AIBU to think you shouldn’t demand people wear fancy dress to your party when you can’t be bothered wearing fancy dress yourself?!

Just this really!
Friend of DP has regular parties where she commands people wear fancy dress...this latest one a particular theme...and not a theme you would ordinarily have hanging around your wardrobe...
Some expense later , you turn up at party in fancy dress theme and see host in ordinary clothes...because she ‘found it too much hassle to find something’ for the theme she chose for her party!

That's ridiculous! I hate fancy dress anyway I don't go out that much so when I do I like to wear my choice of clothes

Yanbu what a pisstake!

Banhaha · 02/06/2019 15:23

That's just silly! It's her party and theme so if anything i'd expect her to be the most fancy dressed person there!

Doesn’t anyone say anything to her?

“For heaven’s sake, Hyacinth - we have all gone to the time and expense of finding costumes for the costume party YOU insisted on - and you can’t be arsed to do the same? Frankly we feel like we are being taken for mugs!”

I did this once. Friends persuaded us to have a Halloween party. They all turned up in really amazing costumes, professional looking make up etc when I'd thrown on a black dress and straightened my hair and claimed to be Morticia Addams. I felt quite shabby about it but I hate fancy dress and don't see the point of it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/06/2019 17:11

I don’t think that is shabby, @Pgqio - you had sorted out a costume - which is more than the OP’s friend does. And she is the one insisting on costumes.

YANBU. That's a pisstake.

I personally love fancy dress and when myself and my Ex-H moved to our village, we popped into the village pub the first week and found out they were doing a 60s / 70s fancy dress for NYE.

We thought NYE was the perfect time to get to know the locals, especially with the silliness of fancy dress to ignite conversation. We made a mental note, but didn't return to the pub over the next few weeks as we were unpacking, decorating, settling in and preparing for Christmas.

Come NYE, Ex-H is dressed up like a Starsky and Hutch character, complete with wig. I'm dressed as a punk, fake piercings, pink and blue hair, with mad make-up.

We rock up to the pub, we can hear it's heaving inside. We walk in and the whole pub goes silent. We were the only two dressed up in fancy dress.

After the landlady stopped laughing, she explained that a regular had passed away just before Christmas, so nobody was in the mood for the fancy dress element, as we'd not been in there since the week we moved in, we didn't know.

We contemplated going home to get changed, but our appearance caused quite a stir, a lot of laughter and broke the ice with the locals in one swoop. 😂😂

I might share this story as an OP to see what other fancy dress fails people have to share. Still laugh now about our introduction to the village.

But going back to you OP, YADNBU!!
