To remind iPhone 10 users not to try reboot their phone this way! Am mortified!

So my phone had a weird glitch today where the screen froze on a particular warning box. I could see the home screen behind the box but was totally unresponsive.

I tried rebooting the phone by pressing volume button and the off button together, phone started to make a siren type noise.... followed by 4 calls from an unknown number which I couldn't answer because the screen was frozen.

Within 5 minutes I had a police van outside and 2 huge policemen with tasers knocking on the door. I apologised profusely and they came and searched the house before leaving. They were really nice and understanding but I felt like a right idiot. Just mortified for wasting their time.

For future reference if you hold down the volume button and the on/off button it contacts the emergency services. If you are ever in a situation where you need help but cannot speak you need to know this!

If you are a dickhead who has frozen your phone you need to press up volume, down volume quickly and then hold down on/off button.

Bloody hell

ShockShockShock

Louise190 · 30/05/2019 19:02

This applies to all iPhones! They have an Emergency feature. However I didn't know it actually contacted the emergency services!!

BasilBooBoo · 30/05/2019 19:03

Why did they search your house?

cricketmum84 · 30/05/2019 19:06

To make sure there was nobody in danger. I suppose if you think about it there could be someone hiding who has told me to just get rid of them!

cricketmum84 · 30/05/2019 19:07

@Louise190 I could be wrong but I think it's only iPhone 10/X and upwards where the old reboot procedure (holding down volume and on button) is now the emergency call!

Fucking hell Op! I didn't know that either, how scary for you!

MyGastIsFlabbered · 30/05/2019 19:09

My phone did this unexpectedly yesterday while I was driving. Scared the bloody life out of me. I was in my boyfriend's car and I think his phone holder was pressing the side button.

CarolsBiggestFan · 30/05/2019 19:09

Wow, the police in my area can barely be arsed responding to or investigating an actual real crime as it actually happens.

5 minutes response time you say? Won’t bother with 999 in future, I’ll just try this instead Hmm

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 30/05/2019 19:11

I somehow called the emergency services when my alarm went off the other morning. I could then hear a voice and kept saying ‘Alexa stop’. After a while shouting at ‘Alexa’ I woke properly and looked at my phone- I’d phoned the emergency services and was on a call to them for 27 seconds. They didn’t phone back or turn up at the house! 🙈

cricketmum84 · 30/05/2019 19:12

Yup 5 minutes between the last attempt to call which was 5 minutes after the emergency call.

I was very shocked at the response time. Leaves me feeling a bit safer though knowing how quick they can get here when they think it's serious. When my teenage son went missing in a very poor mental state it was 90 minutes before they could get anyone out.

What a stupid idea to replace a previous existing function with that.

i'm a police officer and seriously don't be mortified, this happens a lot!

strawberrypenguin · 30/05/2019 19:19

I thought iPhone reset was home button and off button together. Don't think rest involved volume button
Useful to know what that does though!

SolitudeAtAltitude · 30/05/2019 19:19

This is an urban myth

Like typing in your pin code backwards...

cricketmum84 · 30/05/2019 19:22

Thanks @1moreRep. They were really lovely and said themselves that it happens a lot with kids playing with phones etc.

My DH was a bit Shock though when they took him to one side to ask if we "had a barny". He was like - are you kidding I'm more scared of her! 😂

@SolitudeAtAltitude erm no it's not an urban myth.

IPhone 8 onwards has this feature. I’ve done it too. If your phone is not frozen it does offer a cancel slide bar. You can turn the feature off so it doesn’t auto dial. Look in settings under 🆘

Gth1234 · 30/05/2019 19:24

Who would know a cheap iPhone would do that? Phones are always snooping on us.

Stick with android, I think.

Removable battery is even better. Then you can restart it, no worries.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 30/05/2019 19:24

Apologies, looks like I was wrong Shock

Ontheboardwalk · 30/05/2019 19:25

Ah this makes sense. I was putting my iPhone into the holder in the car (I Bluetooth my tunes from it) and it started doing a siren noise saying 'alert calling 112, alert calling 112'

I switched it off as soon as I could and thankfully never got a call back

I don’t have a home button how do I reset if it bricks. I'll need to google that

cricketmum84 · 30/05/2019 19:26

@Ontheboardwalk volume up, volume down, hold down just side on/off button

OP posts:
origamiunicorn · 30/05/2019 19:26

Well that's just great, on my current phone that's screenshot! Shock

IHeartArya · 30/05/2019 19:27

The new rebooting of iPhones is so stupid. I’m always getting it wrong. The old way was much easier.
