Branded or Supermarket Own?

Following some other recent threads I've been thinking there are some foods I buy that I will take whatever is on (special!) offer, but others where my family has specific preferences.
Branded - has to be Heinz baked beans, Kenco Rich Roast coffee and Aunt Bessie frozen roast potatoes.
But we actually prefer Tesco frozen mash, Tesco teabags, Aldi steak, and Stockwell (Tesco brand) pickles.

What about your household?

Like others, the bulk of our shop is own brand. There are a few things we always buy brands ; twinings green tea, Hellman's mayonnaise, Pepsi and Branston beans, though they seem to have changed the recipe so once we've used what we have, I'll probably stop buying beans as I really don't like any others.

AndTheyLivedHappilyEverAfter · 31/05/2019 08:22

Chocolate- Cadbury's or galaxy but do get some unbranded Aldi stuff
Heinz Beans- Not me but the rest of the same
Toothpaste- I somehow trust branded more for toothpaste!

That's it, everything else I pick the cheapest/best value

thesockgap · 31/05/2019 08:27

I'd say over 90% of all our groceries are supermarket own brands.
The only things that absolutely must be a specific brand are:
PG Tips tea bags
Kenco smooth coffee
Nestle honey Cheerios
McCain frozen chips
Walkers crisps
I honestly can't think of anything else that I buy branded!!

SerenDippitty · 31/05/2019 08:31

Morrison’s own brand earl grey tea
Ditto Guatemalan fair trade ground coffee
Ditto 85% cocoa dark chocolate - nicer than Lindt.
Ditto dry tagliatelle, tinned tomatoes and red kidney beans.

Also Co-op own brand super seeded bread is delicious.

I bought Morrison’s own brand Bovril (“beefy drink”) by mistake as the packaging was virtually identical. It was delicious - but when I looked at the ingredients I saw it contained sugar, which Bovril does not- so won’t be buying it again.

GraceMarks · 31/05/2019 08:31

I don't really like instant coffee much any more, but on the occasions when I don't have time/can't be arsed to use the moka pot, Nescafe Azera coffee is the only instant variety I can deal with.

Yorkshire Tea.

Happy with supermarket own brands for just about everything else, except for gin - I have it so rarely now that I want it to be a decent brand when I do!

feelingsinister · 31/05/2019 08:40

I do buy a lot of branded stuff but not everything.

Heinz for beans and ketchup
HP sauce
Fairy liquid and also Fairy laundry liquid. I've got very sensitive skin so once I found a brand that didn't irritate it I stuck.
Not fussed on bread. I actually really like Iceland's thick sliced bread. Hate Kingsmill, like Hovis.
We have a tea issue in this house as I like Dorset and he likes Yorkshire but we agree on PG Tips so mostly buy that.
Muesli and granola I'm not bothered about but only buy Kellogg's cornflakes.
Butter has to be anchor.

feelingsinister · 31/05/2019 08:42

Oh yeah, I would rarely buy own brand booze. I've stopped drinking vodka anyway but own brand is nasty.

I do like the Lidl gin that is like Hendricks.

thesockgap · 31/05/2019 08:48

Oh yes, forgot Fairy Liquid too. It's the only washing up liquid I'll buy.

cherryblossomgin · 31/05/2019 08:52

What ever is cheapest usually but never the very cheap own brand. If Heinz is on offer we get it. Aldi's ketchup is a big no because its spicy. I shop at Aldi and Tesco. M and S for a treat sometimes.

BlueSkiesLies · 31/05/2019 08:54

Marmite
Heinz beans
Heinz ketchup
Nescafé Azera instant coffee
Yorkshire tea bags but tbh I probably can’t tell the difference but being from Yorkshire I like to see those in my cupboard

That’s it for brands I have to have. Not loyal to anything else and generally find supermarket own is perfectly acceptable.

jarhead123 · 31/05/2019 08:55

Pepsi max.

Everything else I get own brand unless on offer

cherryblossomgin · 31/05/2019 08:58

My only thing I am really stuck on is my cleaning products, they have to be method and ecover unless its washing up liquid. It has to be fairy.

HomeEdRocks18 · 31/05/2019 08:59

The only thing that we buy branded is Dr pepper and kellogs crunchy nut cornflakes. Everything else is basic.

Teddybear45 · 31/05/2019 09:01

Tea. I make chai and so it can get quite expensive with weak or ineffective tea bags — I only buy yorkshire tea or Pg tips.

Nothing else has to be branded though.

Oysterbabe · 31/05/2019 09:01

I have zero loyalty and can't think of any brand I always buy. I buy own brand and do most of my shopping in Aldi and Lidl.

Itsnotmesothere · 31/05/2019 09:18

I'm trying to think how "brandy" I am. I only use Fairy Liquid. Only use Flash concentrated luquid cleaner too. Tea must be Yorkshire. Supermarket own canned tomatoes and pasta/gnocchi is fine for me. Once it's covered in sauce, I don't notice whether or not pasta is superior unless fresh. The only cereal I eat is porridge, own brand is fine. The only bacon I buy is actually Sainsbury Taste the Difference thick cut. Nothing else is as good.
Soap bars are usually branded like Nivea or Dove. I like to buy nice soap on offer. Yesterday got Lidl Cien soaps for insanely cheap price. I do use hand pump soap in kitchen for convenience. It has to be branded because all supermarket own is anti-bacterial and I hate that.
The only baked beans I buy are Branston or Heinz. DH swears Lidl beans are nearly as good but the sauce is awful. I hate it when he buys those. On the rare occasion i have tinned tomato soup it must be Heinz.

Yogurts I prefer branded but does depend where I am. Morrison's own brand greek yog is nice as is Aldi's. Apparently Müller do Aldi's yogurt for them.

I eat branded chocolate usually but Aldi Choceur is pretty good. I only eat Whole Earth Crunchy Peanut Butter. The price is hideous though.

Itsnotmesothere · 31/05/2019 09:19

Crikey that's long. Sorry thought I paragraphed it Blush

Fraxion · 31/05/2019 09:23

Method laundry liquid. I stock up when it's on offer and Fairy Liquid Platinum. Although Aldi's version of the platinum is quite good.

SerenDippitty · 31/05/2019 09:23

Morrison's own brand greek yog is nice as is Aldi's.

I find Fage nicer than Morrison’s own brand. I have the fat free version and it’s delicious.

Blobby10 · 31/05/2019 09:27

Branded:
Fairy liquid
Fairy non-bio washing powder - all children has sensitive skin as babies so used this or Persil and the habit has stuck, even though they are adults!
Andrex toilet roll - own brand just disintegrates unless you use twice as much so a false economy

Own brands I buy depends on the sugar/salt compared to the branded version as much as the price. I'm generally only shopping for me and occasionally one other person these days so whilst I have to economise as much as possible, it isn't down to the wire stuff. Do buy own brand biscuits and chocolate though and discounted branded stuff from B & M when I go in!

OP I'm agog that you can buy frozen mashed potato and frozen roast potatoes! Do they really taste better than cooking from fresh? Surely they take the same time in the oven?

Own brand:

Fraxion · 31/05/2019 09:28

My only thing I am really stuck on is my cleaning products, they have to be method

Me too for cleaning products.

my2bundles · 31/05/2019 09:29

Tea has to be tetley
Ketchup has to be heinz
Pasta sauce has to be home pride
Everything else asda own brands.

Itsnotmesothere · 31/05/2019 09:29

SerenDippity I used to love Fage. But I find my tastes have changed and it's too chalky for me now. I only use it if I make tzatziki.

UbbesPonytail · 31/05/2019 09:44

I’m not fussed about brands at all except for Clipper tea and Warbuton’s toastie bread. I can’t eat wholewheat and avoid bread in general so it’s my occasional treat.

But a lot of supermarket own brand truly is the exact same product as a branded version. Aldi in particular.

And some things, like baked beans, I go for the cheapest as they are lower salt and sugar.

Fraxion · 31/05/2019 09:51

Andrex toilet roll - own brand just disintegrates unless you use twice as much so a false economy

We buy M&S toilet roll , find it less bitty than Andrex
