No shit Sherlock. Hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist the damage he's done.

Politicians can actually be put on trial for lying now

There are going to need a bigger courtroom.

I doubt this will go anywhere because if it did then they would have to take to court a long long list of MPs past and present

Gth1234 · 29/05/2019 15:44

of course he didn't; lie. This is a ridiculous case.

We pay a net £13bn to the EU. That's £250m a week as far as I can see. Maybe they used different numbers. It's a lot, and we could spend it however we want.

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2019 15:46

He will come out of this untouched. Like trump he can do what the hell he likes

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2019 15:47

But if he gets out unscathed I hope he is held to the provision of 350m a week to the NHS.

LakieLady · 29/05/2019 15:47

I wonder if his estranged wife will give evidence? I'm sure she'd have a lot to say about his honesty and integrity. Grin

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2019 15:49

Can anyone who also has bbc news app suggest why this didn't count as breaking news?
Horse wins sodding grand national apparently was.

GreyofSunshine · 29/05/2019 15:52

@Gth1234

The link you posted says 13bn is our gross contribution; the net is 8.9bn.

GreyofSunshine · 29/05/2019 15:53

ANd of course, we'll generally have less to spend when our economy shrinks upon leaving.

CatsWearingHats · 29/05/2019 15:58

Gth1234
of course he didn't; lie.

Grin Thanks for the best laugh I've had all day.

He's a scumbag..utter, utter shit of a man.

The fact that he is in a position where he could be the PM shows how far the standards of common decency have fallen in society.

He should have been expelled from the Conservative party for incited racial hatred, islamaphobia, fraud ,endangering British citizens, conspiracy to commit assault..the list goes on.

But no, here is good old Boris , promising the undeliverable ' No Deal' that nobody voted for and favourite for the top job on top of that.

I hate him more than Farage, and that's saying something.

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2019 15:58

He didn't lie?!
I absolutely despair

Kaddm · 29/05/2019 16:12

I dislike bojo more than Farage. At least Farage’s objective is crystal clear, no matter how much some of us may dislike that objective.

Bojo is a big factor in the country voting Brexit. It was close and actions like his swung it. He made a drama of coming out and saying which side he was on, split the Tory voters (because you can assume a good chunk of them would have done as Cameron advised and voted to stay) and then once Brexit was voted for and Cameron went, he didn’t step up and deal with it because he knew it would be chaos. All along, he has just been about himself, his ego and wrapped up with that, political ambition. Giving precisely no shits about the people this is fucking over or the total ridiculous waste of 2 years spent on brexit whilst our core services like health and education go down the bog.

If he became PM I’d be embarrassed to be British.

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2019 16:13

"he didn’t step up and deal with it because he knew it would be chaos"
And because he's a great big chicken. A micious, lying one.

ginghamstarfish · 29/05/2019 16:13

What about all the other lying politicians? Tony Blair for example?

Kaddm · 29/05/2019 16:15

Oh yes and that’s saying nothing about his morals and ethics in his personal life. I don’t know the ins and outs of it but it certainly belongs on the Jeremy Kyle show and sets a crap example for anybody.

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2019 16:16

There were calls for him to be tried for war crimes.
Does "other people do it too" really wipe the slate clean in British politics. Urgh.

Kaddm · 29/05/2019 16:16

What about the other lying ones? This one is set to become PM so is most relevant.

x2boys · 29/05/2019 16:26

Tony Blair was PM when he was lying about weapons of mass destruction.....

rattusrattus20 · 29/05/2019 16:29

this sort of thing has to be used very carefully.

anything that even vaguely plausibly might be correct, even totally unprovable/very dodgy stuff [e.g. "tax cuts for the rich will lead to job creation", "human beings will find an answer to climate change", "god is real"] should be well outside the scope of this sort of thing.

genuine mistakes should also, obviously, be in the clear [e.g. diane abbot drivelling out random numbers in response to a question].

but, yeah, in the case of an outright, unquestionable lie about somethin really important, sure, this doesn't feel at all unreasonable.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 29/05/2019 16:31

Hopefully this will 'Stop Boris' once and for all

Sadly, I don't think it will make any difference. We live in a world where a recording surfaced of the President of the United States openly admitting that he sexually assaults women and nothing happened to him. Rich, white men can and will be forgiven anything.

Unfinishedkitchen · 29/05/2019 16:31

When will he be tried for the fraud that was the garden bridge which cost taxpayers £53m without a brick being laid?

BoneyBackJefferson · 29/05/2019 16:37

1/ he's a politician

2/ Just FYI, the bloke that is doing also wanted to take 2 other leavers and 3 remainers to court as well.

VenusOfWillendorf · 29/05/2019 16:40

"Alternative Facts". It will just be brushed off as they waste even more money. Its utterly depressing ... rich white men as previous posters have said.

Bluntness100 · 29/05/2019 16:44

I posted on the other thread on this.

It's clear he lied. He knew it wasn't 350 million or close, as he also explained the numbers accurately at other times before and after.

My gut feeling is he has to be held accountable. Politicians can't lie to the general public like this, and certainly not over something as huge as brexit.

Some of them are giving it well it's only being brought as he will stand for pm. Damn right it is. And so what? It doesn't change what he did and becomes even more important he is held accountable if he wishes to be prime minister.

Rees mogg is giving it courts can't get involved with politicians as sometimes they exaggerate etc, but that to me says he thinks it's ok to lie if the end justifies the means.

It's not. For the sake of british politics and the integrity of our political system I personally believe he needs to be held accountable.

familycourtq · 29/05/2019 17:10

I am no fan of Boris but you can't seriously expect courts to decide what is a lie in the context of politics.

I've heard politicians make all sorts of claims, many of which I consider lies but 99% actually depend on how you look at the facts.

Boris has told a lot of lies but he very very far from alone.

Are we having a trial for Osbourne and his claim we'd have to have an immediate punishment budget the day after the referendum if we voted to leave?
