I have no idea if this is typical but he just tweeted that London isn't an English city any more
What is it then pray tell? What's not English about it??

Immigration is not to blame for rising house prices

In the UK, it's housebuilders holding onto land and releasing houses at a rate deliberately designed to push prices upwards. As explained to us when we were touring new builds recently (they are really shit, aren't they ?)

We don't have a housing crisis the UK. We do have a greed one.

SuziQ10 · 30/05/2019 17:50

I'm English, non-white and living in London and completely agree with him.
There can't be a rational, civilised discussion about this issue when anyone who questions it gets shouted down as racist. Lots of those people might be. Many of them are not. It's a valid opinion and one that should open a dialogue.

Agree with this. I have mixed heritage myself. I live in an area of London where the majority don't speak English as a first language. You'll have heard of my area, it's on the news a lot due to so many stabbing and crime. 80% of my child's school peers don't speak English as a first language and 40% of those don't speak basic English when starting reception. Ofsted seem to monitor the school closely and the statistics increase year in year. I choose to stay here because of the positive things about the multicultural, diverse area. There are also many negatives and we can't talk about them.

“Nothing to do with colour, everything to do with shared values, culture and institutions.” And that’s so easy to see because you base it on colour. Or JC and his chums do.

BertrandRussell · 30/05/2019 17:53

“There are also many negatives and we can't talk about them.”

Of course you can! People do it all the time!

LateVictorian · 30/05/2019 17:54

John Cleese never mentioned anything about skin colour - so are you assuming you have to be white to be English?

Being English/British is a culture it doesn't matter what skin colour you are.

BertrandRussell · 30/05/2019 17:56

“John Cleese never mentioned anything about skin colour”

They often don’t.

lolaflores · 30/05/2019 17:58

London isn't Britian. It's a theme park for the wealthy mostly

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/05/2019 17:59

Doesn’t feel like a bloody theme park. Where’s my candy floss?

BertrandRussell · 30/05/2019 18:01

“London isn't Britian. It's a theme park for the wealthy mostly”

I think you might be thinking of the “Burlington Arcade” rather than “London”......

LateVictorian · 30/05/2019 18:01

I don't know why London has changed so much as there doesnt seem to be any explination but the crime waves seems to be getting worse whether it's to do with immigration or not. It needs adressing as it's heart breaking to hear all these stabbings, gangs, murders, robbery ect

dreichuplands · 30/05/2019 18:03

Mexico city
Is a good example of how complex national identity is. Superficially it looks so Mexican that mango lists it as an example of a city being it's authentic self.
As a pp points out they actually speak Spanish and invaders language. Except many don't, not as a first language, they will speak their own native language.
But you won't hear this, partly because the more indigenous your background the less chance you have at education and decent employment.
There are huge cultural divides across Mexico. The wealthier you are the more Spanish your background is likely to be. You are one of the many maids used by the middle class much more likely to have an indigenous Indian background and speak Spanish as a second language.
It is easy to make assumptions about other countries but many have complicated histories and presents.

KeplerExoplanets · 30/05/2019 18:05

He is an immigrant himself, the fucking twat!

What? Confused

IsabellaLinton · 30/05/2019 18:09

No arguments so resorts to mindless insults. Yawn.

LateVictorian · 30/05/2019 18:11

Immigration is not to blame for rising house prices.

the fault lies with investors buying houses to speculate with and businesses like AirBnB. A fair amount of houses in Amsterdam sit empty, because of it. You will never see any immigrants or people born Dutch in them*

Partly agree but the population of this country has grown considerable fast and people are in more of a demand for housing ect.

IsabellaLinton · 30/05/2019 18:12

@LateVictorian

The Met doesn’t police anymore. If they were back on the streets, preventing crime from happening in the first place and providing a visible representation of law and order instead of sitting behind desks responding to online crime reports, we’d all be the happier for it. But they won’t do it.

PrincessTiggerlily · 30/05/2019 18:15

if many people have different beliefs and culture, so aren't going to intermarry and blend with the existing society, what you have is lots of small communities leading utterly different lives. And whoever is the most powerful or rich groups could end up being targeted by those with less resources.
Is it that those lauding diversity are probably left wing with minimal religion. Britain still has a tricky relationship with Catholicism after hundreds of years .
I think the bring it on diversity is great crew are naive.

SuziQ10 · 30/05/2019 18:18

*“There are also many negatives and we can't talk about them.”

Honestly can't! My very leftie, mixed heritage family and leftie multi cultural friendship group would think I was racist / saying something that's not allowed if I was to speak about the negatives of multiculturalism in this area of London. I couldn't speak about it in RL. It's just not done and I'd be branded a facist or something.

LateVictorian · 30/05/2019 18:18

If there was more policing I believe crime would be lowered but not considerably.

The punishments are to low in the UK, I have seen first hand Police being assaulted by gangs and groups.

Then the gangs get the police done for assaulting them and people being cocky and filming there arrest.
Bringing back stronger punishments for example has lowered down acid attacks ect.

dreichuplands · 30/05/2019 18:21

Currently living in the US, plenty of strong punishments even more crimes. The threat of being shot dead by the police does less than you might think to promote law and order.
The 40% black male youth unemployment/ no education is a stronger push to create crime than being killed is a deterrent.

@LateVictorian

My DH has been attacked with knives, baseball bats, paint, petrol, chains, samurai swords... the list goes on. It’s terrifying Sad

But they’re so hampered in what they can do. They’re powerless against ‘moped muggers’ as they can’t chase them if they’re not wearing crash helmets, for example, and half the perpetrators they arrest are never brought to justice or given custodial sentences. It’s all such a mess that I honestly despair. Anyway, sorry for digressing.

HeresMe · 30/05/2019 18:27

For a lot you calling racist out, I worked with a lovely chap from Nigeria, who came here and was very disappointed with his experience of England. And for the accusers his skin colour wasn't white.

London hasn't bee true England or Britain for years.

MangoFeverDream · 30/05/2019 18:33

Must have been a handy coincidence that when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in South America they found the people already spoke Spanish. Otherwise they might have been forced to undertake a bloody programme of genocide to ensure they did ....

Think you’ll find most global cities (the ones that have a strategic location) have had a genocidal massacre or two in their history, at least. Not understanding what you’re trying to say. Mexico City is not unique in that regard (or Constantinople Istanbul for that matter)

LateVictorian · 30/05/2019 18:38

@LateVictorian

Omg that's awful so sorry to hear that!x

It is utterly terrifying and heart breaking to hear the crime and people being killed.

It's why people are getting fed up with it. The criminal justice system, the policing nothing seems to be getting done!

I have noticed alot of people in my area turning to Far Right groups and vigilantism which is actually getting more scary and more popular and more violent. It's very worrying.

LateVictorian · 30/05/2019 19:17

Sorry meant at
