I keep getting thrush and BV

I'm a size 18 and aware I could be at risk of type 2 diabetes. I only have this as a symptom though. Doctor wont check for diabetes and just keeps telling me to use over the counter medicines which cost a shit load and dont really work. I did get 1 course of anti biotics but it has come back since then. I'm exasperated. I do everything else right, I stopped using panty liners, condoms and shower gel down there. I now just use canesten wash. I started eating yogurt every day. I dont know what else to do. Help!

Eliminate all sugar from your diet for a while and see if that helps. All sugar - not just refined sugar so that means honey, fruit sugar, excess carbs etc. Should do the trick.

Please don't do this, you'd be opening the door to serious hypoglycaemia. You can buy a BM machine from Amazon for around £20 btw - Bayer, Roche and Medtronic are good brands.

PeoniesarePink · 30/05/2019 18:54

I had constant thrush before being diagnosed with T2 diabetes.

It's such a relief to have not had it for years since.

Most pharmacies will do a diabetes test for you. Or book an appointment with your practice nurse?

muppet1969 · 30/05/2019 18:59

I got 4 weeks of itraconasol from a private gp - best money spent ever! And cheaper than constant canestan. Have always had persistent episodes but def worse since peri-menopause.... sigh

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 30/05/2019 19:01

Are you treating your dp too? If not you are giving back and forth to each other- it will never go. As for the LIVE yoghurt- you dip it in a tampon.......

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/05/2019 19:10

Iron your knickers.

It's a life changer.

grupple · 30/05/2019 19:11

Diabetes test strips on Amazon for £2, would give you a rough idea.

firesong · 30/05/2019 19:12

In the past my partner had to be treated every time I had it. Otherwise I got it again

DoNotDisturbPlease · 30/05/2019 19:13

I do sit down all day in a demanding job which is why I've also been eating shit. I'm taking steps to sort that out and being more organised in the evenings to prep food for the next day.

Ok on the case of treating my husband - can he take canesten? He usually just uses the cream and it goes.

I dont have baths, I dont wear clothes at night and I always try and air the area out as much as possible. My work trousers are tight in that area and awful material but I have to wear them. Maybe a bigger size or will improve with weight loss.

Thanks for the tip about Lloyd's pharmacy I will try that first. I will also make a GP appt - I did once do a swab which came back "borderline" but borderline to what I have no idea?! No explanation was given or any follow up suggested.

Why would ironing my knickers help?!

As others have said, apply the natural yogurt to your fanny

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/05/2019 19:19

Because it kills off the fungal infection on them?

JasperHale · 30/05/2019 19:20

I second kefir over yogurt.

Oh, and try to find walk in sexual health clinic. My GP was treating me for thrush when I was pregnant, it took forever, I went to one and they found out it was something totally different. Disappeared within 2 days.

StCharlotte · 30/05/2019 19:21

I am T2 and had thrush on and off for years. Had no idea the two were related until relatively recently. Was diet controlled - not very well it seems as they put me on Metformin. "The Itch" disappeared almost overnight. (I've now been put on another med ehich apparently can cause thrush Angry)

In terms of relief, I would put natural yoghurt on some loo roll and wipe. Maybe put some on a panty liner if I didn't have to go anywhere.

Also Vagisil do intimate soothing wipes. They are AMAZING!

Neighneigh · 30/05/2019 19:23

I had recurring thrush, it was the most annoying thing ever. I got a prescription for one pessary every night for five days - they are the lower rate dose than otc but it's the length of time you use them that helps. I've only had it once since. Also you don't have to buy branded Canesten btw, there are generic versions (by Teva etc) which are a fair bit cheaper.

Peperpiperpickedwrong · 30/05/2019 19:23

Regardless of if he has had symptoms or not yours will have cleared up then he will have passed it back to you. You both should have been treated. A lot of chemists do diabetes checks these days. Your GP sounds crap!

www.lloydspharmacy.com/en/info/type-2-diabetes-testing

Cheaper thrush treatment here: Canesten is an expensive brand but the generic treatments have the same active ingredients. Tablets are Fluconazole, cream is Clotrimazole.

ViolentBrutishAndShort · 30/05/2019 19:25

Antibiotic promote yeast though! It kills off your friendly bacteria.

Stop eating sugar and carbs for a few weeks. That along with Canesten tablet and pessary will change your life and your partner needs treatment too.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 30/05/2019 19:25

Cut down/out sugar. Things will dramatically improve, I promise.

Rose220 · 30/05/2019 19:26

I used to suffer a lot so I tried pro biotic so I started drinking activia drinks everyday and now it's all gone and has not come back.

Rose220 · 30/05/2019 19:30

Sorry it was actimel drinks everyday x

Missingstreetlife · 30/05/2019 19:32

Blood test for sugar levels, may not be diabetes but they should check.
Cranberry is for cystitis. Once has oral lamisol for toenail infection, cleared every bit of fungal infection incl dandruff, but not good for your liver.
Change bed clothes, towels everything. This lives in your gut, put canestan on your bottom and wipe from front to back. Keep using for a few days after it's cleared. Are you on the pill? Good luck, it's horrid.

prettyinpink23x · 30/05/2019 19:36

In boots you can get a blood sugar monitor and strips and test your blood first thing in the morning to see what your fasting sugar is. Then you can see if it is too high and also can test 2 hours after eating to see the effect your food has. If it is too high then show the results to your doctor who should then arrange a hba1c test.
