Branded or Supermarket Own?

Following some other recent threads I've been thinking there are some foods I buy that I will take whatever is on (special!) offer, but others where my family has specific preferences.
Branded - has to be Heinz baked beans, Kenco Rich Roast coffee and Aunt Bessie frozen roast potatoes.
But we actually prefer Tesco frozen mash, Tesco teabags, Aldi steak, and Stockwell (Tesco brand) pickles.

What about your household?

Cornflakes
Diluting juice
Oat milk

That's me but H like brands.

bakedbeanzontoast · 30/05/2019 23:13

Oh and bread too.

yy558 · 30/05/2019 23:43

Personally don't have an issue with shelf life of aldi fruit and veg as I usually eat it all in 1 or 2 weeks of buying. For bread, I usually shove in the freezer the day of buying so mould is no issue

I don't shop anywhere but aldi brand now. Grin also lazy because I can't be doing a 3 shop runaround. Although maybe I'm so used to aldi brand taste now Confused

We found that the Aldi brand bran flakes and muesli taste nicer.

Prefer branded natural peanut butter, I like the pip and nut branded ones. Can't go back now! And dried fruit we prefer Holland and Barratt.

Schnitzelvonkrumb · 30/05/2019 23:51

For cleaning I've never found anything that is as good as viakal Even shouty Barry Scott and his cilit bang but i always get it when its on offer or at savers. Aldi washing liquid i think is as good as brands but i get branded when they're on offer.

Laurajjj · 31/05/2019 00:00

Quorn mince. I'm not aware of any own brand veggie mince.

Toothpaste. Always branded. Dunno why.

Marmite. No own brand yeast extract comes close.

I don't think I'm snobby about anything else Grin

PickAChew · 31/05/2019 00:04

Dorset cereals muesli.
Domestos bleach. It shouldn't be better but I think it's got more detergents in, so just is.

Seniorschoolmum · 31/05/2019 00:14

Lea & Perrins sauce and Tabasco are the only ones I think.

And not exactly a brand but the stoneground whole floor from the local original windmill. Somehow manages to settle stomachs, make the most fabulous bread, and makes me feel healthy. Not sure why.

e1y1 · 31/05/2019 02:37

Oh dear, a lot of mine are tied to brands

Coffee - HAS to be Nescafé Alta Rica, nothing else will do
Tea - PG or Yorkshire.
Coke - either Coca Cola or Pepsi.
McCain, Weetabix, Branson Beans etc
Washing powder - Unless it's Aldi or Lidl (where I don't really shop albeit for no real reason), so MUST be branded, the own brand just doesn't wash and I figure clothes are more expensive than detergent.
Dishwasher stuff - again Finish or Fairy

I'm sure there are loads more, but to be fair, own branded has gotten MUCH better, remember in the 90s most of it was shite.

e1y1 · 31/05/2019 02:59

We had Heinz this week and weren’t impressed. So much bean juice - you get more beans in an Aldi tin

YY to this, this has always been the case, Heinz beans are shite, goes back to my DGM she'd never buy Heinz, always had to be HP (when they still did beans).

Now we won't budge from Branston Beans.

It's odd they're the market leader, but evething else Heinz is great.

agnurse · 31/05/2019 04:44

Instant coffee HAS to be Nescafe or Taster's Choice. Anything else is gross. Similarly, macaroni and cheese HAS to be Kraft Dinner. Generic brand is gross. Pasta sauce has to be Classico.

Pasta can be generic brand. Chinese noodles can be generic too.

cinnabarmoth · 31/05/2019 07:44

I think the only branded thing I buy consistently is clipper tea bags but this isn't because of the taste particularly, but because they are free of plastic. Anything else, I'm usually happy to go with a generic brands and pretty certain that in a blind taste test I wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. I am most partial to branston beans however not willing to pay the extra usually so will only get them on special offer - I usually get reduced sugar and salt beans anyway.

I do think there can be a lot of variation in quality of the equivalent products from shop to shop, for instance as a replacement for Olivio spread I am happy to buy Sainsbury's own brand olive spread but the one from the Co-op is revolting.

Conks · 31/05/2019 07:45

I never buy shop brand stuff. It’s horrible. And yes, I can taste the difference a mile off before you all start.

Pinkyyy · 31/05/2019 07:49

Oh dear I'm very guilty of this. I have a specific brand I buy for majority of our shopping but I would say that the most non-negotiable item is Lurpak butter. I can't be use anything else.

BeanBag7 · 31/05/2019 07:50

We dont really buy branded anything.
Babybel and Dairylea - the Aldi equivalent is really solid (?)
Coca cola very occasionally

I think that's it.

MustBeThin · 31/05/2019 07:56

Have to buy hp brown sauce, Heinz ketchup/salad cream, hellman mayo, colemans mint/prawn sauce Branston's beans/spaghetti, hovis best of both, L'or coffee and cravendale milk.

Asdas jaffa cakes in the blue box (24 for about 80p) are way better than branded.
Their hobnobs are better than banded and cost 41p rather than £1.50.
I also but their weetabix, seasoned fries, frozen square potatoes and frozen veg. Never have takeaway pizza either. I like the ones you get from their counter £2.50 for a 10inch and they aren't full of grease like takeaways. Envy sick face.

MustBeThin · 31/05/2019 07:59

Oh and asdas extra mature cheddar in the purple packet is the only cheese we eat. £3.65 for 750g block. You can buy smaller blocks too, I think the 500g is only £2.50.

Orangeballon · 31/05/2019 08:01

Marks And Spencer extra staring tea bags.

Nicpem1982 · 31/05/2019 08:01

Tea has to be twinnings
Coffee has to be nespresso
Toilet roll has to be cushell
Cleaning products have to be method

Everything else is aldi ownbrand

MustBeThin · 31/05/2019 08:01

Also have to buy branded butter. Either lurpak, country life or anchor. Which ever is on offer.

ems137 · 31/05/2019 08:09

@e1y1 I prefer HP beans and you can usually get them from B&M or home bargains for less than 50p a tin!!

Aspieteach · 31/05/2019 08:10

We nearly always buy supermarket own brand. I can't see the point of paying for a name. I think there's a difference between the quality of own brand and the value ranges, but rarely a difference between own brand and expensive labels.

I make an irrational exception for HP brown sauce because I have bad memories of trying a cheap alternative as a kid.

LagunaBubbles · 31/05/2019 08:14

Warbutons bread is the only thing I can think of as a definite.

daisypond · 31/05/2019 08:14

I never buy any branded items.

Ragwort · 31/05/2019 08:17

I find the own brand pasta is really nasty, I look for de Cirro (?). Same with tinned tomatoes, some of the cheaper ones are all water.

I am very fussy about coffee but my favourite is from Sainsbury’s, the Fair Trade Colombian, won't use anything else.

DH only likes anchor butter. I like Lurpak, used to like President but sure the recipe need recently.

Heinz tomato ketchup, but that’s only from habit, never tried anything else. Grey Poupon French mustard is the best.

CheddarandCrackers · 31/05/2019 08:17

Yorkshire tea, Kellogg's cornflakes, Weetabix, Coca-Cola (I find Pepsi etc tastes odd) think that's it as most other things are interchangeable and indistinguishable from each other.
