It’s possible that I have spent too long on Facebook whilst flopping in the sun in the garden today, but just been musing how useful a ‘like’ button on thread comments would be.

Often agree with PP, but feel like a plank saying ‘yeah, what they ^ said’.

Am I alone in this (now, quite frankly) burning desire? 😂

Flopping in the sun in the garden?!! Been shit here.
I’ve often thought the same. There was a thread not long ago about the same thing. Not many people agreed.

Nomorechickens · 01/06/2019 22:05

I agree. It can get tedious scrolling down page of comments saying basically the same thing.
Also to be able to reply to individual comments rather than try to copy and paste text or names (which I can never do)

JellySlice · 01/06/2019 22:07

No. Definitely do not want this. This is one of the features that sets MN apart from other SM sites. And that sets MN above other SM sites, too. Posters comment, explain, talk.

SerenDippitty · 01/06/2019 22:08

No you’re not alone. What I would also like is a button that takes you back to the last comment you made on a thread. It’s irritating when you go back to a thread to find it is now 4 pages longer but you want to read everything since you commented.

coconuttelegraph · 01/06/2019 22:09

You might want to refer to the eleventy billion past posts on this subject, but to summarise for you some people would like one, many many many many more do not, MNHQ have always said it will never happen

WorraLiberty · 01/06/2019 22:09

This suggestion comes up time and time again and makes a lot of MNetters angry Grin

Personally I'm all for it and I don't think it would stop conversation, as a lot of people think it would.

Probably not going to happen though, as there's a fairly vocal few who are vehemently against it and I suspect a lot more who aren't bothered one way or another.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/06/2019 22:09

We are not the daily mail.

crazyasafox · 01/06/2019 22:09

Hell no.

Other forums like Digital spy and MSE have 'like' buttons, and it encourages ganging up and bullying.

Eg, if someone gets 30 'likes' and the person they are arguing with gets only 3, it makes the first person look more 'correct,' and like they are more popular/well liked.

The only thing MN needs is an edit button, if only for 2 minutes so you can correct typos.

coconuttelegraph · 01/06/2019 22:10

Serendippity - that function already exists, bookmark your post and you will be taken back there the next time you open the thread

crazyasafox · 01/06/2019 22:12

@SerenDippitty all you need to do to return to where you are, is 'bookmark' the last post you read.

SerenDippitty · 01/06/2019 22:13

Thank you coconut. Often wondered what that was for, duh.... Blush

MatthewBramble · 01/06/2019 22:17

Don't know about a "like" button but we really need an edit key.

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2019 22:18

No thanks. It's MN Talk. The clue is in the name.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 01/06/2019 22:19

I wish there was a poll function... especially for aibu!

TrixieFranklin · 01/06/2019 22:22

This again!?! We don't fucking want a like button.

WorraLiberty · 01/06/2019 22:25

Who exactly are 'we' Trixie? You don't speak for everyone.

Actually, a poll on this very subject would be interesting.

I know a fair few people are against a like button but I often wonder if they're just more vocal.

Or if those who wouldn't mind one, just can't be bothered to join the threads and voice their unpopular opinion.

TrixieFranklin · 01/06/2019 22:29

The hundreds of people who have commented on what seems like a hundred threads on this that pop up all the time. It's been suggested soooo many times and always shot down. If there was enough genuine interest HQ would have done it by now.

WorraLiberty · 01/06/2019 22:34

Thanks for clarifying.

I still wonder if there are more people than we think, who would either quite like one or wouldn't mind either way.

It's just that some MNetters seem to get irrationally worked up about it and I wonder if that puts people off saying they wouldn't mind one.

Either way, I can see it happening but in the very distant future.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2019 22:50

Other forums like Digital spy and MSE have 'like' buttons, and it encourages ganging up and bullying.

And Reddit. I agree that it is a bullying tool.
