To give my 18 month old Rice Krispies for breakfast?

Have been giving my 18 month old Rice Krispies (it own brand) for breakfast. Had a friend to stay with her two (one younger, one slightly older) who was horrified he had cereal for breakfast, saying how much sugar is in it.
AIBU to give him this for breakfast? Feeling a bit bad now.

It's fine. 'Horrified'? She needs to bloody grow up.

HolesinTheSoles · 29/05/2019 07:46

It's not awful so I definitely wouldn't clutch my pearls over it. You could always switch to porridge (and fruit if you can be bothered) though which would be a bit better.

loveskaka · 29/05/2019 07:47

My 18month old has weetabix and rice crispy aswell

Bananarama12 · 29/05/2019 07:47

Can you try porridge or weetabix instead? You could add fruit to it. Rice crispies does have a lot of sugar in.

Sexnotgender · 29/05/2019 07:47

It wouldn’t be what I would choose to give but it’s not the worst cereal.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 29/05/2019 07:47

I think the nutritional content of cereal is usually about as high as the box it comes in, but if it fills them up and they eat healthily otherwise I think it's OK, maybe mix it up with some other options too? Mine often have porridge, toast (homemade bread before anyone starts banging on about the sugar in that), fruit and I do offer cereal too.

NabooThatsWho · 29/05/2019 07:47

Your friend must be a pearl-clutching MNer.
It’s cereal, not heroin.

Etihad · 29/05/2019 07:47

If you were giving him a big bowl of Frosties with milkshake and a couple of spoons of sugar on top - then yes YABU.

Rice Krispies only have a tiny bit of sugar in. Your friend is being utterly ridiculous.

Hangingtrousers · 29/05/2019 07:48

Seriously!? Its not like he is having a doughtnut for breakfast daily!!!
Mine love rice Krispies!

guiltynetter · 29/05/2019 07:48

Id try and alternate it with others things as they are quite high in sugar, my DD loves them so I just try a couple of times a week and the rest she has porridge , weetabix etc.

horrified though?! crazy.

TwittleBee · 29/05/2019 07:50

My doctor actually encouraged that we switch to cereal from our usual daily porridge as cereals are fortified with vitamins whereas oats aren't...

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 29/05/2019 07:50

I wouldn't give cereals. In my view they're sugary, low nutrition and not very filling. But it's not like a big of crips and can of coke and I would never say anything to someone else

Jinglejanglefish · 29/05/2019 07:51

Sounds a bit dramatic but I do think cereal is a pretty crap breakfast when there are so many nutritious options available.

fairybeagle · 29/05/2019 07:52

Ok thanks, glad I'm not way off on this! He was having porridge for a long time but he's not a big eater so I got sick of making it to just end up throwing it out.
I will add weetabix and porridge again to mix it up.

I give mine Cheerios. Seems alright.

Beldon · 29/05/2019 07:52

It’s not the worst offender (eg coco pops etc) but does contain sugar, think it’s 2.5- 3g for a cup full. Wheatabix is lower in sugar. Just depends on rest of diet I guess.

GPatz · 29/05/2019 07:53

It's one of the cereal's provide by my nursery, along with Weetabix, Cornflakes and Toast.

herculepoirot2 · 29/05/2019 07:53

Porridge 🤢 I can’t eat it, myself. I’m not prepared to give processed meat every day, or just toast. Granolas and mueslis have even more sugar than bran or similar wholewheat cereals.

Lana1234 · 29/05/2019 07:54

I wouldn’t choose it myself but I certainly don’t think it’s horrifying

Beldon · 29/05/2019 07:56

I do think your friend is weird to be ‘horrified’ about it though. I’d be more inclined to ditch the friend than the rice crispies - she sounds like she will have comments to make about every parenting decision you make that differs from her perfect mothering

herculepoirot2 · 29/05/2019 07:57

Plus, how rude is your friend? You don’t go to someone’s house as a guest and start criticising the food. Shock

Chippychipsforme · 29/05/2019 07:58

It's fine. Its not like a bowl of Coco pops and frosties mixed together (my husband's dream breakfast)

thisisthetime · 29/05/2019 08:03

It does have a fair amount of sugar and not a lot of nutrition but I wouldn’t worry about someone else feeding it to their kids. My dc have a box every so often. How about an omelette? Really quick, add Parmesan or cheddar cheese and is an alternative to cereal a few times a week.

fairybeagle · 29/05/2019 08:05

@Chippychipsforme that sounds amazing, I would eat it myself 🤣

An omelette is going to take about four times the time a bowl of RK is going to take.
