’s reignited my love for Queen. Such an astonishing voice, and genuinely not one dud song from them.

I try not to listen too much because I get an almost ASMR response to their music that I don’t want to lose.

Yabbers · 02/06/2019 13:36

It was his talent, his character, and his professionalism. It blows me away to hear his final recordings in the days before he died. You couldn’t tell the difference between those and any others he did when he was well.

tomtom1999xx · 02/06/2019 13:38

Yes, his live aid performance was one of his best & he knew he was dying.

ElphabaTheGreen · 02/06/2019 13:38

Erm. Don’t ever listen to ‘Hot Space’ if you want to keep up that delusion...Grin

lovelylondonsky · 02/06/2019 13:39

I have a massive crush on FM.

He was ridiculously talented and absolutely gorgeous.

Looks very hot in this interview

Duster12 · 02/06/2019 13:41

Elsphaba it's a good album. Watch Live at the Bowl.

ElphabaTheGreen · 02/06/2019 13:49

I have Duster. The only relief in that show was when they moved firmly away from the Hot Space numbers.

Honorary shite mentions on other albums also go to Tenement Funster, Drowse, Delilah and pretty much everything John wrote (with the obvious exception of Another One Bites the Dust).

But I luffs Queen and Freddie dearly (although I’ll be a Brian girl til I die).

Duster12 · 02/06/2019 13:53

Do you only listen to to metal/rock cos you def won't like it if so. It also contains Las Palabras, which to me is just stunning....

speakout · 02/06/2019 13:58

I dan't care for him I'm afraid.

I was a teenager when he was at his peak and I could see then the unsavoury aspect surrounding him and his contempraries.
That whole glam rock/groupie /underage/vulnerable scene is unpleasant, and Mercury played no small part. His anctics in New York, gay clubs and staff would shove underage boys and girls in his direction, the youngsters were starry eyed and vulnerable.

Mercury makes my skin creep.

ElphabaTheGreen · 02/06/2019 13:59

Las Palabras and Under Pressure are the only good songs on that album. The rest are early 80s horror-shows.

I am definitely more into their 70s stuff, but Hammer to Fall, Princes of the Universe, Headlong etc are glorious. They should basically have gone off and and a good hard look at themselves from 79-84 rather than putting down tracks!

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 14:07

I hope very much he'd not have ended up endorsing Farage! Brian Ferry hasn't covered himself in glory with his political remarks in recent years. hmm

You could say the same (or worse) about Morrissey.

Moondancer73 · 02/06/2019 14:09

He just comes across as a genuinely nice person I think. I feel the same about George Michael, was very sad when he died

NettleTea · 02/06/2019 14:09

my mum's friend worked as a PA for him and said that he was the nicest man ever - respectful and kind to everyone from the cleaner in the hotel room to the highest paid superstar. But my God he knew how to host a party!

Justaboy · 02/06/2019 14:12

Maybe a bit Anoraky for some but a piece here on how they recorded 'Bohemian Rhapsody and a night at the opera. It tell an interesting story of the band and what it was like working for them and some of the insturments involved and used etc.

I love him. I remember crying when I heard that he had passed away.

On hearing he phoned to talk to his cats when he was on tour was the day I knew he was amazing. I did the same thing (to my dog) so felt less alone.

A lot of people compare God and Freddie Mercury.

I mean he's good

But he's no Freddie. Grin

as for not liking queen

Ironfloor269 · 02/06/2019 14:23

I'm with you. I'm obsessed with Freddie Mercury and I'm reading one biography and have reserved three more books about him at the library.

I think it's his enormous, almost supernatural talent. He was unique in the sense he could do rock music as well as opera, and he was a immensely good song writer and musician.

Also, the fact that despite all that, he was just a normal human being. No false airs, no trying hard to be a role model.

I also totally agree that musicians of today are absolutely talentless. If not for all the technology that makes them barely listenable, they'd all be utter failures.

myhamster · 02/06/2019 14:24

He just had such an amazing voice and some of the songs really do send shivers down your spine. Also the rest of Queen were amazingly talented musicians too.

"Love of my life don't leave me" is one of them, along with "Who Wants To Live Forever". "These Are the Days of Our Lives" always brings a tear to my eye as he was clearly unwell then.

My first ever cassette tape was Queen's Greatest Hits 2, which was Bohemian Rhapsody and other great songs. I was 10 I think then, and grew up with A Kind of Magic and The Works and saw Queen on Live Aid. My friend saw the Magic tour and it is one of my greatest regrets in life that I never got to see Queen live.

I had a civil wedding and we walked back up the aisle to "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Grin

CruellaFeinberg · 02/06/2019 14:29

He was a force of nature, what an amazing voice and personality - although i can imagine you would be saying... can someone turn off freddie now.... its a bit much

@BuzzShitbagBobbly thats not what i would call acapella, thats just the vocal tracks

(with full cheese!!)
TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 02/06/2019 14:29

I was 13 when he died. I'd grown up with Aunties who were obsessed with him, but I'd never been a fan (Bros and Rick Astley all the way for me!).

Then he died and Queen were everywhere. I noticed the stunningly beautiful Roger Taylor and my interest was piqued.

From then on I was truly obsessed. I raised my parents vinyl collection from the 70s and devoured A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. I discovered Mott the Hoople and David Bowie because of Queen. I then found Led Zepellin in the album collections and was truly hooked.

My obsession eventually died down.

Then Bohemian Rhapsody came out. I wasn't overly impressed but my teen DD was mesmerised and her obsession took off. She would tell me all these interesting facts and sing the songs, I introduced her to some of my favourite lesser known songs (Lap of the Gods is fabulous and '39....i could go on!!)

She then told me that Brian May is wonderful on Instagram. At which point I logged in to my long forgotten Insta account and started following him. He's really good, total geek and occasionally a bit grumpy - I adore his posts.

From there, I discover Roger Taylor had a page. That's when I discovered his son, Rufus. OMG. He's the drummer in The Darkness and he is fiiiiiine. His daughters Tigerlily and Lola also have accounts that are quite interesting, they've all just been to Ibiza and I lived vicariously through their pics for the last week 😂

I'd have killed for this kind of access to the band back in the early 90s. Instead I had to get my mum to tape late night showings of interviews and documentarys.

So. Yeah. #obsessed.

MulticolourMophead · 02/06/2019 14:35

I grew up listening to Queen, my mum was a massive fan. I'm now 50 and still listen to quite a bit, although musically my tastes head more towards Rammstein.

We sent mum off on her final journey last year to Don't Stop Me Now, so when I went to see Bohemian Raspsody, I was crying my eyes out when it was played on the closing credits.

Meanwhile, was anyone else listening to that Somebody To Love acapella and imagining all the music as it played? I was filling in the gaps mentally.

RockNRollNerd · 02/06/2019 14:46

I’ve posted this before on Freddie Mercury threads but this is my happy place and I think shows him at his best. The sheer joy and delight on Monstserrat Caballe’s face makes me cry every time.

And the song knocks the spots off Barcelona as well in my view.
