I keep getting thrush and BV

I'm a size 18 and aware I could be at risk of type 2 diabetes. I only have this as a symptom though. Doctor wont check for diabetes and just keeps telling me to use over the counter medicines which cost a shit load and dont really work. I did get 1 course of anti biotics but it has come back since then. I'm exasperated. I do everything else right, I stopped using panty liners, condoms and shower gel down there. I now just use canesten wash. I started eating yogurt every day. I dont know what else to do. Help!

You can get diabetes test at the pharmacy I think.

BlueJava · 30/05/2019 18:24

Are you sure you drink enough plain water OP? I have also heard cranberry juice helps. In the past I've had cranberry juice but put water with it as I find it quite strong and sweet.

DoNotDisturbPlease · 30/05/2019 18:24

Is it going to cost loads though? I am actually overdrawn from propping up canestens share price recently.

I genuinely drink 3 litres of water a day, always have done.

Insist on a diabetes test. I had exactly the same issue as you and as soon as I was diagnosed as diabetic and given appropriate treatment, it completely cleared.

Twinkledontinkle · 30/05/2019 18:27

You do know that you don’t EAT the yoghurt to help the thrush, right?

Just double checking as my DP didn’t know.

cookiechomper · 30/05/2019 18:27

Have you had an examination and had it confirmed that it is definitley thrush and BV and not other infections e.g. a water infection? Could be that you're using the wrong stuff.

HostessTrolley · 30/05/2019 18:27

Most hospitals have a sexual health clinic with by-appointment sessions and walk in sessions. If the gp is being less than helpful I’d suggest going to see them. They might be more likely to do a swab or investigate whether there’s something else going on x

ShitAtScarbble · 30/05/2019 18:28

Eliminate all sugar from your diet for a while and see if that helps. All sugar - not just refined sugar so that means honey, fruit sugar, excess carbs etc. Should do the trick.

NoBaggyPants · 30/05/2019 18:28

I'd go to the GU/ sexual health clinic. Also, is your partner being treated?

WoahMySocksAreOnFire · 30/05/2019 18:29

I had exactly the same issue (except I’m a size 12 so o don’t think it’s weight related).

Persistent thrush and BV since I was 19. I gained a bit of weight so went on the Keto diet which eliminates most carbs... many of which for me revolves around eating wheat/bread. When I cut out wheat it stopped completely, so I can only assume I had a build of yeast in my body causing the yeast infections.

Try cutting out all products with yeast and see if it makes a difference

Alsohuman · 30/05/2019 18:29

Water infections don’t itch like buggery. When you’ve got thrush there’s no mistaking it - you want to rip your fanjo off.

BuildBuildings · 30/05/2019 18:29

You need to see another GP or demand further investigation. Way too often doctors let you suffer with minor stuff like this. But it's not minor when it's all the time. I know! It's really odd they won't test for diabetes.

DoNotDisturbPlease · 30/05/2019 18:29

Ok to answer questions. I've been told eating natural yogurt every day helps with the probiotics or something and stops it happening? I didn't know I also had to put yogurt on my foof!

Sounds like it could be diabetes related then, did you have any other symptoms @curly45 ?

I've had no examinations etc they've just asked me my symptoms etc then advised over the counter X medicine or once I got given anti biotics.

Is your sexual partner also using thrush treatment at the same time that you are? Otherwise you will keep being reinfected.

WoahMySocksAreOnFire · 30/05/2019 18:30

Also I’ve been tested for diabetes several times and I’m fine... but a wheat/yeast intolerance has very similar symptoms e.g. spikes in blood sugar, tiredness after eating, recurring thrush

MatildaTheCat · 30/05/2019 18:31

Really deep seated thrush doesn’t respond to OTC treatment IME. It calms it down but doesn’t completely destroy it.

Ask for a week long course of pessaries and cream and use religiously. If you get BV again you should ask for pessaries alongside antibiotics.

I suffered from thrush for years and it’s absolutely hideous. I read a study on it and persuaded my GP to give me a longer course and then one pessary every two weeks for a few months. It worked and never came back.

DoNotDisturbPlease · 30/05/2019 18:32

My diet could definitely improve. Evening meals are fine but during the day I usually have a croissant most mornings as breakfast (I know!) And then a sandwich and crisps for lunch sometimes with a choc muffin etc. I know that's so bad I definitely need to change that but this is why I'm starting to worry about diabetes. Obviously it will have been my own fault but I'd rather just know Blush

My husband has just said to me today he has it on his penis so must be thrush this time. Previously he hasn't suffered and/or we've abstained from sex for a bit but we stopped using condoms In case they were upsetting my delicate internal fanjo balance. And now he has thrush too Blush hes just going to get some cream tonight but I'll need to see the gp I think.

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 30/05/2019 18:34

My friend had this for a year - her husband wasn’t treated so they just passed it back and forth.

You both need to be treated first of all, abstain from sex for a couple of weeks and then see if you get an improvement.

If not deffo a GUM clinic - they’re better if you’ve got a duff GP.

Merryoldgoat · 30/05/2019 18:36

Previously he hasn't suffered

Men can be asymptomatic but still be contagious.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 30/05/2019 18:39

Do you have baths? I have had this too (and am not diabetic). I cleared it with a course of pessarys every other day for about 10 days I think, but it returns without fail if I have a bath or take a course of antibiotics.

ryanreynolds · 30/05/2019 18:43

Agree with others up the thread that it could be linked to diet. I get thrush when I've had a couple of days of pigging out on all the bad stuff - worse if I've also been drinking.

Google yeast free diet and also try that?

user1486131602 · 30/05/2019 18:44

You can get a free diabetes test at any Lloyd’s chemist, just make an apt!
Probiotic yoghurt needs to go IN your food as well and if hubby suffering on his willy as well. (Overnight)

Cotton only underwear, do not use perfumed soap and make sure you rinse well! Do not have hot baths!
Sorry for the bluntness, suffered for ages, went to GUM for tests but finally worked out what was best by trial and error. Good luck! Nothing worse than being uncomfortable 😣

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/05/2019 18:44

Have you:
Stopped wearing tights
Only wear cotton underwear
Made sure you don't sit down all day
Limit hot baths
Stopped crossing your legs
No underwear at night
Freshen up after sex
