.. to get emergency contraception

Posting for traffic!

I had the Mirena inserted on Thursday lunch and (drunkenly Blush) had unprotected sex with my partner last night. The dr didn't mention if I would be protected immediately and after googling I'm freaking out!

Should I get emergency contraception?

Thank you!

Did you have it fitted within 7 days of starting a period?

Were you using hormonal contraception prior to having it fitted?

If not you may require emergency contraception.

None of the above! Confused I'm going to get it! 😱

You should have been told you need additional contraceptive precautions for 7 days after insertion - usually condoms are sufficient.

So if you had unprotected sex and don’t want to risk pregnancy then EC is indicated. You can buy it over the counter in pharmacies. If you’re under 25 some pharmacies will give it for free if they’ve signed up to the scheme.

You absolutely do need to - and ASAP!

Mumao · 01/06/2019 10:18

I wish I were under 25! How embarrassing!

Oh bloody hell! I'm going into town in 30 mins so will get it then!

Why didn't I ask! Ffs

the doctor should have told you IMO.

absolutely right to get emergency contraception.

Nothing to be embarrassed about a lot of people have been there.

I thought you could have the coil inserted AS emergency contraception didn't realise the mirena would be different

I know I wasn't told it wouldnt be effective immediately (of course I also wasn't told about the increased risk of perforation if you were breastfeeding so that doesn't mean that it isn't the case)

It's the copper coil that's used as emergency contraception not the mirena. I was told to continue my mini pill for 7 days after my mirena was inserted
