To give my 18 month old Rice Krispies for breakfast?

Have been giving my 18 month old Rice Krispies (it own brand) for breakfast. Had a friend to stay with her two (one younger, one slightly older) who was horrified he had cereal for breakfast, saying how much sugar is in it.
AIBU to give him this for breakfast? Feeling a bit bad now.

How are rice crispies non-nutritious? Surely they’re carbohydrates and added vitamins and minerals?
Mumsnet is so weird about food!
OP wouldn’t trust mumsnet for advice on feeding children!

Kokeshi123 · 29/05/2019 09:32

Amazed by the number of MNers who do cooked breakfasts every morning!

waterandmilk · 29/05/2019 09:33

@Kokeshi123 from their home grown veggies and chickens

littlemeitslyn · 29/05/2019 09:42

Can I have a big of crips please

Yabbers · 29/05/2019 09:53

We have Rice Krispies and fruit here.

freshasthebrightbluesky · 29/05/2019 09:58

You gave your dc Rice Krispies for breakfast? OMG! 😱

Tell your friend to unclench fgs

This reminds me of when a comedian was on about all bran: "So what if it has the same amount of fibre as a whole field of potatoes? Shove a laxative in bowl of sugarsnaps and enjoy yourself for once!" I'm obviously not recommending this as a viable option for your toddler but you, and your dc, do need to enjoy what you eat and there's nothing actually wrong with a bowl of Rice Krispies apart from a bit of sugar.

SilentSister · 29/05/2019 10:00

I used to put TWO desert spoons of sugar on my rice krispies when I was a child. Oh, the horror. I also used to eat a jam donut and drink a pint of milk when I came home from school. Clutches heart for fear of dying.

hellooosweetheart · 29/05/2019 10:39

Rice Krispies are fine but your LO will be hungry 30 mins later because they are really just puffs of air. Maybe try some granola instead to fill them up a bit? Just remove the nuts of youre worried about choking.

RosemaryRemember · 29/05/2019 10:45

I put them on top of other more filling cereal, as a sort of garnish!

The poster who mentions they are fortified, do check the boxes. Ime not all sorts have the same fortifying vitamins, Vitamin D for example is not in them all.

It's not too late to grass your parents up to Social Services SilentSister Grin

TheSheepofWallSt · 29/05/2019 10:54

I give mine a fag and a can of Strongbow.

MollyHuaCha · 29/05/2019 10:59

It's absolutely fine. Go ahead.

ToffeePennie · 29/05/2019 11:11

My 18 month old had chocolate pillows for breakfast. Followed by chocolate weetabix. Oh the shame and horror.
Screw her. She’s obviously not a good friend.
Oh and because it’s half term my kids are allowed to eat chocolate cereal, normally they have porridge with frozen fruit. And a banana.

Aprillygirl · 29/05/2019 12:00

As long as you're not adding sugar I don't think rice krispies are that bad are they? My main concern would be that they're not very substantial so would perhaps offer a banana too.

I wish I could get my twins to eat any cereals, they’re 19mo and they were given Peanut Butter and Jam on toast ONCE by my mum for breakfast one day and now they have decided that’s all they will eat... I’ve tried to make it as healthy as possible (wholegrain bread, no added sugar pb and j) but still wish they’d eat anything else. I think DS is thankfully starting to get bored of it (got some scrambled eggs down him this morning!) but DD shows no sign of stopping. But they’re healthy, decent enough weight wise (still a little underweight for their age but they were very premature at birth and neither under 1kg in weight) so I go with the “at least they’re eating” mantra, does it worry me? Yes. Is it okay that they get so much sugar at breakfast? My HV said yes so I try not to let it get to me.

Rice crispies do have a lot of sugar when compare to wholegrain cereals, but they’re not the worst culprit either so your friend could do with getting a grip IMO Grin

PhillipeFellope · 29/05/2019 13:09

Its not like a bowl of Coco pops and frosties mixed together

Breakfast of champions Grin I have actually given this combination to my two year old, it's well nice!

KellyW88 · 29/05/2019 13:27

I meant both were under 1kg not neither! Brain fog! :’)

Chanandlersbong · 29/05/2019 17:31

She needs to get over herself. My 22mo won't start his day without his bowl of shreddies! I'd understand her horror if you were feeding doughnuts and biscuits every morning but it's cereal and rather plain cereal at that.

MaryShelley1818 · 29/05/2019 17:44

For goodness sake, it’s plain cereal. Perfectly reasonable breakfast option.

My 17mth old has toast and rice krispies for breakfast most days.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/05/2019 17:56

its cereal ffs

cereal is for breakie

Carpetburns · 29/05/2019 17:58

Don't lose any sleep over it, OP. My children prefer Frosted Sheddies please don't flame me.

3in4years · 29/05/2019 18:23

Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Reminds me when my friend came over when our kids were about 8 months old and saw I had Readybrek. She couldn't believe I'd feed my son 'that rubbish', until I showed her the ingredients. Oats. With added iron and vitamins. She was always looking to put me down.
There is nothing wrong with cereal for breakfast. It is not sugar or air. It is carbs and vitamins served with milk. No panic.

StoorieHoose · 29/05/2019 18:55

cereal is for breakie cereal is for any time of the day!!

rosybell · 29/05/2019 19:01

In our house my DC have rice krispies on days I tell them they need to make a healthy choice!

RollaCola84 · 29/05/2019 19:06

@RubberTreePlant I used to love Ricicles, wonder if they still make them....

@3in4years I still have Ready Brek as a 30 something because its quick and easy to make, and I like it. I had the same discussion with an instructor at the gym and a colleague who both sneeringly labelled it rubbish !
