Branded or Supermarket Own?

Following some other recent threads I've been thinking there are some foods I buy that I will take whatever is on (special!) offer, but others where my family has specific preferences.
Branded - has to be Heinz baked beans, Kenco Rich Roast coffee and Aunt Bessie frozen roast potatoes.
But we actually prefer Tesco frozen mash, Tesco teabags, Aldi steak, and Stockwell (Tesco brand) pickles.

What about your household?

Ah thanks @ems137 - I honestly didnt know they still made them.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 31/05/2019 12:06

Branded - Birds Eye peas and Lipton's tea are the only things I can think of.

Gth1234 · 31/05/2019 12:53

Another couple.

Whole Earth peanut butter. No other comes close. It happens to be more expensive, though. There's never anything else in it. Just peanuts. Oil and Sugar get added to many. Why oil. Why sugar?

Lemon Curds. Look at the ingredient list. It's easy to tell the good ones. The goods ones cost at least £2.00 a pot, and taste like it.

Panda90 · 31/05/2019 12:58

I have to have Cadburys chocolate. Supermarket own brand chocolate just isn't the same. When I occasionally have a can of coke it has to be coca cola. For most other things I'll buy the supermarkets own brand unless the branded stuff is on offer. Aldis specially selected range is very nice

Gth1234 · 31/05/2019 13:00

Crisps/Snacks/Chocolate/Cakes

I have a couple of local "bargain shops" and market stalls I use selling expired/short dated stuff". Check the dates carefully, they are often stacks cheaper than any supermarket. I wouldn't buy out of date cakes, as they can go stale but crisps and chocs are fine. Kipling Cakes Slices at £1 or so for 2 packs. Crisps at 50p/large sharing bag. Those sort of prices.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 31/05/2019 13:44

Aldi’s fruit and veg never last a day, I don’t know if I’ve just had bad look each time?

Ketchup- Heinz
Teabags- Glengetti
Comfort creations- Honeysuckle and Sandlewood
Butter- Anchor, Clover or Countrylife

Anything else I go with what’s on offer and cheapest for size etc.

Although I did buy Iceland fresh Tiger bread last week as it had good reviews, it’s the nicest tiger bread we’ve had, looks dense when you cut it but it’s so light when you eat it.

Teddybear45 · 31/05/2019 13:52

@snowy - compare that to waitrose. Bought 2kg of carrots for 60p last month and still going strong. Similarly the pack of peppers in the fridge is from costco 2 months ago. No hint of mould.

I think with veg you often get what you pay for.

goose1964 · 31/05/2019 14:12

Coffee nescafe gold blend for day to day
And marmite,

mushroom3 · 31/05/2019 14:18

PG tips tea everything else can be unbranded (we find Lidl/Aldi tea too weak). We like Ikea tomato ketchup and mustard.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 31/05/2019 14:43

@Teddybear45 That’s good going! I love Waitrose food. I agree you get what you pay for. It’s just a shame I can no longer afford to shop their weekly! I do get bits here and there, but can’t do a food shop their anymore. Maybe on day, I will again lol

Oysterbabe · 31/05/2019 15:00

People often say that about Aldi / Lidl veg but I've never had an issue. I do spent a few minutes looking through and finding items that are firm and look healthy. I've had a bag of Lidl carrots in my veg drawer for a couple of weeks and they're still completely fine.

Biker47 · 31/05/2019 17:30

Heinz beans are shite compared to Branston's.

And if you say regular Nescafe coffee, I'm sorry, but do you even have any working tastebuds? It's the most bitter shit coffee available out there.

Itsnotmesothere · 31/05/2019 17:59

Oysterbabe Are the corresponding sizes of the Lidl nappies a similar fit to Aldi? It's slightly more convenient for me to shop at Lidl.

Lidl fruit and veg I find to be fine apart from the onions. They're always bloody soft. I bought some Lidl organic spinach used half in one dish and used the other half in a dish 4 days later. Was absolutely fine.

TrixieFranklin · 31/05/2019 18:02

Heinz Beans, Hellman's mayo, Pepsi, marmite, warburtons crumpets.

Everything else is own brand unless on offer.

Rockmysocks · 31/05/2019 18:06

Used to be Heinz tomato ketchup as the only one for me but Lidl's organic Kania ketchup is bloody lovely and is now first choice.

Nothing beats Fairy washing up liquid.

Yogagirl123 · 31/05/2019 18:09

Colman’s mustard only, has to be IMHO
Ketchup, Lidl version is better than Heinz IMHO
Lidl Knightsbridge Gold Tea, knocks spots of everyone else including Yorkshire IMHO
Love most items I buy at Aldi.

Allyg1185 · 31/05/2019 18:23

Only branded thing I use is Lurpack

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/05/2019 18:27

Nescafe Gold coffee , nothing else

Own brand washing powder (Tesco or Waitrose as it is non-tested)
Tesco DW tablets
Waitrose washing up liquid (original)

Heinz ketchup for DS

lemon curd - own brand but it has to be the 'naice' one .

Didn't like Costco veg it seemed a bit under ripe . I bought sweetcorn for my guinea-pigs who refused it . And a huge bag of onions that I didn't realise how many was there so I roasted and froze them.

We don't buy Coke or Pepsi , only rarely soft drinks ( own brand) but I do like Fentimans ginger beer occasionally
And Tropicana orange

avocadochocolate · 31/05/2019 19:07

Marmite is a must.

Other than that almost everything we buy is supermarket basics or whatever is on offer.

Indie139 · 01/06/2019 17:02

I buy own brand supermarket stuff. Except for sauces, certain drinks, cereals, toiletries and laundry products.

myself2020 · 01/06/2019 17:04

All own brand. i spend the last 15 years working for 3 of the really big companies in the food/personal care/home care sector. don’t see a point un buying branded

Londonmummy66 · 01/06/2019 17:59

I thought I wasn't that into brands but maybe I am Blush

Cap Columbie coffee
Fairy washing powder (as anything else brings me out in a rash)
Marmite
Whole Earth peanut butter (because it is just peanuts as a pp said)
Knorr stock
Hellmans mayo
President butter (as it is the only spreadable that is just butter)

DH insists on PG tea and Douwe Egbert coffee (and Otto Schmidt biscuits at Christmas posted over at great expense)

DC won't eat non Heinz beans or Green Giant sweetcorn (I'm just grateful they'll eat low salt/sugar version of both)

Other than that the cupboard is full of whatever was cheapest at the time.

WeCameToDance · 01/06/2019 18:47

Fairy liquid. Although I think it actually saves me money. A big bottle of Fairy lasts me around 3 weeks, whereas a normal size 50p bottle of Tesco washing liquid is gone in days. I think the consistency is a lot thicker so when you pour less comes out.
Coffee, it has to be L'or or Nescafe Gold. I try to stock up when it's on offer.
Clover spread but I've seen lots of love for Lurpak on here so I'm going to try that next time I see it on offer.
Birds eye chicken dippers are the only ones ds will eat. I've tried buying unbranded but he knows.

isseywithcats · 01/06/2019 19:08

im happy with 99% of my shopping coming from aldi and iceland
only ones that i buy branded are Heinz baked beans and either lurpak or anchor spreadable, OH will only eat branston baked beans

isseywithcats · 01/06/2019 19:08
