Is it possible to have an easy menopause / perimenopause?

I'm so scared about what the next few years entail for me in terms of the menopause / perimenopause.

The media is full of tales about how destructive it is to the quality of women's lives - anxiety, depression, memory problems, mood swings, hot flushes, home and work life negatively affected - the list goes on........

Do some women ever sail through it with minimal symptoms or are we all doomed to go through a really dark period in our lives?

I guess I hope to hear some positive experiences from Mumsnetters , that it doesn't have to be all that bad!

Thank you

I can't cope with alcohol right now either. 49 and experiencing hot flushes at moment. Not this VERY moment, but every day now. For the last two months or so? They're aren't that bad though.

But zero tolerance for alcohol. I was in a pub with colleagues a while ago and I started laughing and weed a bit. Then couldn't stop the flow. I had to put my coat on still sitting down and leave, feeling 'wet'. I was horrified.

I was expecting it to be awful as my Mum had had a dreadful time. I had two very heavy periods then they just stopped. The only other symptom I had was night sweats, which were annoying and uncomfortable, but I could put up with them.

my mother is 58 she sailed through the menopause

she did start it late as she was still having periods at 49/50

she didnt go on hrt and apart from saying she was to hot at night i dont think she had much else

DuchessOfBallybrack · 01/06/2019 19:24

I'm still having periods at 49 and that is not late. My mother had her last at 56.

My boss is very much into her fitness and without realising it, she went through the menopause. I think it affects everyone differently

In the past 3-4 years (I'm 52) I've had a few bouts of hot flushes - weirdly they all occur/ed within about a three hour window - very erratic periods from 20 to 172 days, lasting from about 3 to 10 days each and not much else really. Oh, I also have occasional odd itching on my back, almost like a numb tingly itch, which I can only really put down to peri. I appear to be getting away with it lightly.

Fairly uneventful. Glad not to have pmt and concentration problems any more.

LadyRannaldini · 01/06/2019 20:06

I don't even remember it at all, I had by last period at around 38 so it must have been around then.

romany4 · 01/06/2019 20:54

I'm nearly 48 and been having irregular periods for last 6 months or so.
I'm moody, get hot at night and a bit itchy, Apart from that I feel fine. Can't take HRT due to a lot of female cancer in my family so I'm hoping this is as hard as it gets

52, last period was 7 months ago (I don’t count the odd bit of spotting). I feel as though my hormone levels are cycling at lower levels but I do still notice some shifts. I started noticing changes about 5 years ago - from regular as clockwork to being ‘out’ by a few days to being weeks out and then months. The main challenge for me has been that meno’ seems to have decided to bitch slap me with everything I thought I’d dealt with -every old injury emotional and physical. The anger is interesting! I’ve also had odd aches and pains some of which have been annoyingly hard to shift - shoulders, knees etc. No hot flushes though, at least not so far. For various reasons I’ve stopped drinking alcohol and I really limit what I eat. I’m a bit slimmer than I used to be pre-meno’. Some of that is doubtless down to diet and no booze but I do suspect oestrogen wasn’t my ‘friend’ in terms of a long-term struggle with my weight.

I'm 52.periods are irregular now sometimes very heavy. No hot flushes but the occasional mood swing (emotional/angry) only chronic symptom is lack of restorative deep sleep. Hoping this is as bad as it gets. I have been taking 300 Mg of Magnesium for last couple of years so that might have helped. The horror stories do make you worry. This thread has made me feel so much better. Smile

I have no symptoms Periods got lighter and then stopped
Might have been a tad irritable but I have always had a short fuse and as pps have said it all came about at same time as teenagers were being teenagey !!Smile

I saw a programme years and years ago that said menopause symptoms can be genetic. I remeber asking my dm to find what was in store for me and she said her periods became irregular then stopped. my menopause - my periods became irregular, very light then stopped.
