To give my 18 month old Rice Krispies for breakfast?

Have been giving my 18 month old Rice Krispies (it own brand) for breakfast. Had a friend to stay with her two (one younger, one slightly older) who was horrified he had cereal for breakfast, saying how much sugar is in it.
AIBU to give him this for breakfast? Feeling a bit bad now.

It's fiiiiine. They've served rice krispies (along with other things) for breakfast in every nursery I've worked in. Including in the baby rooms.

Babynut1 · 29/05/2019 19:11

your friend is a knob!

LittleAndOften · 29/05/2019 19:14

Your friend is being ridiculous. DS (3) has a handful of dry cheerios or rice krispies shapes with some dried apricots and raisins, then marmite on toast. He eats about half of both, sometimes more. He's an incredibly fussy eater so I'm just thankful he's not stuck on something like sugar puffs! Not that I've even had those since 1993 Grin

Erm normally my 18m has rice krispies, shreddies, weetabix, cornflakes or porridge for breakfast and has done since about 10m! And she on the rare occasion has had cocopops too!

I do sometimes wonder if people get m mixed up with rice kirspies and risciklies. The seconed being the ones that coated in sugger as I once told a mum at baby group DD liked rice kirspies and seemed to think they where sugger coated.
Like others have said they are not the worst . DD had them along with chiroies and Raisin Wheats which are nice, but she didn't like to eat the same thing everyday so I need a veraity of options to be able to Liz's things up a bit.

MigGril · 29/05/2019 19:25

Sorry my spelling and grammar is terrible tonight along with auto correct. I hope that actually made sense.

ChristmasArmadillo · 29/05/2019 19:36

I’d probably be mildly internally horrified but I would never ever say anything. He’s your child not hers.

Rice Krispies are very near the bottom of the list, like MigGril I wonder if the pearl clutching judgey friend was actually thinking of Ricicles which are like Rice Krispies with a Frosties coating.. and would be stupid amounts of sugar (but arent on that list as far as I can see, do they even exist any more?)

MindfulBear · 29/05/2019 19:45

It's not the worst offending breakfast item about..... tbh in a rotation with other options it's perfectly fine.
And if it is all you can get your kids to eat at breakfast time then it's better than nothing -as part of an overall balanced diet!

My youngest does not like eating at breakfast time so I totally understand that fed up feeling of having made porridge to then see it go to waste. (She also prefers porridge to any other breakfast so i am stuck!!!).

Eggs made in the microwave whilst making toast takes no time at all.

Or I boil some eggs on a Sunday night for breakfast on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.
I might even cook more sausages than I need for a tea time and have spares for breakfast sausage sandwiches...!

However I did have a health visitor tell me that most cereals were too high in sugar and salt in the portion sizes our kids want to actually eat (start weighing out cereal and you will see she is correct - the portion size nutrition info on the back is about 25% of the portion my 6yo would eat at breakfast!).
She also told me store bought bread is also really high in sugar and salt.... which it is!!! In fact at one point we had a bread maker which enabled us to reduce that but now we rely on a local baker rather than store bought.

However. The important thing is to have an overall balanced diet. Breakfast is only a part of the picture.

And yes. I hope he Friend is a really good one or that convo is a bit of an odd one!!!

My nursery (rated outstanding) gives my 18 month old rice krispjes, shreddies and weetabix!

cherrryontop · 29/05/2019 19:53

They're not exactly full of nutrition but they're not cocaine.

It's a pretty plain inoffensive cereal, it's absolutely fine.

There are definitely worse ones like Frosties or ricicles, the ones pretty much dipped in chocolate or sugar.

People need to get a grip.

Di11y · 29/05/2019 19:57

anything under 5g is fine with me. it's 2.4g probably same as breastmilk!

GenevaMaybe · 29/05/2019 19:57

I have a 17 month old. She has weetabix some days, Cheerios others, sometimes a scrambled egg and always a bit of fruit. I think it’s nice to offer a range of things. We live in Switzerland but if Rice Krispies were available here I would add them to the list

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 29/05/2019 19:59

Awww. Ricicles were discontinued in 2018 "due to sugar fears".

I'm still gonna try that Frosties-Cocopops combo though.

There's not much sugar in rice krispies. compared with many other cereals.

PumpkinPie2016 · 29/05/2019 21:06

Rice crispies are fine - honestly, some people are so weird about food Hmm

My son has rice crispies some days or weetabix/cornflakes. In addition he will usually have toast and an apple/banana Shock He's totally fine - perfect weight for his height and a very healthy boy.

I also don't get why people think it's essential to vary breakfast? If rice crispies is all a kid will eat then surely that's better than them having nothing?

icecreamsundae32 · 29/05/2019 21:27

Nothing wrong with Rice Krispies as long as it's not all they eat 3 meals a day lol!

My 18 month old is a nightmare for eating breakfast! She used to have porridge but went off that months ago and won't entertain it now...I've tried toast with marmite, jam, marmalade, PB and honey, crumpet, scotch pancake, Rice Krispies, Cheerios, weetabix, shreddies, omelette etc she just has a bite and chucks it!! I stopped giving her milk first and even that made no difference! She will sometimes have half a yoghurt & half a banana if I'm lucky!

morallybankruptme · 30/05/2019 15:19

I buy ds weetabix. For some reason he loves them. I Think they are 🤮. Like soggy cardboard and they literally make me gag when soggy.
